The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 176: Going to Steal a Painting
Rona Langdon nodded. "I know what I’m doing, so don’t you worry."
Cara Preston’s eyes darted around for a moment. "You’re right, Mom," she said. "But I think this is a golden opportunity for me to make a good impression on Master Nathan."
"How so?" Rona Langdon asked. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Cara Preston lowered her voice. "Under normal circumstances, very few people can catch Master Nathan’s eye. To win his attention, I need something that will truly impress him, something that will change his opinion of me and leave him with a very good impression. That means the gift has to be elegant, impressive, and appropriate. At the same time, it has to make me look cultured and tasteful."
Rona Langdon frowned. "You’re not wrong, but where am I supposed to find something like that for you?"
Cara Preston leaned in and whispered in Rona Langdon’s ear, "I heard that Grandpa and Grandma have a *Lady Painting* by Thaddeus Thornton at their house. And Master Nathan has developed a real fondness for calligraphy and paintings in recent years. If I can give him a painting like that, he’ll definitely take a liking to me."
Rona Langdon had very little formal education and didn’t understand any of these things. She had no idea who this Thaddeus Thornton was, let alone what a *Lady Painting* was, but she did know that Grandpa and Grandma kept all of it in a chest at the old family home.
"Oh, is that all it is?" she said at once. "I’ll go get it for you tomorrow."
"Thanks, Mom! I knew you were the best!" Having achieved her goal, Cara Preston wasn’t stingy with her praise. She then added a reminder, "Mom, when you go get the painting, make sure Grandpa and Grandma don’t find out. You know... they don’t like me..."
"Got it." Rona Langdon nodded. In her mind, the paintings Grandpa and Grandma kept in that box were no more valuable than celebrity posters.
Only then did Cara Preston finally relax.
Just then, Zachary Preston returned from his shower. Cara quickly made an excuse and returned to her room.
Zachary Preston frowned as he watched Cara leave. He felt that she had changed recently—she always seemed to have something heavy on her mind, completely unlike her old self. So, he asked Rona Langdon, "What did Cara want from you?"
"It was nothing. Her fever just broke, and she’s not in the best spirits. She just came here to be coddled a bit," Rona Langdon answered.
Zachary Preston nodded, then said to Rona, "I know you dote on Cara, but don’t get things backward. Vera is our biological daughter, after all. Cara hasn’t been herself lately. I still think we should send her back to the Xavier family."
This was the second time he had brought it up, and Rona Langdon opposed it once more. "You know Vera and I aren’t close at all! Her personality is so cold and hard. Cara is the only one who understands what’s on my mind and will actually talk to me. If you send her away, you’ll be the death of me!"
Zachary Preston gave Rona a long, meaningful look and sighed. In the end, he didn’t bring up the subject again.
The next day, Vera Xavier spent the whole day thinking about Master Nathan’s birthday.
The problem was, she was essentially broke. All she had was the five hundred dollars Zachary Preston had given her earlier. She had spent one hundred on the stone last time and two hundred on a radio for her grandparents, leaving her with just two hundred.
Two hundred dollars was actually a respectable amount of money for that era. After all, she was just a poor high school student with no real source of income.
But Master Nathan was Nathaniel Nathan’s grandfather. She couldn’t just give him two hundred dollars cash for his birthday—not for the first one she’d be attending.
