The Cultivator's Reborn to 1970s-Chapter 222 - 186
Chapter 222: Chapter 186
Lan Tian turned her head away, took a deep breath, and lowered her eyelids to hide the laughter in her eyes.
Chun Mei was also a prideful person, about the same age as the others. When Yanhua found a man from the county, a doctor no less, and brought him back flaunting her success, Chun Mei always remembered that. Everyone in the village praised Yanhua, saying a golden phoenix had flown out of their mountain nest.
So later on, driven by that sting from Yanhua, Chun Mei married someone who ran a variety store. Who would have thought that Yanhua would cheat on her husband and end up divorced? Chun Mei laughed about it for almost a month, making trips back to the village every few days to relish in Yanhua’s embarrassment.
"Whether she has children or not is secondary, but what happened after that? Did Yanhua like that family?" Grandma Sun couldn’t help asking.
"That’s why I say some people can’t change their nature, just like a dog can’t stop eating poop. The matchmaker mentioned it, and she didn’t object. She agreed to the marriage, swindled the man’s money, and ran off. Now, no one knows where she is. The man’s family nearly harassed her parents to death, they almost lost half their lives, her heart is just too cruel! Those are her own parents, after all!" Chun Mei said, clicking her tongue and shaking her head, feeling only pity for Yanhua’s elderly parents.
Casting a glance at Grandma Sun, who remained silent, Lan Tian curled her lips. Grandma Sun’s already scant familial affection for Yanhua had almost completely worn away.
Someone who could be so heartless to her own parents, not to mention others.
Lan Tian glanced towards the Medicine House, her uncle should have heard what Chun Mei said. Turning her gaze back, she saw Zhao Li’s figure turning away from the kitchen window.
"You must be tired from the long train ride with the child. The room is ready, you can go and get some rest first. I’ll call you for dinner."
Everyone was well aware of Yanhua’s situation. Lan Tian, losing interest in idle chatter, dismissed Chun Mei to let them rest.
"I’m not tired, I got some sleep on the train. Lan Tian, is Chunhua really working as a nurse in Shanghai?"
Lan Tian nodded, a flicker of deep light passing through her eyes, "Why do you ask? Are you planning to go see her?"
After all these years, Chun Mei had never shown any interest in Chunhua’s affairs, so her sudden mention was naturally cause for suspicion.
"She’s busy these days; you won’t be able to see her if you go now. Wait until she’s done with this busy period, there’s no rush in the next few days. You’re not staying for just a couple of days and leaving."
"That’s true, no rush, no rush." Chun Mei seemed not to catch the implication in Lan Tian’s words, looking around as she lifted her head. freeweɓnøvel~com
"Chun Mei, consider Fourth Grandmother’s place your own home, don’t stand on ceremony with her. You young folks chat, I’ll go start cooking. Girl, keep Chun Mei company," said Grandma Sun, not quite at ease leaving Lan Tian alone, making sure to give specific instructions.
After eating watermelon, the two nephews didn’t even bother to wipe their mouths, their lips red and hands damp, they wiped their hands on their clothes, then ran around the yard, poking here and touching there. They even meddled with the herbs drying on the wooden rack, really behaving in a way that was detestable.
"Kids, don’t touch that, it’s a medicinal herb, it will make your hands itch if you touch it," Lan Tian went over and stopped them. In just a blink of an eye, when she wasn’t watching, they had scattered herbs all over the ground, and the two children had stepped all over them, rendering them unusable.
Due to past-life reasons, Lan Tian had an exceptional tolerance for children, and patiently prepared to reason with the two kids. However, the kids did not have the patience for it.
Seeing Lan Tian head over, Chun Mei came over, grabbed a child, and smacked them, "Got itchy hands, huh? Touching everything; this isn’t your home. I bet you two can’t live without a beating for a day. Just sit still for me. If you bother me again, I don’t want you anymore. I’ll send you back to live with your dad. Now go." She dragged the two kids to sit down.
Lan Tian curled her lip. The words sounded so unpleasant. Could it be that the herbs grown in her own home could be tossed around at will? What sort of way was this to educate children? Lan Tian was baffled.
Well then, the children’s mother had come over, so Lan Tian didn’t meddle further to avoid being annoying.
With a shout from Chun Mei, the two kids quieted down and sat still. Chun Mei looked around, and the more she saw, the more amazed she became, with envy clearly visible in her eyes—something that Lan Tian noticed out of the corner of her eye.
"This house is so big, and the grounds so spacious. It’s much larger than the houses in your village. Your family must have made a fortune!" she said with a tart undertone.
Lan Tian gave Chun Mei a sidelong glance, her gaze laden with meaning, "It’s alright, the houses in the village are mostly like this." At most, there were a few more rooms, a slightly larger yard, and a bit more space for vegetable gardens. Nothing much else was different.
She finished speaking and glanced at Chun Mei to see her reaction.
Lan Tian’s nonchalant demeanor, as if nothing mattered, irked Chun Mei further. She pouted, "This house must have cost a lot of money. Fourth Grandmother has been so good to you. They say a married daughter is like water that’s been poured away, but Fourth Grandmother raised you, and even got a grandson in return. My third brother treats your family better than his own parents."
At first, Lan Tian didn’t understand, but upon seeing Chun Mei’s scornful expression, she suddenly got it. Could Chun Mei possibly think that this house and land were the result of Mo Junhua giving them the money? No wonder her words were so acidic; surely, she thought this money should not have gone to their family, implying that it should have gone to her own parents, perhaps with a share for herself as a sister.
Lan Tian snorted coldly, wishful thinking indeed, but then a thought struck her—could it be that Chun Mei had come to Shanghai with her eyes on this house?
After inspecting the front yard, standing at the entrance of the backyard, Chun Mei looked back and exclaimed, "So the back is a vegetable garden!" As she walked in, her eyes were met by an immense peach tree with thick branches and verdant peach leaves covering half of the yard, providing a particularly cooling shade. Oddly, there wasn’t a single peach on the tree.
"Just a barren peach tree that bears no fruit. What’s the use of keeping it? Better to chop it down for firewood. It takes up so much space, and you can’t plant vegetables—what a waste!" Chun Mei walked around, feeling that it was too wasteful. The tree took up a third of the space; it would have been more economical to plant vegetables instead.
As soon as Chun Mei finished speaking, a sudden windstorm arose, and the peach tree branches rustled sharply, like a host of demons dancing. Chun Mei, caught off guard, was knocked to the ground by the strong wind.
"Master, can I eat her?" Little Tao was furious. What kind of blind, foolish mortal dared to mock it—the Immortal Peach Tree—for being useless, and in front of its master no less? It was taking the peach tree way too lightly.
Back in the day, Taohua Valley was ever-spring with showers of flowers. The peach trees were always in full bloom—such stunning elegance! If it weren’t for the master’s instruction to not be too extraordinary in the mortal world, to avoid startling the mortals, it would have already shown off its blossoms. Did it need to keep hiding its talents?
"Stop messing around, Little Tao, she’s still holding kids in her arms." Lan Tian waved her hand lightly, and the wind suddenly dissipated, leaving only a gentle breeze blowing. Lan Tian walked up to Chun Mei and asked, "Are you okay?"
"I’m fine!" The over-frightened Chun Mei only came back to her senses when she saw Lan Tian’s outstretched hand and grasped it to stand up. She fell on her buttocks. Her body was fine, just a bit sore from hitting the ground. She rubbed her behind while looking around.
"This wind is so strange, isn’t it? It doesn’t seem windy outside at all. It’s like seeing a ghost!" Chun Mei murmured, and after saying that, she felt especially chilly under the tree. After staying a while, she shivered and, looking up at the peach tree, seemed to think of something. Suddenly trembling, she said, "There’s nothing to see in the back. Lan Tian, let’s hurry back to the front yard. I’m afraid those two little rascals will turn the place upside down if I’m not there." Without waiting for Lan Tian, she began to walk away, her pace quickening, and eventually she broke into a run. It was as if something terrifying was chasing her from behind.
