Chapter 136: The charity gala (Part – 1)

The day of the charity gala...

The evening sky was a deep, velvety blue, studded with stars that twinkled above the stately estate. The grand entrance to the mayor’s mansion was a breathtaking sight.

The mansion itself was an imposing structure, its elegant architecture illuminated by dozens of strategically placed lights that cast a warm, golden glow across the sprawling lawns and meticulously manicured gardens.

A red carpet had been rolled out from the circular driveway to the grand front doors, lined with tall, flickering torches that lent an air of old-world grandeur to the event. Guests in elegant evening attire were making their way up the steps, greeted by well-dressed attendants who opened the massive, ornately carved doors, revealing the opulent interior beyond.

Willow and Bella stepped out of their car, the sound of gravel crunching beneath their heels as they moved onto the carpet. Willow, with her sleek auburn hair and sophisticated grace, wore a deep emerald gown that hugged her figure, the color bringing out the rich tones in her hair and eyes. The dress shimmered slightly as she moved, catching the light and drawing admiring glances from those nearby.

Beside her, Bella was equally stunning in a midnight blue gown that swept the ground as she walked. The fabric of her dress was soft and flowing, cinched at the waist with a delicate, jeweled belt that sparkled under the lights. Her golden hair was styled in loose waves, framing her face and highlighting her serene beauty.

Bella took a shaky breath, the nervous energy within her almost palpable. This was her first time attending such a gathering, and uncertainty gnawed at her.

Sensing her unease, Willow gently clasped her hand. "It’s okay," she whispered reassuringly. "I’m right here."

Bella glanced at Willow, managing a small smile as she tried to steady herself. But as she crossed the threshold into the grand mansion, her legs betrayed her, trembling slightly. The muted hum of conversations, punctuated by bursts of laughter and the delicate clink of glasses, welcomed them.

Her breath caught as she took in the opulence surrounding her. The mansion was a masterpiece of luxury, with a crystal chandelier hanging overhead, its countless facets catching the light and scattering it in a dazzling display of rainbows across the room.

Bella’s gaze wandered in awe, tracing the elegant curves of a wide staircase that spiraled gracefully to the second floor. There, guests leaned casually over the balustrade, observing the newcomers with a mix of curiosity and nonchalance.

Fresh garlands of flowers adorned the banister, their sweet scent mingling with the air, already heavy with the fragrance of high-end perfume.

At the far end of the room, an entire wall of glass revealed the estate’s gardens in all their glory. Outside, fairy lights twinkled among the trees like stars come down to earth, while fountains sparkled under the moon’s soft glow, their waters dancing to a silent rhythm.

The music, delicate and refined, wove through the air, setting a serene and elegant mood for the evening. Around them, waitstaff glided effortlessly between the guests, trays of champagne and delicate canapés in hand.

Bella felt a mix of awe and trepidation as she stood there, trying to absorb the scene. This was a world far removed from her own, a place where elegance and extravagance were the norms, and she couldn’t help but feel like an outsider looking in.

"This is even more extravagant than I imagined," she murmured, almost in disbelief.

Willow chuckled softly. "The mayor certainly knows how to put on a show. Come, I need to greet a few friends." With a gentle tug, she led Bella deeper into the mansion, gliding through the throng with a natural elegance that turned heads as they passed.

Across the hall, Ivy and Zack were engaged in conversation with a group of elite guests. But Ivy’s attention wavered as her gaze caught sight of Bella. Her brow furrowed in surprise.

"Bella?" she muttered under her breath, astonished. "What is she doing here?" The thought of seeing someone like Bella, a simple country girl, in such an exclusive setting was almost unfathomable to her.

Noticing Ivy’s distraction, Zack leaned in closer and asked, "What’s caught your eye?"

"I..." Ivy’s scowl deepened as she looked up at him. "Look over there," she said, nodding in Bella’s direction. "How on earth did Willow bring Bella here?"

Zack followed her gaze and his eyes landed on Bella, who looked stunning in her elegant dress. The sight made his heart skip a beat. The dress was a striking shade of blue—Rose’s favorite color. For a fleeting moment, he was overcome with the illusion that it was Rose standing there, not Bella.

His pulse raced, and a wave of emotion washed over him. It felt as if Rose had come back to life, just for him. The urge to rush to her, to hold her close and never let her go, surged within him. In that instant, all he wanted was to keep her by his side, to protect her from ever fading away again.

Just as Zack took a step toward Bella, a sharp tug on his arm stopped him in his tracks. "Where do you think you’re going?" Ivy hissed, her irritation clear in every word. "We have a purpose here, Zack. Don’t forget, that you need to secure an investor. Can you focus on that?"

Zack looked back at her, her words cutting through the fog of emotions that had clouded his mind. She was right—he couldn’t afford to be distracted, not now. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to refocus.

’I’ll talk to her later,’ he promised himself, pushing the impulse aside.

With a curt nod, he turned back to the conversation he had abandoned, trying to re-engage with the group.

While Willow engaged herself in conversing with her friends, Bella took the liberty to look around, her gaze searching for the familiar figure. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

The crowd was a mix of the city’s most influential—politicians, philanthropists, business moguls, and socialites—each exuding an air of sophistication and importance. It was clear that this was a place where connections were forged and deals were sealed, all under the guise of a charitable gathering.

As Bella scanned the room, her heart gave a sudden leap. There, standing near one of the grand windows, was Theodore. His tall frame and confident demeanor made him stand out among the crowd.

He was deep in conversation with a group of impeccably dressed men, but when his eyes met Bella’s, a slow, mischievous smile curved his lips.

The look in his eyes held a promise of something more, something only the two of them would understand. Bella felt her breath catch as the room around her seemed to blur, leaving just the two of them in that moment.

Theodore’s gaze never wavered, and despite the distance between them, it was as if he had reached out and touched her, pulling her into his orbit with that single, knowing smile.
