The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1166: Battle of the Curtain Call
Chapter 1166: Battle of the Curtain Call
Twenty to midnight, Gao Xin knelt on all fours, drenched in sweat and panting for breaths, his body covered in freshly dug soil. A shovel lay on his side, and behind him was a grave that had just been filled.
“Brat...what were you thinking, digging up your grandfather’s coffin?!” Gao Xin flipped around and lay on the ground. “Ugh, I’m beat. I’m dead beat...”
He was ready to tear his hair out.
Half an hour ago, Gao Xin climbed up the mountain with joss papers and alcohol, planning to quickly pay tribute to his family. When he arrived, though, he found out that his father’s grave was left dug up.
Gao Xin knew about the death monsters, so he immediately guessed that Gao Yang had dug the grave on April first. But Gao Yang never told Gao Xin about it, so it remained in that state.
The act itself was bad enough, and it was made worse by the fact that it had been exposed to the elements for so long. Gao Xin hurriedly fetched a shovel and filled the hole, panting while he did so.
Gao Xin was glad that he had come half an hour early, or he wouldn’t have had the time for this. Then he would die regretting it. He didn’t know how he should explain it when he found his old man in the netherworld.
He rested for a minute. Checking his watch, he saw that he had just enough time to complete his work.
He dusted the soil from him and took joss papers from the small bamboo basket he carried. According to the traditions of his hometown, he poured out liquor and quickly prayed for his father. Then he visited his mother’s tomb before finally visiting the shared grave where his brother and sister-in-law were buried.
He naturally started speaking to them, but he didn’t dare to tell the truth.
It was too cruel: Gao Yang was going to confront his best friend Wang Zikai and his sister Gao Xinxin in a fight to the death.
If Gao Shou and Lin Yue knew, who should they give their blessings to? Their son? Their daughter?
Neither choice would be right when both were their blood. Gao Xin sat by the tombstone and poured himself a glass of liquor, downing it to warm his body.
He looked up at the starry night sky. “I was heartbroken when you and Sister-in-Law first passed away, Brother. I didn’t think it was worth it for you to sacrifice yourselves, but I changed my mind. You’ve run to the other world at just the right time.”
“You went with a bang, leaving this mess to me. It’s easy for you to tell me to take care of your two children...”
“No matter how tonight pans out, don’t blame me. I’ve never been somebody since I was a kid. I’ve done my best, truly...”
A bout of coughs interrupted his words. It took some time for him to recover. He lifted his hand from his mouth. The palm was covered in blood.
“It’s time for me to go.” Gao Xin rose to his feet with difficulty, patting the tombstone with his bloodied hand. “No rush. I’ll talk to you later.”
He picked up the shovel from the ground. After some hesitation, he placed it between his legs like a flying broom, readying for a flight.
He smiled self-consciously. “Ugh, this is embarrassing. Good thing no one’s here to see me.”
He held the wooden handle of the shovel with both hands, concentrating and shouting, “Take off!”
No response.
That didn’t surprise Gao Xin.
“Fly!”
“Fly!”
“Fly!”
His awkward shout echoed in the quiet forest, scaring birds into taking flight. Finally, the shovel carried him out of the forest and streaked across the night sky, leaving a trail of colorful sparkles under the moon.

...
Two minutes later, Gao Xin arrived at the dried well with the magical shovel—or where the well had been. Standing in its place was a grandiose yet weathered crimson palace. At its heart stretched a tall staircase, leading to the Throne of Pride.
A blond young man lounged on the throne. The heart behind him thumped, seemingly connected to the earth itself.
Gao Xin and Wang Zikai were bound by Judge’s contract, allowing the man to accurately sense the monster’s location, as well as Gao Yang’s and Gao Xinxin’s. Still, Gao Xin would feel more assured seeing Wang Zikai in person.
Gao Xin stood at the bottom of the staircase. He was going to walk up, but he couldn’t even take a step—perhaps because he was too weak, or because Pride’s intangible presence was too powerful.
He sat down cross-legged and looked up as if looking at a giant.
Wang Zikai’s voice came from above. “Are you here to confirm if I’m following the rules?”
“Yes. He will stand no chance if you go to him now.” Blood streaked down from the corners of Gao Xin’s mouth. “Thankfully, you didn’t break out of my rules at first, and it’s too late for you to do it now.”
Wang Zikai smiled slightly. “Even without Judge’s rules, I’ll be waiting for Gao Yang tonight. I alone should be his opponent. It is the fate I’ve decided for us.”
“Ah.” Gao Xin returned the smile with no regret. “Then I’ve wasted my effort.”
“I won’t say that.” Wang Zikai propped his head up with his elbow on the throne’s arm. “It makes no difference to me, but the other death monsters might have killed those standing in their way. Restricting me is restricting them through me. So in that way, you’ve earned them more time.”
“Haha, is that supposed to comfort me?” Gao Xin’s face grew paler and paler.
“Yes, but not really.” Wang Zikai looked down at him lazily. “You should know that everything you do will be in vain.”
“In vain... Will that end up being the case...” Gao Xin slowly lowered his head, his voice quieting. “Will things end that way...?”
After some time, the man stopped speaking, and his body stilled.
The price of judging two death monsters and the Divine Scion must be paid with life. Gao Xin had always known that, but he hadn’t hesitated for even a second.
He was only able to prolong his life to this day because the contract came into effect on the twentieth of May.
The moment Gao Xin died, the moon in the sky became massive and pure white. The whole city was washed of all colors. It entered a dual state of existence and nonexistence.
Wang Zikai and the palace around him retained their colors. Sitting on the throne, he watched as the insignificant man died and scattered away.
Thump, thump, thump.
The heart behind the throne continued to beat powerfully and lonesomely.
The Three Double-Hours of Heavenly Tribulation arrived.
The Battle of the Curtain Call officially began.
