At sunset, a black Maybach rolled to a smooth stop at the edge of Hoi An’s Ancient Town. "Where are we?" Harlow asked her hubby as she stared around.
It was only a few moments ago that they were all in the city, she had seen skyscrapers and high buildings, and now, they were here.
"Come Villian, you’ll love it I promise." Alanis smiled as he stepped out of the car and as Harlow stepped out, she was immediately swallowed by a world of golden light. Her breath caught in her throat as she stared at the beautiful place.
There were no street lamps, no glaring neon signs, just the soft, flickering glow of thousands of lanterns floating through the night.
The air carried a gentle breeze, infused with the mingling aromas of sizzling street food, incense from the temples, and the faint sweetness of lotus flowers.
Alanis took her hands, a smile on his lips. "Beautiful, isn’t it?"
"The Hoi An Lantern Festival?" She murmured and turned to him, the golden light casting shadows across his face. "It’s enchanting," she admitted, her voice almost a whisper. She had never seen anything like this before. frёeωebɳovel.com
Though she’d heard of it and even seen a few videos of it online, being here was a different feeling. It is no wonder Alanis brought her here. He brought her to a place where she could fulfill all of her fantasies at once.
"Come on," Alanis said, offering his hand. "Let’s experience it properly."
They wandered through the festival, "Let’s try that." Harlow pointed at a stall where a few people gathered as they ate skewered meats glistening with rich sauce. Though Harlow had eaten a few before from some restaurant, she wanted to try it from here.
"Alright." She dragged Alanis over to the stall her bright green eyes staring at the meat as her mouth watered. She would have tried the moon cake, but she was allergic to beans, but that doesn’t mean she would let Alanis try it.
"Can I have a bite?" She asked the woman who sold to the others and she smiled.
"You can try the samples pretty." Harlow took a bite of the meat and rolled her eyes back into her head.
"I want this and the moon cakes please." The woman nodded as she packaged everything for them.
Harlow took Alanis to the next stall where they bought Nước Mía (Fresh Suger cane juice). Harlow took her hubby to a free bench just hanging on the road. She opened the moon cake bag and skewered meat.
Harlow bit one meat again from the stick, "Hmm." She hummed. Every bite was a burst of flavor. She opened her eyes to look at the man who just stared at her with a smile on his lips.
Alanis was new to this side of her. He wondered if this was her true side or just another happy side of her. He smiled as he watched her, for some reason, he didn’t want to ruin things for them.
"You’re not eating?" He watched her pick the moon cake, breaking it in half as she brought it to his lips.
"You’ve not had anything to eat since this afternoon Alanis. Eat up before you die." Harlow said bringing the snack further to his lips and Alanis didn’t hesitate to eat the snack from her hands.
"It’s good."
"Of course, too bad I cannot eat it." Harlow smiled. She knew of moon cake from her stepmother. There was a restaurant her father had taken them to that day, but for some reason, Elisa ordered the moon cake, claiming it was her favorite in the world.
Harlow ate the moon cake without realizing there was red bean on the inside. Her allergies spiked and she was blamed for ruining their dinner.
Coming back to reality again, she placed the remaining half next to Alanis’s lips and he took a bite again.
"Wow, you two are so cute." A woman complimented and Harlow blushed.
"Here, eat the meat too." She placed one of the sticks in his hands, and Alanis took a bite of it. It was divine. So tasty, so flavorful.
"You should eat too Villain," Alanis said and she picked a meat stick and took a bite. The source dropped from the sides of her lips and before she could clean it, Alanis used his thumb to wipe the beef stain.
"Be careful." He said dipping his thumb right into his mouth as he licked the sauce from his hands. Harlow blushed at his action, she peeked around to see if people saw that, and of course they did.
Who was she kidding, they were in an open place. A public sector at that.
"You didn’t have to do that," Harlow said.
After eating, Alanis and Harlow were back to exploring the place again.
The town was alive with laughter and music, yet despite the crowd, it felt like they were in their own world. Alanis held his wife’s hand like she would go missing if he let her out of his sight for a moment.
"Alanis, it’s a temple. Let’s go there and pray." Harlow dragged him to the direction of the temple. Alanis had no option but to follow her there.
Stopping by a temple, they lit incense sticks and bowed their heads in prayer.
Harlow had nothing to pray for, except taking revenge on the people that had wronged her before.
And Alanis, he prayed God showed him mercy and not take his wife away from him for the second time. He had experienced what losing her felt like and didn’t want it again.
The air was thick with the scent of sandalwood, and as they stepped out of the building, they noticed a few people gathered at a corner.
Both people smiled as they watched street performances, graceful dancers in flowing silk danced and entertained the people around. Fire breathers exhaling plumes of gold displayed their skills to earn a few coins from visitors and natives.
