The Bigshot Married Himself to the Heiress-Chapter 639 - 680: Can’t Raise, Dare not Raise, Don’t Want to Raise
"What’s wrong?"
Adrian Desmond glanced over at the group of women. The women, who were originally chattering away, fell silent under his intimidating gaze. The assembled women dispersed, each going off to busy themselves with their own affairs.
"Nothing much. They just believe that I should find a few concubines for you. Dan Taylor has married eighteen concubines. Considering your status as the Sixth Master, surely you should marry at least twenty-eight concubines? Maybe, in the eyes of your friends, twenty-eight concubines might seem too few. Perhaps they’d consider thirty-eight to be more suitable..." Sienna Johnson said with scathing sarcasm.
With the number thirty-eight, Sienna was cleverly using the extensive and profound Orientan language to insult someone.
Adrian Desmond shivered inwardly. The topic of marrying additional women was a taboo for Sienna. If he dared even entertain the thought, Sienna would undoubtedly tear him apart in an instant.
"Why would I marry so many? It’s a waste of money. You have no idea. Last week for Deanne’s birthday, Dan Taylor gifted her a yacht. As a result, his other seventeen wives also insisted on having one, so poor Dan had to borrow money from me."
"Why would I be foolish enough to support so many women? Any daughters they might bear wouldn’t be as beautiful as one you’d give me."
Sienna Johnson nodded. "Exactly. Maintaining so many women is a waste. Whatever those eighteen wives could do, I alone could do perfectly well."
Ward Penney, who happened to be passing by, burst out laughing at her comment.
"When did the Sixth Master become so poor that he cannot afford to maintain eighteen wives? With your wealth, you could even afford to support about fifteen wives."
Adrian Desmond glared furiously at Ward Penney. Was he really unable to afford it? The reality was that he didn’t want to, didn’t dare to, and didn’t wish to.
Of course, he couldn’t possibly say this explicitly. Instead, Adrian adopted a serious tone and said, "Given the current global economic downturn, and with business not being as lucrative as before, I have to be more frugal. Besides, my wife is about to give birth to our son. Our son will eventually get married. He’ll need a good wife, and then they’ll have their own sons—all of these things require money."
Ward Penney looked at Adrian Desmond with a baffled expression. Everyone knew that Adrian Desmond was the richest among them. Given the recent state of global unrest, Adrian’s thriving arms-dealing business was making people green with envy.
Sienna Johnson knew that Adrian Desmond was joking and played along. "Indeed, our family is so poor."
Trevor Harrington, who was sipping grape wine nearby, almost spat it out upon hearing this. This family, crying poor? How were the rest of them supposed to live?
Adrian Desmond flashed a smile at Sienna, handing her a honey-glazed grilled chicken wing. "Take your time, Sienna. It’s hot."
"Um."
The chicken wing was golden and tasted great. As she watched Adrian grill more chicken wings, Sienna felt a warmth spreading in her heart. Sensing her intense gaze, Adrian turned to see her fixedly watching him.
"What is it?"
"I was thinking, if a woman does not feel jealous when her man is involved with other women, does she really love him? For instance, this chicken wing is so delicious. If you were to grill it for another woman, I’d probably feel jealous."
Adrian joined in, "Then you must love me profoundly."
No woman in the world had a stronger streak of jealousy than her.
"Of course! So be warned, if you dare marry a concubine, you’re a dead man!" Sienna growled, chewing ferociously on her chicken wing and shooting him a fierce glare.
Adrian exuded a strong presence, effectively keeping the other women at bay. The only ones close by were the unmarried Ward Penney, the engaged Trevor Harrington, and Dan Taylor, who had married eighteen wives.
"What do you mean? Are you suggesting that my wives don’t love me?" Dan Taylor spoke up in disagreement.
Sienna looked at Dan and asked, "If your wives also had other men, would you be jealous? Would you be angry?"
"How could that possibly be? Aside from me, how could they have other men?"
"Why not?"
"I provide for them, ensuring they live in opulence. In return, they tend to my needs."
"Then, suppose there was a woman who was willing to provide for you and lavish you with a luxurious life. Would you be willing to be one of her many husbands?"
Sienna’s statements were practically blasphemous. Dan Taylor didn’t approve and could do nothing about Sienna’s sharp tongue, so he directed his frustration at Adrian instead.
"Adrian, control your wife. She’s become too audacious because you keep spoiling her!"
"She’s my woman. I’ll spoil her if I want to!"
Adrian immediately radiated an aura of menace, his intimidating presence like sharp swords aimed at Dan Taylor. He retorted defiantly, "Do you have a problem with that?"
Everyone looked at Adrian in exasperation, shaking their heads.
They all thought to themselves: Adrian is truly losing face for the men of Abyanabad! He’s completely under a woman’s control. Is this really okay?
After Sienna had her fill of grilled chicken wings, grilled squid, and grilled corn, she remembered what the doctor had said about not overeating, afraid that the baby might grow too large, making childbirth difficult. Only then did she stop eating.
"Why aren’t you eating anymore?" Adrian asked, noticing that she still seemed to want to continue.
Sienna patted her belly. "Your son absorbs nutrients too well. I’m really afraid he’ll grow too large and I’ll end up with a difficult labor."
Adrian’s eyebrows knitted together in displeasure. "What nonsense are you talking about difficult labor? Stop spouting such rubbish!"
"My mistake," Sienna quickly reassured. "I’ll make sure to give birth to your son smoothly."
Adrian’s face finally broke into a smile at that.
During the gathering, a bold woman invited Sienna Johnson to join them. Sienna was keen to avoid Dan Taylor’s gloomy, resentful face, so she went along.
After all, Adrian was from Abyanabad, and it wouldn’t do for Sienna not to know anyone from there; she still needed to establish her social circles.
Many women were extremely curious about her, gathering around, their gazes scrutinizing her relentlessly. Sienna stood there calmly, letting them examine her.
"Do you know any sorcery?" The woman who spoke was Eve, Trevor Harrington’s fiancee.
Eve was a young and adorable woman who wore a pink veil. A devout Muslim, she had even made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
"I don’t know any sorcery. I’m just an ordinary person."
Sienna was both amused and perplexed; she couldn’t figure out why these women would ask such a bizarre question. Did she look like a vixen to them?
"Did you cast a spell on the Sixth Master?" Eve asked.
"Exactly! Otherwise, why would the Sixth Master treat you so well?" Lisa chimed in, convinced that Sienna must have used some kind of spell on him.
"What kind of spell?"
"The kind from Cagalanga, a curse."
"Oh, I’ve seen those in zombie movies. But aren’t curses like that just myths?"
Although Sienna was afraid of watching horror movies, as a good student brought up with Mark’s materialistic teachings, she was an atheist. She didn’t believe that ghosts actually existed in this world; it was merely people scaring themselves.
