The Civil Servant's Job is to Raise The Furries!-Chapter 200 - 199: The Doting Dad Feeds
A tall figure leaned lazily against the car door, a black helmet casually tucked under his arm, with the moonlight highlighting his impressive shoulder and neck lines.
Hearing the sound of the motorbike, he straightened up, revealing a sharply defined face—bronze skin, with features from brow bone to nose like sharply carved, yet his lips curved into a smile, wild and unrestrained.
It was Qi Xiao.
Xu Ying instinctively slowed down, stopping beside Qi Xiao.
The glaring headlights of the motorbike swept across the paper bag in his hand—a familiar aroma of fried chicken wafting in the night breeze, prompting the little foxes, previously curled up quietly against her chest, to perk up their ears and sniff eagerly, their soft little paws anxiously scrabbling at her collar trying to get out.
"Made specially with less oil and salt," Qi Xiao shook the paper bag, his deep voice as gentle as a desert night’s breeze.
The little foxes instantly erupted with excitement, their fluffy tails wagging madly, kicking off with their hind legs as they scrambled into Qi Xiao’s arms.
[Ah ah ah, our caretaker is bringing us chicken nuggets!]
[Wuwuwu, it smells so good, I can smell the chicken legs!]
[Qi Xiao is the best! Love you, love you~ muamuamua!]
Several eager little ones climbed up his jacket, their tiny claws hooking onto the silver chain on his chest like swinging on a swing, leaving wet kisses with their tender little tongues on his chin.
This usually composed and sharp-looking cool guy was caught off guard by this sudden warm assault, a suspicious blush rising on his bronzed cheeks.
He fumbled to scoop up the scampering little furballs, and in the process, his helmet fell with a "thunk" onto the sandy ground, raising a small plume of golden sand dust.
[Wow, Daddy’s blushing!]
[Kiss him again! Kiss him again! Mwah mwah mwah]
The little foxes got even more excited, eagerly rubbing their fluffy little heads into his neck nook.
"Hey, stop it you guys..."
Qi Xiao helplessly supported the overexcited Fox Sansan and Fox Si Bao with one hand, bending down to pick up the helmet, the lines on the back of his neck becoming taut, revealing a hint of an imperceptible redness.
A few furry little guys were still rooting around in his arms, their tail tips brushing past his chin, making him shy away from the tickle.
Xu Ying stood not far away, arms crossed, watching the scene with an involuntary grin curving her lips.
These little traitors, using all the coquetry they reserve for her on Qi Xiao—all for just a few pieces of fried chicken?
She thought indignantly, her fingers unconsciously scratching her arm, a strange twinge of jealousy rising in her heart.
Fox Xiao Wu, being too small to squeeze into Qi Xiao’s embrace, turned its head to see Xu Ying standing alone, and immediately wiggled back to her, burrowing into her arm.
[Sister, they’ve all gone to Qi Xiao. I’ll stay with you.]
It nuzzled Xu Ying’s wrist with its wet nose, [You’re more important than chicken nuggets.]
Xu Ying’s eyes instantly warmed as she hugged the little one tightly, "Wuwuwu, our Xiao Wu is still the sweetest!"
The other little foxes immediately scrambled to show their love for Xu Ying:
[That’s not it!!!]
[We’re snuggling with Daddy because of you, Sister!]
The night breeze suddenly carried a hint of warmth closer.
Xu Ying looked up to find Qi Xiao standing right in front of her, at some unknown point, with an extra packet of oiled paper in his hand.
"This is for you too."
He spoke casually, yet his actions were a bit awkward, and as he handed the packet to her, his fingertips brushed fleetingly across her palm.
The grease seeped through the paper, spreading a tempting golden hue, and warmth transferred through the thin paper to her skin.
Xu Ying’s eyes lit up instantly, a warm feeling spreading within her. She had just about digested what she ate from the show, and now someone was bringing her hot, delicious supper post-work; it was amazing.
As Qi Xiao turned to leave, Xu Ying finally noticed the tense line of his neck as he walked away.
Fox Sansan, perched on his shoulder, winked at her, sneakily forming a heart shape with its little paw.
[Wow, it’s a love-filled supper!]
"Silly yellow-haired girl, what are you talking about!"
Xu Ying suddenly felt the chicken nuggets in her hand were burning hot.
Hearing Xu Ying call her "yellow-haired girl," Fox Sansan felt aggrieved. [I don’t think that’s a compliment from humans.]
Fox Si Bao, chewing on chicken nuggets, muttered unclearly, [Our fur is starting to turn yellow, and since you’re a vixen, that makes you a yellow-haired girl.]
[Fox Boss and I are yellow-haired boys, and Xiao Wu is just a little yellow-haired.]
Fox Boss rolled a big eye at this, silly little siblings!
Fox Sansan scratched its head, [Is that so?]
Listening to the silly, cute banter of the little foxes almost made Xu Ying laugh out loud.
Seeing Qi Xiao about to leave, Xu Ying called out to him, "Qi Xiao, you made these chicken nuggets yourself, haven’t you eaten any yet?"
"Why don’t we have some together as a late-night snack?"
Qi Xiao paused, nodding, "That sounds good."
However, the tips of his ears secretly turned red.
The two sat side by side on the sand dune, surrounded by little foxes devouring the chicken nuggets, occasionally letting out satisfied purrs.
Qi Xiao suddenly spoke, "Was today’s recording... exhausting?" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
Xu Ying took a bite of the crispy fried chicken, looking content, "Not too bad, it was kind of a novel experience."
"The awe of entertainment industry stars has been shattered."
Xu Ying shook her head, her tone helpless, "There was a time in college when I used to really enjoy Ming Xueying’s dramas, posting over ten status updates about it."
Qi Xiao lowered his head, speaking softly, "In my orchard’s greenhouse, I’m growing rose grapes; they’re fully ripe now."
The night breeze brushed across his stray bangs, "After the recording, would you like to be the first one to pick the grapes? A little reward to relax?"
Xu Ying paused mid-bite of her chicken nugget.
"How... did you know I like rose grapes?"
Qi Xiao’s Adam’s apple bobbed slightly, his gaze falling on the distant sand dune, "Didn’t you post on your timeline wishing ’if only I could lie under the grape arbor and eat to my heart’s content’?" He paused, "I put up three more pergolas."
[Ah ah ah, he peeked at Sister’s timeline!] Fox Sansan suddenly poked its head out from Qi Xiao’s embrace.
[And secretly set up pergolas!] Fox Si Bao chimed in immediately.
[Qi Xiao is blushing!] Fox Xiao Wu excitedly rolled around on Xu Ying’s lap.
Though she couldn’t understand the fox language, Qi Xiao could almost guess what they were gossiping about, the way the little guys were excitedly squeaking, full of curiosity.
He cleared his throat, about to defend himself, when suddenly a shadow swept over—a flock of fruit bats, attracted by the delicious scent. They circled the fried chicken a few times, only to find out it was meat, huffing in disappointment as they flew away.
[They don’t eat meat!]
Fox Xiao Wu perked up in surprise.
"Because just like a certain picky little friend!" Xu Ying poked Xiao Wu’s belly.
Then, she smiled brightly, answering Qi Xiao, "Sure!"
Under the night sky where the Milky Way hung low, Qi Xiao and Xu Ying sat on the sand, stargazing.
Having had their fill, the little foxes sprawled out haphazardly across their laps, dozing off.
Fox Si Bao even exposed its fluffy belly, sprawling like a fox pancake on Qi Xiao’s knee.
