The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1044: Eyeing It
Chapter 1044: Eyeing It
Gao Yang started. It was Telekinesis!
Qilin had pinned Gao Yang down with the Talent—the closer to the user, the more powerful its grasp was; Gao Yang was within one meter of Qilin.
It was as if Gao Yang and Qilin were on a seesaw, but Gao Yang only had one meter of plank as leverage, while Qilin had ten meters on his side. It was impossible for Gao Yang to lift Qilin.
While pinning Gao Yang to the air with full force, Qilin couldn’t make another attack or manipulate his corpse puppets, similar to when he used Statues. However, the living puppets didn’t need his control; they acted as long as they had orders.
Liao Liao, Gregor, and Ke Yo made their moves.
Gao Yang tried to force another teleportation, but it was no use.
“Aghh...”
His full force still wasn’t enough to break out of the grasp.
After all, Qilin had temporarily severed his connections to all his corpse puppets and stopped using his other Talents in favor of fully focusing his energy on Telekinesis. With the bonuses to Willpower from level 8 Eidos and Puppeteer, his will would only be more powerful than Gao Yang’s. It was impossible for him to lose the battle of Willpower.
Bang, bang, bang! Three bullets hit Gao Yang in the forehead. Gao Yang could at most maintain the Golden Armor under the pressure of Telekinesis, and only barely; he couldn’t thicken the armor.
Immediately after, another three bullets hit the same spot.
There was an audible sound as the golden barrier protecting his head cracked, and he could not draw his energy to restore it.
Poisonous wind converged above Gao Yang and Qilin, morphing into a skull with a gaping mouth. A wisp of smoke flew out of its mouth, condensing into a black needle and shooting toward the crack of the armor.
Gao Yang felt an incredulous laugh stuck in his throat.
He didn’t expect to be cornered by Telekinesis of all things so soon after they started fighting. He had to admit that he had underestimated his enemy. He hadn’t anticipated how many tricks one could pull with access to over twenty thoroughly integrated Talents—no one outside of Qilin would have known it was possible.
Gao Yang had no choice but to shift his stats to Willpower to break out of Telekinesis, but using the trick now would leave Gao Yang at a further disadvantage...
At the last second, a black gold dart crushed the black poisonous needle shooting toward Gao Yang.
Gao Yang brightened up.
Telekinesis loosened its hold—Qilin had retracted his power!
Gao Yang immediately teleported away, while a figure rushed toward Qilin, long hair flying in the air with purple lightning crackling around the long blade she wielded.
Qing Ling thrust at Qilin’s forehead. Qilin had pulled his energy back, but didn’t have the time to use all of his defensive Talents.
Armoring himself with Phantom, he lifted his right hand and used Muscles and Bone Growth on his arm.
Crackle. The moment the long blade clashed with Qilin’s arm, violent waves of lighting burst out in a fan, the shockwaves crashing all the burnt buildings behind Qilin.
Three seconds later, the afterwaves of the lightning slash receded. Qilin was still blanketed by crackling purple currents. The shadow armor on his right arm cracked, revealing a broken sleeve and bleeding skin.
Qilin frowned. He wasn’t surprised that Zhang Wei was able to wake Qing Ling. Qilin hadn’t customized a dream for her, and Zhang Wei’s Confidence was Eidos’ greatest bane. What he didn’t expect was for Qing Ling to be daring enough to fight him at a close range.
Qilin’s left green eye shook, using Brain Formatting point-blank.
Although Qing Ling had woken up from her dream, she only gained immunity against illusions, not all psychic attacks; her current psychic defense was no match for Qilin.
Clink!
Golden energy burst out of her forehead, shrouding her with a Golden Armor. It was the insurance Gao Yang had given her before they even set out for this fight.
The Golden Armor could resist psychic attacks, but only to a degree. Facing Brain Formatting at such a close range, it would at most buy Qing Ling a second.
She felt a numbness in the back of her head. She tried to jump back to increase their distance.
Running now? It’s too late!
Qilin’s eyes glinted as he pushed Brain Formatting harder, but QIng Ling vanished and reappeared thirty meters away, lowered to the ground from Gao Yang’s arms.
He tossed her the Green Dog Demon Blade. “From your master.”
She caught it, wielding her Tang Dao and the Demon Blade in each hand, swinging them downward. Then the Xiu Dao, Butterfly Twin Blades, four additional single-edged blades, and three Black Gold darts hovered around her.
“I’ve been eyeing it,” Qing Ling said coolly.
Gao Yang smiled and turned around, pressing his back against hers.
They considered the corpse puppets and living puppets closing in on them—Qilin had re-established his connections to them.
“Where are Zhang Wei and Heavenly Dog?” Gao Yang asked.
“Zhang Wei went off to wake the others. Heavenly Dog blacked out. I damaged the puppet brand on him.”
Gao Yang could picture her occupying Heavenly Dog while manipulating a Black Gold dart to sneak up on him—it had been a proven method.
“What do we do?” Qing Ling took a small step back to press their backs together. With Gao Yang at her six, she could remain calm no matter how many enemies they faced.
They would win with him here. That had always been the case.
“Can you keep Qilin busy for a minute—no, thirty seconds? Or just twenty seconds...”
“Who do you think you’re talking to?” Qing Ling said irritatedly. “At least thirty seconds.”
“Right, I’ll take care of the puppets first.”
Gao Yang knew his priorities. Puppets first.
He and Qing Ling would only have to deal with Qilin with his puppets taken out, even if QIlin had access to all their Talents; without dealing with the puppets, on the other hand, Qilin could fight alongside the puppets while sharing their Talents seamlessly; the possible combinations were too numerous to confront.
“Alright.” Qing Ling agreed easily. Gao Yang was responsible for the strategy, and she would execute it. As simple as that.
“Be careful.”
“You too.”

A gust of cold night wind swept past, rustling Gao Yang’s coat and Qing Ling’s ponytail.
He sheathed his dagger and clenched his fists, eyes calm.
She dual-wielded her blades while leaning forward, gaze fierce.
They vanished.
