Cara Preston felt there was a hidden meaning behind Vera Xavier’s words, and she couldn’t help but shiver.

Once the commotion died down, Rona Langdon finally emerged from her room. She shot Vera Xavier a cold glare, finding her more and more of an eyesore. Perhaps it was because of Zachary Preston’s obvious anger, but Rona, for once, didn’t fly into a screaming rage. Instead, she obediently went to make dinner.

Vera Xavier knew all about Rona Langdon’s petty schemes but chose not to expose them. Zachary Preston, on the other hand, rebuked Rona, "Look at what you’ve turned Cara into."

"The girl’s grown up now. She has a mind of her own. In this house, does Cara or Vera ever listen to a word I say?" Rona Langdon immediately deflected all the blame.

Zachary Preston was furious. He glared at her, but she acted as if she hadn’t seen it. Instead, she turned and shot a vicious glare at Vera Xavier. In response, Vera simply raised an eyebrow and smiled.

That smile of hers made Rona Langdon so angry she nearly threw the pot she was holding, but she managed to restrain herself.

Vera Xavier watched Rona Langdon’s reaction and her eyes narrowed slightly. ’Rona wants to wash her hands of this? It won’t be that easy!’

She said softly, "Dad, Daisy Archer and Wesley Kane came to the school today to make trouble for me. If Master Nathan hadn’t arrived just in time, I would have been ruined. There’s something about this that I just don’t understand. Didn’t Mom already go to the Kane family to call off the engagement? Why would they still show up at school to cause a scene? And also, how did they know I wasn’t home for those few days?" 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

Rona Langdon couldn’t take it anymore. She slammed down the pot she was holding, and a loud CLANG echoed from the kitchen. Then her shrill voice rang out, "Vera Xavier, what are you trying to imply? This is over! Why are you bringing it up again? Do you want to destroy the peace in this house?"

Vera Xavier looked at her and said, "Mom, why are you so agitated? I just wanted to remind Dad that the members of the Kane family are not good people. He should be careful of them. What if they fail to hurt me this time and decide to go to Dad’s office to cause a scene instead? What would happen then?"

Rona Langdon was at a loss for words. The more she looked at Vera Xavier, the more unnervingly clever she seemed. She knew what a formidable opponent Daisy Archer was, and yet this time, she hadn’t managed to get the better of Vera at all!

She didn’t want the matter to escalate, so she said in a placating tone, "The Kane family has made enough of a scene. They won’t cause any more trouble."

"And how would you know they won’t, Mom?" Vera asked.

Rona Langdon’s first instinct was to curse Vera out, but she bit back the words. Suppressing her anger, she snapped, "It’s just a guess."

"Wow, you’re amazing, Mom. You can even guess something like that," Vera said softly. "But I still think someone needs to have a word with the Kane family. Otherwise, they’ll think the Preston family is an easy target, and there’s no telling what they’ll do next."

Rona Langdon was about to object, but Zachary Preston had already spoken. "Vera has a point. I’ll go to the Kane’s place myself tomorrow. They bullied my daughter like this today. I absolutely will not let this slide!"

Rona Langdon immediately panicked. ’If Zachary goes, and Daisy Archer lets something slip, she’ll expose me! Zachary will tear me to shreds!’

The very thought terrified her! ’I absolutely cannot let Zachary go to the Kane family!’

So she said at once, "You’re always so busy with work, and you get home so late. You shouldn’t go. I’ll pay a visit to the Kane family tomorrow."
