Chapter 516: Chapter 516 A Happy Day (Grand Finale)

As time drew closer to November 25th, the atmosphere of Thanksgiving grew denser, and Autumn advanced into its latter stage, with trees everywhere shedding their golden-yellow leaves, adding a touch of desolation to this joyful festival.

On Thanksgiving Day, the sky was clear and cerulean, another day of fine weather. Jessica rose early, having prepared the grand Thanksgiving feast well in advance—buying a large, plump turkey, ensuring that everyone would eat their fill! It was, after all, their ninth love anniversary! It was also Keke’s first Thanksgiving, something she had been looking forward to for a long time.

“Yang, Yang—where have you gone?” A crisp calling sounded in the living room, followed by a child’s tender voice, “Yang, Yang—where have you gone?” “Don’t just call Daddy by his name,” Jessica corrected gently, and Keke responded with an “Oh.” Sweetheart was at that stage of development where she loved imitating adult behavior and speech.

Glancing at the wall clock, Jessica furrowed her brows slightly, their plans having been altered: this year everyone had their own way of celebrating Thanksgiving because Joshua had just gotten engaged and was traveling to Europe with Ali, dragging along his parents too; Mr. and Mrs. Wang didn’t place much importance on Thanksgiving, they had events in San Francisco to attend. However, there were plenty of holidays to look forward to, with Keke’s second birthday approaching. Having a quiet, peaceful celebration at home was quite nice, too.

“Mommy’s going to be busy,” Jessica said, bending down to kiss Keke on the forehead and smiling, “You play by yourself, okay? Call Mommy if you need anything.” Keke nodded obediently, her little cheeks also smiling.

Keke settled down amidst her toys, holding her little white bear, puppy, kitty, and other dolls, switching them around while muttering something to herself: “Time to eat!” “You mustn’t refuse to eat.” “Eat more, grow big!” “Oh my, eek! Where are you going?”…

...

“Found it, found it!” After a while, Wang Yang’s hearty laughter echoed into the living room, soon he appeared holding a black videotape, and Keke cheered as she got up and ran to him: “What’s this?” Wang Yang fondly stroked her head and walked towards the television and video player, saying, “You’ll know in a minute!” This was one of the treasures from a box of miscellaneous stuff moved over from their old home in San Francisco, actually recordings from his childhood.

Soon, the television screen showed the footage from the tape, with an autumnal forest path on display, a black-haired teenage boy walked toward the camera, and approaching it, he grinned, “Are you watching? Idiot!”

“Haha, idiot!” Wang Yang, sitting on the couch, slapped his thigh laughing uncontrollably, while Keke too giggled beside him. Curiously, she asked, “Daddy, who’s that? Is that you?” Wang Yang nodded, “Yes, it is. Pretty cool, huh?” Keke looked confused, “Why the long hair?” Wang Yang shrugged, chuckling, “Back then Daddy had long hair. I was in a band for a while… you know, singing. But then I reformed my ways, and now I’m a director.”

Sometime unnoticed, Jessica walked over from the kitchen, perching on his shoulder from behind the couch, tilting her heels and swinging them, watching the image of him practicing boxing on the screen, her voice teasingly laughed, “Hey kid, looking sharp! Wanna go out on a date?” Just as Wang Yang was about to reply, Keke suddenly imitated the young dad’s earlier shout, “Action!” Having visited countless movie sets, she knew the term well. However, Wang Yang and Jessica felt a bit startled by the unexpected mimic. He asked with a smile, “Sweetheart, do you know what that means? Action?”

“Hmm…” Keke, who loved to think, racked his little brain and then said with naïve laughter, “Movies!” Jessica pushed his head with a big laugh, and Wang Yang tenderly stroked his daughter’s head, grinning, “You can think of it that way.”

As the sun gradually set, the remaining rays of the sunset made the fallen leaves on the ground seem even more desolate. From morning till nightfall, the Wang Yang family was always full of joy and laughter, except for Danny, whose nap time had increased.

“It’s so big!!” The table was enveloped in wafts of delicious smells, and upon seeing the large spread of appetizing dishes and the shiny, oily turkey in front of him, Keke exclaimed in amazement. Wang Yang, sitting at the head of the table, pretended to be grave, “This is our tradition, the Thanksgiving turkey must be big.” Jessica, sitting on his left, shrugged her shoulders, “…Yes, it is.” Keke, the curious baby, immediately asked, “Why?” With a cough, Wang Yang, gesturing grandly toward Jessica, declared solemnly, “Because your mom has a really big appetite, she always eats a lot. Don’t you remember? She ate half of it last year.”

Keke burst into laughter, her big eyes crescent-shaped, “Mom, you’re such a glutton!” Jessica opened her mouth in surprise, rolled her eyes, and smacked his hand hard, “Not true.” Wang Yang raised his hands, the knife pointing straight at the ceiling, laughing, “Alright, alright! Actually, it’s me. Dad always eats a lot! It’s gotten to the point where our guests are afraid their turkeys won’t be big enough.” Jessica gave a thumbs up, nodding her head, trying to hold back laughter as her face remained sweet.

The Thanksgiving feast ended amidst laughter and chatter. Night had fallen, and the chill of late autumn blew through the breeze. The leaves from the Chinese parasol trees in the garden flitted down, and the lawn was now covered in layers. Tonight happened to be the night of the full moon, a round moon hung high in the night sky, and the bright moonlight bathed the earth.

“Ah-haha!” Keke ran happily across the lawn, while Wang Yang and Jessica sat nearby on a wicker chair, enjoying the full moon and sharing sweet nothings. He gently stroked her belly, where new life was taking shape.

Looking after Sweetheart for a while, Danny, who was lying near the wicker chair, closed his eyes wearily. He was already very old, and it was uncertain how much longer he would be able to accompany them, so he really enjoyed moments like this. The wind tonight was indeed quite refreshing.

“The scenery tonight is so beautiful,” Wang Yang leaned back in the chair, looking up at the star-filled sky with a reflective smile. Jessica glanced at him, then at the drifting autumn leaves and bright moon, leaned back in her chair as well, and exhaled a long breath, “Yes, so still and beautiful.” She then said suddenly, “Nine years.” Wang Yang turned his head to look at her, stretching out his hand, “Hey, how about another nine years?” Jessica turned her head toward him, patted his hand and held it firmly, her lips curving into a smile, “It’s a deal! Let’s see where it takes us.”

“A butterfly!” Just then, Keke suddenly shouted with excitement, pointing to the sky. Both parents looked up and saw a common moth flapping its wings in the moonlight and lamplight. Wang Yang laughed, “That’s not a butterfly, it’s a moth!” Keke seemed puzzled, “A moth?” Jessica responded with a laugh, “Yes, a moth.” Wang Yang also laughed, “Yes, maybe it’s not as beautiful as a butterfly, and maybe it flies through the dark night, but it has the courage to chase the light, and that’s wonderful!”

Keke stared thoughtfully at the moth which circled a few times before continuing to flutter its wings towards the bright and clear full moon. (To be continued. If you like this work, you’re welcome to vote for it on qidian.com. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
