Vera Xavier wanted to refuse again, but Nathaniel Nathan was getting a bit annoyed. He looked at her and said, "Just consider these as betrothal gifts."

Vera Xavier instantly recalled the betrothal gift list from the Kane Family she had seen that morning. Most of the items were flashy but impractical, and many weren’t even things she could use. Ultimately, they were all for Zachary Preston and Rona Langdon.

That pile of things and cash from the Kane Family combined wasn’t worth as much as this diamond ring of his.

She suddenly understood him a little better. This man’s way of expressing his feelings was always so peculiar.

After a moment of thought, she said, "In that case, I’ll accept them. But I can’t possibly take all this back with me at once. I’ll pick out two outfits, and the rest can stay with you for now."

Nathaniel Nathan’s brows furrowed instantly. The air in the car grew frigid, becoming oppressive and heavy.

Vera Xavier’s heart quivered. ’This guy is seriously terrifying!’

She quickly tried to placate him. "This way, I’ll have a reason to come see you often."

In an instant, the oppressive atmosphere in the car vanished. He looked at her and said, "You’d better not be lying to me."

Vera Xavier held out her hand. "If you don’t believe me, let’s make a pinky promise!"

"Childish!" Nathaniel Nathan grumbled, but still extended his hand.

Vera Xavier hooked her pinky around his. "Pinky promise, for a hundred years, no take-backs! Whoever breaks it is a big fat pig!"

Nathaniel Nathan glanced at her. The girl before him was radiant and full of life, a playful, clever light dancing in her eyes. Much of the worry and fear in his heart faded away. He looked at her and said, "Then keep your promise, if you don’t want to turn into a pig."

Vera Xavier, of course, readily agreed.

Nathaniel Nathan dropped her off at the gate of the residential compound. Vera Xavier first grabbed the large bag of books he had prepared for her, then pulled out two outfits and a pair of shoes from inside.

She refused Nathaniel Nathan’s offer to help. ’Are you kidding? If I brought Nathaniel Nathan into the compound right after breaking my engagement with Wesley Kane, who knows what the gossips in there would say. Rona Langdon would probably grill me for details, and the Kane Family might even take the opportunity to slander me.’

Just as she was about to leave, Nathaniel Nathan called out to her, "Vera Xavier, come here!"

Clutching the pile of things, Vera Xavier walked over to him, a bit bewildered. He glanced at the items in her arms, and she quickly put them down. "What is it?"

Nathaniel Nathan took her by the wrist and slipped a lustrous, emerald-green bracelet onto it. In the glow of the streetlight, she glanced down. ’Good heavens,’ the bracelet was actually Emperor Green—the legendary, finest grade of jadeite.

’This bracelet was worth far more than the diamond ring!’

She felt as if she’d just been smacked in the face with a pile of money. ’Tycoon Nathan, it’s not cool to flaunt your wealth like this!’

Afraid she might refuse it, Nathaniel Nathan said nonchalantly, "Bought it at a street stall. A buck fifty. Just something for you to wear for fun."

Vera Xavier: "..."

’Tycoon Nathan, don’t you try to fool me just because you think I’m uneducated! This girl knows her stuff!’

She cleared her throat. "A buck fifty each, huh? Why don’t you get me a dozen?"

Nathaniel Nathan: "..."

His gaze rested deeply upon her. She grinned and said, "It’s beautiful. I love it."

With that, she feigned knocking it against the car. He instantly grabbed her hand. "Even if it’s cheap, it was passed down from my grandmother to my mother. Don’t break it."

Vera Xavier’s interest was immediately piqued. "So, which is it? Did you buy this at a street stall for a buck fifty, or is it a family heirloom?"
