The Archduke's Songbird-Chapter 308: Working Together
Instead of the fury Bernard had anticipated, Isadora let out a deep breath, her expression softening as she looked at him. The tension that had gripped his chest for days loosened slightly, but the guilt still gnawed at him.
He had returned to her broken and ashamed, expecting her to lash out, to rightfully condemn him for his failures. But what met him was not the anger of a betrayed wife, but the tender compassion of the woman who had always seen through to the heart of him.
"You did well by returning to me, my love," she whispered, her voice tinged with a tenderness that Bernard hadn’t expected. The sound of it soothed his frayed nerves, each word like a balm over the wounds he carried deep inside.
Slowly, cautiously, Isadora leaned in, pressing her lips to his in a kiss that was gentle yet full of the unspoken forgiveness she was offering. It was a kiss that promised they would face whatever came next together, no matter the cost.
Bernard pulled back slightly, his eyes wide with surprise. "What?" he asked, disbelief coloring his tone. His mind was reeling—he had steeled himself for her anger, for the scorn and hurt he knew he deserved. He had prepared himself for the worst, for accusations and arguments that would tear them apart. But here she was, accepting him, forgiving him, even after everything that had happened.
Isadora’s smile was sad, but there was a strength in it that Bernard hadn’t seen before. "I know you did what you had to do, Bernard," she said softly, her fingers brushing his cheek with a touch that was both comforting and firm. "I know how much it must have pained you to leave her behind. But you’re here now, with me. That’s what matters. We can’t change what’s happened, but we can face what comes next together. And whatever it is, we’ll get through it."
Her words, laced with understanding and love, hit Bernard like a tidal wave, and tears welled up in his eyes. He pulled Isadora into his arms once more, holding her as tightly as he dared.
He had feared losing her, feared that his actions would drive a wedge between them that could never be repaired. But instead, she had shown him a depth of understanding and compassion that he hadn’t thought possible.
In that moment, Bernard realized just how lucky he was to have her by his side, and he vowed to never take her love for granted again.
After a while, Isadora gently pushed him away, her hands resting on his chest as she looked up at him. "You should wash up," she suggested softly, her voice gentle yet commanding. Bernard nodded, expecting her to follow him to the bath, to help him scrub away the grime and guilt that clung to him like a second skin. But she didn’t. Instead, she watched him with a distant look in her eyes, as if something weighed heavily on her mind.
Bernard’s heart sank slightly as he washed himself, the warmth of the water doing little to ease the chill in his bones. He had hoped for her touch, for the comfort of her presence beside him, but he understood that she needed space too. She had endured so much in his absence, and he couldn’t blame her for the distance that now seemed to stretch between them.
When he finished and entered their room, Bernard was stunned to see all the windows and doors locked and secured. Isadora stood by the bed, her posture rigid, her eyes focused on something he couldn’t quite see.
His heart leaped, thinking that perhaps she was waiting for him, that they might finally share a moment of intimacy after their long separation. But before he could act on his impulse, Isadora bent down and pulled a bag out from under the bed.
"You should give this to Jostein," she whispered, her voice tight with urgency. "Now."
"Jostein?" Bernard furrowed his brows, confusion swirling in his mind. He had expected one thing, but another entirely was happening. The weight of the bag, the urgency in her voice—none of it made sense to him.
"Milady’s horse," Isadora explained quickly. "Milady left him in our stable secretly. You see this vial? If I add some jasmine essence, Jostein will be able to track Milady."
Bernard blinked, the reality of the situation slowly dawning on him. "What?"
Isadora’s hands were steady as she uncorked the vial and added a few drops of jasmine essence. The liquid inside glowed faintly, and in the distance, they heard Jostein neigh loudly.
"Milady probably knew this would happen," Isadora said, her voice now trembling slightly with the weight of her thoughts. "I don’t know for sure. She sent you here for a reason. Roche needs someone to watch over it. The Altanians are here, Bernard..."
Bernard nodded, his mind racing as he tried to piece everything together. "Yes, let’s go," he said, following Isadora out to the stable.
When they reached Jostein, the horse was already restless, as if sensing the urgency of the task ahead. Bernard quickly saddled him and tied the bag to the saddle.
Just as he was about to mount, he heard the caw of a raven and looked up to see Jaylene, the mynah, perched comfortably on Jostein’s back. The bird’s presence was both surprising and reassuring, as if it was a sign that they were not alone in this endeavor.
Bernard and Isadora watched as Jostein galloped away, Jaylene perched securely on his back. Both felt a mixture of astonishment and relief, knowing that these smart animals could handle the task they had been given.
"What’s in the bag?" Bernard asked, his voice tinged with curiosity and concern.
"Milady’s belongings. Her bow and warm clothes..." Isadora’s eyes filled with worry, her mind clearly on Jessamyn. "I hope she is holding on well..."
Bernard wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. "She will be fine," he murmured, trying to reassure her, though he wasn’t sure if he was convincing himself as well.
After making sure Isadora was safe and comfortable, Bernard went out to scout the area. Isadora had mentioned rumors of Altanian scouts, and Bernard knew they couldn’t afford to ignore the threat.
As he crept through the forest, his senses on high alert, he confirmed that the rumors were true. Altanian scouts were indeed in the area, their presence a dark cloud hanging over Ayberia.
Bernard checked the secret missives from other areas of Ayberia, reading through the reports from other lords. Many were concerned about the increasing presence of Altanian scouts, and some even blamed the Archduke for abandoning the nation in its time of need.
Bernard knew it was imperative to keep Jessamyn’s disappearance from Theodulf Castle a secret. If word got out, it could spark accusations of treason against the Archduke’s family, leading to riots and chaos they couldn’t afford.
When Bernard finally returned to the cottage, darkness had fallen, and the air was bitterly cold. He found Isadora standing outside, her figure pale against the snow-covered ground.
"Isadora!" He ran to her.
