The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1101: Split Up
Chapter 1101: Split Up
Surnamed Li! Her body wasn’t incinerated! Had a death monster somehow gained access to Prophet through the body? Possibly.
My double would’ve immediately burned himself seeing Surnamed Li. Prophet comes with a terrifying ability: Fate Slides. That can glimpse into the target’s future by contracting the target or the target’s organic tissues.
My double was me, and Surnamed Li could’ve seen my Fate Slides through the double. What happened at the S Base would happen once more.
Speaking of which, how did Greed find us? Did that have something to do with Prophet, too?
Greed, greed monsters. Is Greed able to take over an awakener’s body like greed monsters?
Could it be...that Greed had taken over Surnamed Li and found us through Prophet?
Wait, even so, Greed would need to form a contract with human tissues. It would be impossible to just glimpse into our Fate Slides without a medium.
Oh! My hand!
Back at the dried well, my hand was crushed by...Pride, leaving behind blood and severed fingers. Surnamed Li, overtaken by Greed, must have glimpsed into my Fate Slides through my broken fingers and found us.
If that’s the case, we’re in great danger.
We have to confirm it, or the threat will never cease.
Gao Yang lifted his head and opened his eyes.
“Got an answer?” Vermilion Bird’s hand remained on his shoulder.
Gao Yang nodded. “Conclusion, Surnamed Li’s body might have been taken over by the death monster, Greed. Greed found me with Fate Slides.” He raised his right hand. “I lost this hand once at the dried well.”
Vermilion Bird recalled the moment Wang Zikai crushed Gao Yang’s hand. A shudder ran down her spine as she connected the dots. “That makes sense! It’s entirely possible!”
“I can’t stay with you in the short term. It’s too dangerous.”
Vermilion Bird nodded. “Understood.”
Gao Yang rose to his feet and tied up his long hair. “I have to return to Li City to verify if Surnamed Li's body is still at the funeral home. All of you should find a secure location to hide.”
“We will. Be careful.” Vermilion Bird trusted Gao Yang’s ability to survive. Then she asked, “What about the diary?”
Gao Yang considered it. “I’ll keep it with me.”
“Very well.” Vermilion Bird handed him the dairy.
He tucked it into the inner breast pocket of his thin trenchcoat. Qing Ling, who had been standing vigilant by his side, spoke up:
“I’ll go with you, Gao Yang.”
He shook his head. “No, you stay.”
Qing Ling repeated coldly, “We’ll stay together.”
Gao Yang paused.
“No matter what happens, Gao Yang, I’ll be supporting you by your side. I only have one thing to ask you.”
“What is it?”
“You must win.”
Gao Yang gave her a small smile. “You’re one of our strongest fighters, Qing Ling. You have to stay with the others and protect them. This isn’t a fight I’m walking into on my own. I need all of you to win.”
Qing Ling stared at him, assessing his sincerity. A few seconds later, she conceded. She turned away and scoffed, “Whatever.”
“Wait,” Gao Yang stopped her.
She turned around. “What?”
Gao Yang went up to press his index finger to her forehead, leaving a golden “mole”. Then he did the same to Vermilion Bird and War Tiger. That exhausted his quotas of granting Golden Armor.
He gave the three of them a final glance. “We’ll split up. Be careful.”
“Leave it to me.” War Tiger nodded firmly. He planned to take everyone to West Nation for refuge, but kept silent about the specifics lest Gao Yang's Fate Slides leaked the information.
Gao Yang nodded and vanished into thin air.
After that, White Dew came up to Vermilion Bird and said, “I’m leaving as well.”
“You’re not coming with us?” Vermilion Bird asked in surprise.
“The death monsters are going to kill the awakeners. What does that have to do with a Spectre?” White Dew curled her lips. “Gao Yang’s my friend, but not you.”
Vermilion Bird didn’t know what to say, so she simply smiled and replied, “Of course.”
Without saying goodbye, White Dew turned to leave.
“Aren’t you going to convince her to stay?” War Tiger crossed his arms and commented. “Maybe she’s just a tsundere, and she’ll stay if you sweet-talk her.”
Vermilion Bird glared at him. “Then you do it.”
“Nah,” War Tiger said flippantly. “Human and Spectre, we don’t mesh.”
...
Western region of West Nation, six o’clock in the morning.
The secret base of the Twelve Zodiac Signs lay in an underground cave system under a rocky wasteland. Inside a dim, empty room, a Black Gold hibernation chamber stood by the far wall, connected to complex machinery.
Sitting on a foldable chair, War Tiger lounged back with his hands behind his head and his legs crossed on the lid of the hibernation chamber, a half-burned cigarette in his mouth. The blinking signal lights lit up his unkempt face intermittently.

He took the cigarette and shook off some ash, staring up at the ceiling with unfocused eyes. “I’ve met three death monsters: Wang Zikai, Gao Xinxin, and my old man.”
“My hunch said that Wang Zikai’s the strongest. Pride is the head of the seven deadly sins, and the brat was ridiculously powerful even before his monsterhood awakened. As the saying goes, a whitewashed villain becomes thirty percent weaker, and a hero turning to the dark side becomes ten times stronger.”
“And Gao Xinxin has shown her incredible speed and offensive power. I don’t know how we’re going to defeat her unless Qing Ling and I fight her together with a triple buff from Vermilion Bird.”
“The old bastard Mark is quite strong, too. Judging by what I’ve seen of him, he should be at least as strong as Azure Dragon.”
“We’ll have to put our hope in the Three Double-Hours of Heavenly Tribulation. I wonder how much the death monsters will be weakened.”
“Even if everything goes smoothly, and we kill all the death monsters that night, however, I’ve got not the faintest idea where we should go after that.”
“So, that’s the situation, Dragon. You should wake up, or you’re really going to miss everything in your sleep.”
War Tiger stared at the signal lights on the hibernation chamber after the whole spiel.
There were three lights: red, yellow, and green. The red light was currently flickering, meaning Dragon was in hibernation. Once the yellow light started to flicker, it would mean Dragon was awakening—a process that could take anywhere from half an hour to a couple of days. The green light would only come on when Dragon was fully awake and the chamber could be opened.
War Tiger waited for minutes. Yet the red light continued to flicker.
Enraged, he kicked the hibernation chamber hard. “What the hell’s wrong with you? You’re gonna keep sleeping?! Qilin’s dead! The twelve Rune Circuits are gathered! Don’t you want to open the Gates? You’re been sleeping for so long. Get up and do that already!”
“Or have you been lying to us? Was Qilin right that there is no doorway out of the mess? There’s only the damn Gluttonous Snake! Only Zero Probability!”
War Tiger kicked the hibernation chamber again.
“Death monsters! Seven of them! All tier 0 fighters! All with whole sets of legendary equipment coming to destroy our nexus! How can you still stay asleep?!”
The more he ranted, the angrier he got. He shot to his feet and kicked the chair away, lighting another cigarette and taking a drag.
“This is it, Dragon. I’ll give you the time of this cigarette. Wake up now, or I’m breaking your coffin open!”
