The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 134: Take Care of Yourself
Master Nathan and Zachary Preston were chatting outside when they caught the aroma of the cooking food. Curious, he remarked, "What’s Vera making? It smells amazing."
"Vera has always been a great cook," Zachary Preston said with a smile. "You’ll find out when we eat."
Master Nathan immediately began looking forward to dinner, though, being his usually reserved self, he didn’t show it too obviously.
The food was ready quickly. There were six dishes in total: beer-braised duck, spicy diced rabbit, stir-fried shredded potatoes with vinegar, braised eggplant, garlic stir-fried greens, and a small plate of stir-fried pork.
The six dishes were a true feast for the senses, with each one looking utterly appetizing.
Master Nathan took a bite of the beer-braised duck, and his eyes lit up. He asked Vera, "How did you make this duck? There’s no gamy taste at all, and it’s incredibly tender and delicious. It’s not greasy in the slightest. This is the best I’ve ever had!"
Vera smiled and said, "You’re too kind, Mr. Nathan. It’s just beer-braised duck. Many restaurants serve it, and it’s quite simple to make. After you stir-fry the duck until the moisture is gone, you just add two star anises, a piece of cinnamon, a few Sichuan peppercorns, and then pour in a bottle of beer to let it simmer."
"You used a whole bottle of beer for this dish!" Cara Preston exclaimed, making a big fuss. "Sister, do you have any idea that a bottle of beer costs several yuan? To just use it for cooking like that is such a waste!"
Vera knew she would make carping comments about it and didn’t plan to respond. But Master Nathan wouldn’t have it. He said calmly, "Vera, when you come to my house, I’ll have Lana Cheney buy a case of beer and put it in the kitchen. You can cook with it however you like."
Cara Preston had intended to find fault with Vera and pin the blame of being wasteful on her, but she never expected Master Nathan to say something like that.
She was instantly put in an awkward position, and her expression soured. ’She couldn’t understand why Master Nathan was so protective of Vera. Weren’t people of the older generation supposed to be more frugal? Why didn’t that principle apply to him?’
Vera smiled and said, "Okay!"
Master Nathan tried a bite of the spicy diced rabbit and praised it wholeheartedly, "This dish is delicious, too!"
When he reached for another piece, Vera blocked his chopsticks with her own. "Mr. Nathan, you have a weak heart. You shouldn’t eat spicy, stimulating foods like this. So, one bite to taste it is enough. This dish is for the rest of us!"
Master Nathan glared at her with mock indignation. "You little rascal, you’re already starting to boss me around!"
Vera laughed. "You’re the one who told me to take care of you. So, starting now, I have to find ways to reduce the frequency of your episodes, and that begins with your diet!"
After speaking, she picked up some of the stir-fried shredded potatoes with her chopsticks and placed them in his bowl. "The vinegar helps to improve circulation, which is beneficial for people with heart conditions. So, this dish is suitable for you."
Although her stir-fried potatoes were at the level of a high-end restaurant, Master Nathan was a die-hard carnivore. He protested having to eat vegetables and tried to grab some beer-braised duck again, only to be blocked by Vera once more. "That dish isn’t really suitable for you either. Duck is a bit greasy, which isn’t great for someone with a weak heart."
Master Nathan looked at Vera, caught between laughter and exasperation. "Vera, I never would have guessed. You have the makings of a little taskmaster!"
