Chapter 310: Looming Danger

Jessamyn clutched her belly, the faint stirrings of life within her igniting a fierce protectiveness. Her mind was a storm of fear and determination; she could not afford to be caught—not now, when her child’s life hung in the balance. The murmurs of the Altanian soldiers grew louder, their voices a menacing chorus that seemed to close in around her like a tightening noose. She strained to hear Hamilton’s voice amidst the tumult. If she was in danger, wouldn’t he make some attempt to protect her?

But there was only the oppressive noise of the soldiers and the gnawing silence where his voice should have been.

Jessamyn’s heart raced with dark thoughts. Was Hamilton hurt because he had tried to shield her? Had they punished him for treason? The uncertainty consumed her, each second dragging out into an agonizing eternity as she awaited her fate.

Then, amidst the cacophony, a loud and familiar voice rang out, slicing through the chaos. "I am here!"

Her heart leapt. Jessamyn’s breath caught in her throat as she listened intently. The voice continued with an authoritative edge that cut through her fear.

"I am the mother of the Grand Duke. I can grant you access to the Palace," the voice declared, steady and commanding.

A chill raced down Jessamyn’s spine. Jerrick’s mother had found her way to the battalion of Altanian soldiers. Relief mingled with dread. How had she tracked Jessamyn? Did she know that Jessamyn was hiding here? Jessamyn hugged herself tightly, her mind reeling from the implications.

The soldiers around her began to discuss amongst themselves, their voices a turbulent murmur of speculation. Jessamyn caught occasional snippets of conversation that revealed Hamilton’s location. He was standing by the cart, speaking quietly with another soldier. She strained to listen, desperate for any clue.

It appeared that Jerrick’s mother had been captured after following the soldiers. When she was apprehended, she claimed to be a noblewoman from Ayberia who could facilitate their entry into Elodia in exchange for her life. Jessamyn surmised that the woman’s magical powers must have waned if she had avoided fighting the soldiers. Or was this her strategy all along? Was she planning to lead the soldiers into the palace and wreak havoc?

The prophecy flashed vividly in Jessamyn’s mind: Jerrick’s mother leading the Altanian soldiers into the palace, followed by an onslaught of destruction. The thought made her stomach churn. Elodia was only a day’s journey away. By the next morning, they could be upon it. If the palace fell, the noblewomen inside—Cordelia among them—would be in grave danger.

Hamilton had mentioned the constant patrols of Ayberian soldiers around Elodia’s walls. They needed Jerrick’s mother’s assistance to breach the defenses. Jessamyn knew she couldn’t remain hidden in the cart any longer. She had to find a way to escape and alert the crown prince to the looming danger.

When Hamilton offered her the midday meal, Jessamyn took it but barely noticed the food. Her mind was already racing. "It’s time for me to leave, Hamilton," she said, her voice steady despite the tension threading through her words.

Hamilton’s face went ashen. The midday sun was harsh and exposed, making it almost impossible to slip away from the camp unnoticed. Seeing her resolve, he promised to find a way to help her. Jessamyn’s gratitude was profound. He didn’t have to go to such lengths for her, and yet he did. She wished she could do more to repay his kindness.

Hamilton managed to maneuver the cart to the edge of the camp, where the forest grew dense and offered a potential escape route. He helped Jessamyn down and provided her with some food and water for the journey. Jessamyn grasped his hand tightly, her eyes filled with earnest pleading.

"Thank you for everything, Hamilton. You did more than you could. I am eternally grateful for you and your timely help," Jessamyn said.

Hamilton’s eyes watered seeing the genuine gratefulness on Jessamyn’s face. "I am only returning the favor I owed."

Jessamyn shook her head. "We both know you did more than that," she smiled. But then her expression turned serious.

"Once you reach the palace, please do not partake in harming the women and children," she implored, her voice trembling with desperation.

Hamilton’s expression grew even more troubled. "That is not our order, Your Grace. We are not meant to—"

Jessamyn tightened her grip on his hand. "Do not follow your fellow soldiers blindly. In the chaos of war, orders can be twisted, and loyalties can shift. Let your conscience guide you."

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small trinket. "Give me paper and ink," she requested urgently.

Hamilton handed over the materials, though his confusion was evident. Jessamyn scribbled a message quickly but carefully, her movements swift but precise. Underneath the trinket, she pressed a small seal of the Archduke into the ink and signed her name.

Hamilton, who had a basic understanding of the Ayberian language, read the note. His eyes widened as he took in the message:

"Offer him sanctuary if you find him. He helped me greatly. Signed, The Archduchess of Ayberia."

"If you are captured by an Ayberian soldier, give them this. It will ensure your safety," Jessamyn instructed, her voice urgent.

That was the least she could do for him. She had already promised him that she wouldn’t out them to the Ayberian soldiers. But she was going to protect her people. She hoped he could escape.

As she spoke, she noticed Jerrick’s mother glancing in their direction. Jessamyn’s heart pounded in her chest. Had she been seen?

In a surge of panic, Jessamyn tried to hide, but the woman began to move toward them with alarming speed.

Jessamyn’s pulse quickened, her fear mounting. She needed to act quickly, but with the woman’s approach, it was clear that her chance to escape was slipping away. Every moment was critical as she fought to keep her composure and find a way out of the looming danger.
