Chapter 88: Pet Contract Successfully

Some of the city’s residents came to Agares’s funeral—especially those who knew or had met him before. The ceremony didn’t last long. They all went home before sunset.

That afternoon, Agares was relaxing in the second-floor lounge with Aoi while waiting for Milenia to return.

As they waited, Agares opened his inventory menu and looked over his items. Aoi kept playing with a ball, bouncing around in excitement. They both waited patiently.

Not long after, Agares heard a familiar voice coming from downstairs. It was Milenia—she had returned with her people.

Agares stood up and called Aoi to come along. They walked down the stairs and saw Milenia arrive, her face covered in sweat. It must’ve been scorching hot outside.

"Agares," Milenia greeted.

"How did it go?" Agares asked.

"Everything’s fine. No one suspected it was your clone."

"Good."

Just as Agares was about to deactivate the skill, Milenia raised her hand to stop him.

If he deactivated the skill now, the dark form of the clone buried underground might fly out and draw unwanted attention.

"Better not now. Do it tonight," Milenia requested. Agares nodded.

"Did you see Silva and Leon’s reactions?" she asked.

Agares nodded again. It was hard to believe they were truly grieving his death, but he knew there wasn’t anything he could do. Leaving things as they were was the best option.

"The important thing is that those adventurers believe you’re dead. In two or three days, they’ll head back to the surface."

"I understand."

"So, what are you going to do now?" Milenia asked, standing there in a black dress, arms folded.

"My body is fully recovered now. I think it’s the perfect time to form the pet contract," Agares replied.

"YEAAYY! Let’s do the contract!" Aoi cheered, raising her arms.

Milenia and Agares smiled at Aoi’s excitement. Milenia raised her hand to shoulder height and scanned Agares using her magic.

She gave a short hum; his condition was more than ready.

"Wait for me in the backyard. I need to prepare something before we start the contract," Milenia said. Agares nodded.

He headed to the backyard first, while Milenia returned to her room to change clothes and grab her magical equipment.

Being a contract intermediary was simple for her—especially since all the required materials were already ready.

Not only that, the willingness of both master and pet was strong. Because of that, Milenia expected their compatibility to be even higher than usual.

When Agares arrived at the backyard, Aoi jumped off his shoulder and ran joyfully across the grass, leaping now and then to catch butterflies.

Agares watched her from afar, then called out to Nyx to confirm something.

"Nyx."

[Standby Mode Deactivated]

[Do you need something, Master?]

"Aoi is a rare fox race with S-tier potential. I want to know just how powerful she can become," Agares said.

[Each pet from different races has different potential strength. Some are based on race tier, others on growth and combat potential.]

[As a legendary Kitsune, Aoi has extremely high potential.]

[Once the pet contract is formed, Aoi will unlock a new leveling system. Pets gain EXP by fighting alongside their master.]

[The amount of EXP gained and required for leveling up varies by race.]

"What’s the power increase percentage when bringing a pet into battle?" Agares asked.

[Based on historical records for similar-tier pets, power increase can reach 20–25%. The increase will grow higher with each evolution the pet undergoes.]

"I see," Agares muttered.

"Exactly."

Milenia surprised Agares from behind, making him jump in shock.

She laughed softly at his reaction—it was clear he was taking this pet contract seriously.

"What your system says is right. The more a pet evolves, the stronger they become in battle."

"What’s evolution?" Agares asked.

"You’ll find out later."

"Let’s begin the contract."

"Aoi!" Milenia called out. Aoi quickly ran up to her.

Once the backyard was clear, Milenia threw four magical gems in each cardinal direction. Agares and Aoi waited at the edge, watching for instructions.

Milenia began chanting a spell softly—too quiet for Agares to hear clearly. She extended her staff forward, her eyes sharp and focused.

"Contract Altar Activated!"

Blue pillars of light rose from each gem. Magical runes formed as lines connected the gems. Agares and Aoi watched the scene in awe.

Magic, in this moment, looked terrifying... and beautiful.

Once the runes were fully formed, glowing bright blue, the altar was ready. Milenia lowered her staff and instructed Agares to release the items he had gathered into the runes.

Agares did as told. He tapped his magic pouch and levitated the Soulbound Crystal Core and Whispering Leaf of Shrine into the altar.

The items spun clockwise, then faded into energy absorbed by the gems. The rune’s glow shifted to yellow—indicating the contract was ready.

"Both of you... step into the rune."

Agares and Aoi both nodded and stepped in. At the center, their bodies floated. Milenia quickly explained that it wasn’t dangerous.

"Relax. Let the system handle the rest."

"Alright."

[1%... 30%...]

The system panel appeared in front of Agares and Aoi. Milenia narrowed her eyes, focusing on the percentage match between the two.

"What should we do?" Aoi asked, worried.

"Nothing. Let the system complete your pet contract," Milenia said.

Aoi nodded. Neither she nor Agares felt anything physical, but the system panel was still active—proof that the process wasn’t done.

[35%... 46%...]

"In my experience, the contract usually succeeds once your compatibility goes over 50%."

"What’s the highest compatibility you’ve seen?" Agares asked.

"I’m not sure... maybe 90%. And that was with a pet lower than S-tier."

"I told you already—S-tier pets are special."

"I’ll do my best," Agares said firmly.

[Matching subjects...]

[48%... 49%...]

Agares kept watching the percentage. Oddly, it stopped at 49%.

"What’s going on?"

"I don’t know," Milenia replied.

"I WANT TO BE WITH AGARES!" Aoi shouted, her voice loud and filled with raw emotion. A sudden surge of power burst from her body.

The energy shock stunned Agares. When he looked at the system panel again, the percentage was rising rapidly.

[Matching subjects...]

[49%... 70%...]

"What’s happening?"

The percentage kept climbing—finally reaching 85%. Milenia looked stunned. She had never seen a compatibility that high. It was extraordinary.

[DING! Congratulations, Agares! You have obtained a pet!]

Agares and Aoi gently floated back down onto the glowing rune. But when Agares turned to look, he saw Aoi lying limp on the ground—he rushed to her.

"Aoi."

He held her gently, checking on her. The contract was successful. They were now officially bonded as master and pet.

Milenia walked over, worried as well. She checked on Aoi and smiled.

"She’s okay. Just tired."

"Thank goodness."

"Congratulations, Agares. Now you and Aoi can adventure together and share EXP too."

"But remember—since you formed a pet contract, a portion of your earned EXP will now be split with Aoi."

"Your pet system will manage it automatically."

Agares carried the little fox in his arms, then looked over at Milenia.

Now that he had Aoi, there was still a lot he didn’t understand about pets.

Nyx could answer technically, but he needed real insight—so he turned to Milenia.

"I have a few questions about pets. Do you have time?"

"Of course. I’ll answer all of them."

Milenia put away her staff and pulled out a wine bottle. She showed it to Agares with a smirk. He smiled, knowing what she meant.

"Shall we talk about it over drinks?"

"Sure. I don’t mind."
