The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1093: Approaching Ending
Chapter 1093: Approaching Ending
Gao Yang lowered his head, looking at his palm and letting out a self-deprecating laugh. “My mother’s a life monster, my father a human. If monsters are humans who exist and don’t exist, do I exist as a child born between the two?”
Baili Yi shook his head. “I can’t answer that now.”
The others fell silent.
“My mentor believes that the Divine Scion is a special probability, a chance to find a way out under the Gluttonous Snake’s Zero Probability. He called it the Miracle Probability and the Lucky Probability.”
“He believed that monsters are byproducts of the clash between the Gluttonous Snake and the Heavenly Way. Overall, the Gluttonous Snake has a greater impact on monsters, while the Heavenly Way mainly imposes restrictions on them. But the Heavenly Way isn’t a pushover. They created the Divine Scions through humans and monsters.”
“My mentor thinks that the Divine Scion is the Heavenly Way’s gamble. There has always been one Divine Scion in each round. The previous Divine Scions all failed. It seems that even the Lucky Probability isn’t lucky enough.”
Gao Yang fell silent.
White Dew sneered with twisted lips. “Can he be more unlucky than the Spectres?”
Knowing what the Spectres had experienced, everyone fell silent.
Some among the group wanted to offer comfort, but White Dew’s icy presence deterred them. And whatever they could say would be nothing but platitudes.
Crimson Bee opened a bottle of beer and drank deep, laughing. “My head’s hurting from all the thinking. Forget it. I’m just a small shrimp. Why should I worry about all that?”
“Well, I’m too lazy to think. Whatever Brother Yang is, I’m following him!” Old Seven grabbed a can of beer too.
“Same,” said Lying Wood. He adjusted his glasses with a smile and turned to Liao Liao. “Sister Liao, lend me your notes later.”
Liao Liao had been quietly taking notes throughout the meeting.

“Huh?” Liao Liao awkwardly waved a hand. “Well, I’ve been quite confused. I’ve only jotted down a few keywords.”
Ting Ting teased with a laugh, “Sister Liao Liao is clearly a grade A student.”
“Mr. Baili,” Adept Horse suddenly spoke up. “Why do you believe that we are the last round? Have you seen the index like Qilin had?”
“No, it’s only my speculation.”
“Your reasons being?” War Tiger tossed the cigarette into the bonfire, rummaging through his pocket again.
“In my mentor’s round, the fifth round, the Heavenly Way was losing ground, but still has a vast space. The total population, both humans and monsters, was as big as three hundred million. There were three million humans and a little less than 2000 awakeners. Multiple people could comprehend the same Talent, and all Talents could reach level 8. Of course, among the top and bottom twelve Talents, as well as Judge, only one owner of each Talent could reach level 8.”
“In my round, the sixth round, things deteriorated further. There were less than 700 awakeners, and half of the Talents became exclusive to only one owner. Most Talents couldn’t reach level 8.”
He turned to Adept Horse. “Now look at your round. Your territory has become so small, with only a few hundred humans. The Talents are all exclusive, and only the top twelve Talents can reach level 8, while Talents from 101 and below can only reach level 4 outside of special means. In fact, most bottom Talents can only reach level 3—part of it is because of me.”
“Looking at the trend, do you think there will be another round?”
“I understand.” Adept Horse nodded, looking a little dejected.
Baili Yi sighed softly. “Everyone, the apple in dual states is falling to the ground. Zero Probability is going to be complete. We’re running out of time.”
“The Heavenly Way...” Nine Frost trailed off.
“The Heavenly Way,” Baili Yi continued for Nine Frost, “Will have never existed just like us.”
Another stretch of silence fell. The bonfire blazed bright, firewood crackling and sputtering embers. Though the air around them was warm, a deep chill spread between heaven and earth. Many reflexively tightened their jackets and blankets.
“You’re dismissed!” War Tiger stood up and declared into the megaphone, scattering the cold. “You have some time to digest what you learned. Stretch, take a dump or piss if you need to. Let’s start the next class in ten minutes!”
This time, the responses were lukewarm. Many remained by the bonfire, chatting quietly or sitting in silence. Only a few rose to move around or go on a toilet break in the underground laboratory.
Upon a small dune, two tall figures stood. A group of crows hovered above Nine Frost’s head. Receiving his order, they scattered in all directions. Chen Ying closed her eyes, using Sensory to scan the few-meter radius.
It wasn't that they didn't trust Gao Yang's double to keep watch. They had simply grown accustomed to caution after coming this far. Scouting during rest had become second nature.
Chen Ying let out a long sigh after deactivating Sensory, glancing sideways at Nine Frost.
She had done that to start a conversation, yet the man continued staring ahead without any reaction. Chen Ying could only turn back and awkwardly brush her wind-swept hair.
Nine Frost spoke up after a long moment, his voice low and smooth. “Yes?”
Chen Ying feigned nonchalance. “No, I just want to remind you that you can ask Baili Yi—”
“About the Godbearer Cult?” Nine Frost continued.
“Yes. He knows a lot. He should know about the Godbearer Cult, too.”
Nine Frost nodded. “I’ll ask, but I’ll look at the big picture first. Our biggest threats at the moment are the death monsters and Zero Probability. My personal hatred—”
“Nine Frost,” Chen Ying interrupted. “Aren’t you worried? At this rate, you may never have the chance to get revenge on the Godbearer Cult.”
Nine Frost fell silent.
Chen Ying let out a bitter laugh. When Little Tian first died, she had been trapped in guilt and pain. At the time, Nine Frost had paid special attention to her and kept her company with work as an excuse, worried that she would do something reckless.
Then Azure Dragon died, as did Qilin and Surnamed Li. Little Tian had been avenged.
While she still felt guilt and pain, it wasn’t to the same extent. Chen Ying had forgiven herself. Only now was she able to thank and worry about Nine Frost.
They were similar. They had been carrying hate and couldn’t stop until they had revenge. That was why Chen Ying wanted Nine Frost to have his as well. However, the death monsters and Baili Yi showed up and threw a wrench into their situation. It seemed that the Cult wasn’t really their obstacle now.
Nine Frost understood her.
He gazed far across the melancholy deep blue desert.
“There’s a saying, Chen Ying. I wonder if you’ve heard it.”
