The Billionaire's Rental Wife Is A Hot Shot-Chapter 48: Seal It With A Kiss
Chapter 48: Seal It With A Kiss
The next few days passed in a blur, with everyone absorbed in their own plans and schemes. Damien was particularly pleased, having received enough samples to send to his research lab in Qubarc for testing. They were also investigating William’s sudden heart attack, suspecting the root cause might be traced back over a year.
Evelyn took a sip from her third cup of coffee as she worked on her designs. Life had returned to normal—William was back in good health and had returned to the office, and her bond with her new, loving family grew stronger each day.
Kiana had insisted that Evelyn sleep in Zevian’s room, the three of them ending their stressful days together, sharing stories and laughter until they drifted off to sleep. The warmth of those moments filled her heart with a joy she knew she’d cherish forever.
"Shall I bring you another cup, Ma’am?" Agatha’s voice broke through Evelyn’s focus as she sketched designs for Igor’s projects. With her health fully restored, Evelyn had thrown herself into her work, determined to make the upcoming first anniversary of their company a success.
"No, Agatha. I’m done for today," Evelyn replied with a smile. Agatha nodded and left her alone in the dining hall.
Evelyn completed her final sketch, sending a copy back to the company before placing down her stylus. She stretched her arms, feeling the tension in her back. "Ahh, I need to lie down," she murmured, rubbing her stiff neck.
Seeing that no one was around, she slowly stood up. The cut on her ankle had healed enough for her to walk without support, but since Zevian didn’t seem to mind carrying her everywhere, she had decided to enjoy the attention for as long as it lasted.
A soft smile tugged at her lips as she recalled how Zevian had carried her around the house, never letting her feet touch the ground whenever he was near. The memory made her heart flutter, and with a grin, she headed for the stairs, her steps light and pain-free.
But just as she climbed a few steps, she heard the very voice that had been on her mind all day.
"I don’t pay you to make excuses. Clean up the mess before sunset!"
Evelyn turned, spotting Zevian striding into the house, his phone pressed to his ear. He had removed his blazer, and the first three buttons of his shirt were undone, giving him that casually handsome look that always made her pulse quicken.
Their eyes met, and Zevian’s gaze dropped to the stairs where she stood. He ended the call and quickly approached her, his expression softening into one of mild amusement.
Panicking as her charade was at risk of being exposed, Evelyn grabbed her ankle and winced dramatically. "Ouch, it hurts," she said, trying to sound convincing. When Zevian raised an eyebrow, she added with a nervous laugh, "I thought it was better and tried walking on my own. Silly me, haha!"
Zevian’s lips curved into a small smile, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "You know it’s your right leg that’s injured, right?"
Evelyn’s heart skipped a beat as she glanced down, realizing her mistake. She had grabbed the wrong ankle! Flustered, she quickly switched her hand to the correct leg, her cheeks burning with embarrassment. "Hahaha, looks like I’m fully recovered! I can’t even remember which leg was hurt!" she blurted out, her voice rising in pitch.
Without waiting for a response, Evelyn turned and hurried up the stairs, desperate to escape the situation and bury herself in her room. But just as she reached the next step, a strong arm wrapped around her waist.
In one swift motion, Zevian lifted her off her feet, tossing her lightly into the air before catching her securely in his arms. Evelyn yelped, her heart racing as she found herself cradled against his chest.
"You don’t have to pretend to be injured just to be in my arms, darling," Zevian teased, his voice a low murmur that sent a shiver down her spine. "Just say the word, and I’ll always be at your service."
Evelyn’s cheeks flushed a deeper shade of red as she tried to hide her face in his chest, feeling both embarrassed and utterly giddy. Zevian’s teasing words and tender touch sent butterflies fluttering in her stomach, making the moment both sensual and sweet.
"Your room or mine?" Zevian asked, bringing her back from her thoughts.
Evelyn’s eyes widened, her cheeks burning even more as he looked at her with a smirk. "My room, of course." She grumbled, causing Zevian to break into a chuckle.
"As you wish, milady," He replied, the smile never leaving his face. Evelyn huffed, feeling like his teasing had reached a new level. First, he used to play with touches, but now he had combined words too, hitting her heart with every chance he got.
"Why are you back?" Evelyn asked, looking up at him. Having conversations while he carried her around had become their new routine.
"Forgot a document," Zevian replied, walking toward her room.
"You could have sent Brandon to pick it up."
"Well, I didn’t want to miss the chance to see my sick wife," Zevian flirted, his words earning a scowl from Evelyn. Entering the room, he placed her gently on the bed and continued, "She’s still recovering, so I decided to come home and make sure she was alright."
Evelyn gritted her teeth, her eyes shooting daggers at her brutally honest husband. Zevian squatted in front of her, checking if she had changed the dressing around her ankle. It seemed like she did, adding extra bandaging just to keep up the act, which made him chuckle.
"Laugh again, and I’ll seal those lips permanently!" Evelyn glowered, her puffed-up, angry face too cute for him to resist admiring.
"Well, I wouldn’t mind if you sealed them with a kiss," Zevian teased back, his words making her already flushed cheeks burn even hotter. But before Evelyn could continue their banter, her phone suddenly rang, and a frown appeared on her lips.
"Who is it?" Zevian asked, noticing her expression change to surprise. Evelyn showed him the caller ID, and Zevian’s brows furrowed. Why was her father suddenly calling her?
"Pick it up," Zevian urged, and Evelyn hesitantly answered, putting it on speaker.
"I heard you were attacked," William’s voice was devoid of emotion on the other end. Evelyn hummed in response, feeling a pause before he added, "Let’s have dinner together tonight."
Evelyn was at a loss for words, and Zevian, who also heard him, frowned, unable to decipher the motive behind William’s sudden invitation.
"Okay," Evelyn replied, her heart fluttering with a mix of excitement and anxiety. It had been almost a year since her father last called her—the last time was on her birthday before the scandal occurred when he had wished her on a business trip and asked her to check out the new car he had gifted.
"Should I be worried?" she mumbled, looking at Zevian, who was still kneeling in front of her.
Zevian shook his head and gently held her hand, trying to console her. "Maybe he just wants to spend some time with you." Evelyn nodded, hoping it was for the same reason.
On the other side, William placed down his phone, his expression unreadable. Sophia was quick to hand him the small bottle of pills the doctor had prescribed to manage his stress.
"Do you think she’ll fall for it?" he asked, swallowing the pill with a sip of water. Evelyn was his last hope to save the company, and Sophia had suggested a plan that could work wonders in their favor.
"She will if you’re nice to her," Sophia replied calmly, aware of Evelyn’s deep-seated longing for her father’s affection. William exhaled in frustration, the resentment she had cultivated within him toward Evelyn over the past few months bubbling beneath the surface.
With a smile, Sophia gently patted his back and added, "Don’t worry, we won’t fail this time. I will go and take care of all the necessary arrangements."
