When Bai Yang opened his eyes it was already afternoon. The rare rays of sunshine streamed through window curtains and onto his body, making him feel warm and comfy.
Bai Yang sat up and found he was in an unfamiliar room. It was huge, resembling a grand hall more than a bedroom. The bed was exquisitely decorated, with the sun, moon and stars delicately carved into its frame and a canopy made of luxurious black gold muslin. The floor was made of crystals used specifically in the main manor of the Palace of Eternal Darkness. Through it, he could faintly feel the shifting currents of demonic magic.
All signs pointed to him being in the Demon King’s imperial sleeping palace.
Bai Yang scrambled off the bed. Fuck, I could have slept anywhere except for the Almighty Demon King’s bed! If someone found out, rumors will start popping up saying I want to usurp the throne!
But why am I sleeping in the Almighty Demon King’s bed?
Wasn’t I just fighting with the Almighty Demon King?
Uh….
It seems like I finally won at the end?
Dazed, Bai Yang stood there, barefoot.
The cold crystal exuded small traces of magic that traveled up from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. Bai Yang took in a breath.
“Why aren’t you wearing any shoes?” The Demon King’s cool voice echoed beside him.
Bai Yang turned his head and saw the Demon King, clad in all black, walk out from behind a four paneled changing screen, painted with the Demon World Mountains. The corners of his mouth were slightly raised, it seemed like he was in a good mood.
Why do I feel so miserable, even though I won? Why does he look completely fine despite losing?
Bai Yang felt depressed, but still made a sound of agreement, before rushing back to the bed to put on his shoes.
“Do you feel better?” The Demon King asked, his beautiful eyes glancing at Bai Yang’s face, before drifting away.
Bai Yang rubbed his eyes and sucked in a breath when he felt the painful swelling there.
When the Demon King saw Bai Yang’s pained expression, he coughed and said, “I was too excited this morning, and didn’t hold back enough.”
“This is nothing, just a flesh wound.” His meridians were still flowing, and he didn’t feel any aches in his body, so his wounds were surface-level.
“That’s good,” said the Demon King. “…Follow me, the people researching the Rebirth Gu have returned.”
The people researching the Rebirth Gu are back?
Bai Yang was shocked. He didn’t mind the Rebirth Gu that much, but the sooner this problem was solved the better. So, of course he was still kind of happy and quickly followed behind the Demon King towards the main hall.
On his way out of the bedroom, Bai Yang glanced at a decorative mirror on the other side of the room…
Fuck!
Whose pig face is that?!
Bai Yang screamed in horror as he cupped his face.
The Demon King, hearing the commotion behind him, turned around. He must have understood the situation from Bai Yang’s expression, because he said, shamefully, “They’re surface-level injuries. They’ll heal quickly.”
‘Heal quickly’ your goddamn head!
Bai Yang’s heart was dripping blood. I fought with you for your sake, yet you actually didn’t hold back and beat me until I looked like a pig head?
“It really was an accident. I was too excited to control my strength.” The Demon King’s voice lacked confidence.
Bai Yang held his face, twice its normal size, and complained, “Your Highness, don’t you know not to attack the face?”
The Demon King was silent for a moment, before bowing his head and admitting his mistake. “I’m sorry.”
Relying on the Demon Race’s strong healing factor, Bai Yang’s face would probably return to normal by the next day. However, Bai Yang had no way to fix it now.
He pointed at his face and said, “You clearly see my face, yet you didn’t even tell me. You’re taking me out to see other people like this?”
Demon King: “….” He almost forgot how highly Xie Ze Tian valued his reputation.
He thought for a moment, before awkwardly explaining, “Don’t worry. Even swollen, you have a handsome face.”
Bai Yang: “???”
This swollen, meat bun face can be considered handsome???
Bai Yang was so furious he thought was going to die. Grinding his teeth, he pushed down the dissatisfaction in his heart and said, “Is there a mask I can use?”
The Demon King, in order to make up for his mistake, hurriedly replied, “Yes,” and then, “Servant!”
The servant, who was waiting outside, walked in and respectfully bowed. “Your Highness.”
The Demon King waved his hand. “Go retrieve some masks.”
The Demon King spoke too fast and too naturally! The servant walked in too fast! Bai Yang didn’t have enough time to hide his pig-like face from the eyes of the two servants!
Bai Yang: “….”
Almighty Demon King, how does your brain even function?
Soon, the servant returned with a few masks. They all looked elegant and luxurious. They were even served on a tray.
Bai Yang picked the largest one and tried it on. His face was almost too swollen for the mask to fit. Fortunately, however, he managed to make it work and covered the entirety of his pig-like face.
After his struggle, Bai Yang followed the Demon King in the direction of the main hall.
Just as he walked away, he could hear the two servants whispering.
“Did you see him?”
“Yeah.”
“Was Lord Xie beat up by His Highness?”
“Probably.”
“His face… pft…”
“Laugh quieter!”
As the faint laughter resounded, Bai Yang found it hard to contain his sorrow.
The Demon King’s hearing was better than Bai Yang’s, so he heard it as well. With a slightly ugly expression, he pulled a nearby waiter over and ordered, “Punish the two attendants and tell them to leave. They’re forbidden from the main palace.”
The servant respectfully acknowledged his order.
Bai Yang remained silent. Realizing the atmosphere wasn’t quite right, the Almighty Demon King coughed. Since he didn’t usually comfort people, he didn’t know what to say, so he finally just gave up. “Let’s just go.”
The bedroom wasn’t far from the main hall, so they got there quickly.
As they walked in, they saw a tall black-clad man standing in the middle of the main hall. Bai Yang recognized him; he used to be one of the guards for the Demon King of Eternal Night before being transferred to the border. He was considered as a trusted aid of the Demon King, but he was relegated to looking for a cure, instead.
Bai Yang’s mood was complicated.
Xiao Ling secretly said in his mind: “Actually, Sir, getting together with the Demon King isn’t such a bad idea. Look at how well he treats you! Except for being a little narcissistic, the Almighty Demon King is pretty good all around.”
Bai Yang was speechless, “Xiao Ling, where are your morals? I don’t like men, so no matter how good he is to me, it’s not like I will start liking him back.”
“Do you actually not like men?”
“Yes.”
“How are you this sure?”
“…”
“You hesitated just now, right?”
“I didn’t.”
“You hesitated, you did.”
“I didn’t.”
“You did.”
The two argued for a while before Bai Yang said, “I did an experiment, and found I don’t have any interest in men. It’s not like you don’t know.”
He was referring to when he invited five concubines to his room back at his mansion.
Xiao Ling replied: “They’re them, and the Demon King is the Demon King. Besides, just because you don’t like him now doesn’t mean you’ll never like him. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll grow to like him back.”
Bai Yang was speechless. “Let’s be clear, even if I promise to be with him, imagine if one day he finds out I’ve been lying to him. Guess what his reaction will be?”
Xiao Ling pondered for a moment, before saying: “Then you should properly refuse him.”
If the Demon King found out Bai Yang was raising a wild man on the outside, even getting seriously injured for him, and that all of his actions were to help that him, the Demon King would…
Xiao Ling firmly said: “Reject him.”
Bai Yang was a little worried. He’d been rejecting him all along, but the Almighty Demon King was still being so good to him.
Furthermore, did he really not like the Demon King?
He didn’t dare think about it too deeply.
“You send a letter saying you found a way to cure gu?” The Demon King asked the man before him.
The man glanced at Bai Yang, probably a little curious, but he stored that curiosity away and replied, “Yes, Your Highness. I traveled to the border to find the origins of the gu worm. There’s a legend passed down near the border, saying that the gu worms came from FireThorn City.”
The Demon King frowned. “FireThorn City?”
Bai Yang thought, FireThorn City? That mysterious city that can’t be reached?
The man continued: “This subordinate has visited FireThorn City many times, but was never allowed entry. Having remembered that Your Highness had received the FireThorn envoy before, this subordinate rushed back to report to Your Grace.”
The Demon King pondered for a moment, before saying, “You may go.”
“Yes, then this subordinate will retire now.” The man stepped back, taking one last glance at Bai Yang, and left. He was probably wondering what Bai Yang was doing there.
The Demon King of Eternal Night had suddenly mobilized everyone to find a cure to the Rebirth Gu. Everyone was wondering if the Demon King had contracted the gu, but so far, no one dared to ask.
As soon as that man left, the Demon King said to Bai Yang, “We’re leaving for FireThorn City immediately.”
Going to FireThorn City?
Bai Yang thought for a while. There was no reason not to go. Of course, resolving the gu problem would be good, but that meant he would owe the Demon King yet another favor. If he showed his unwillingness, the Demon King would be unhappy and, with his domineering personality, might force Bai Yang to go anyway.
Done weighing his options, Bai Yang replied, “Alright.”
Seeing his obedient agreement, the Demon King was very satisfied. His gaze softened, full of gentleness.
The next day, Bai Yang’s injuries were completely healed (mainly his face was no longer swollen), so the two set off to FireThorn City. The Demon King and Xie Ze Tian both had high cultivations, so, even though FireThorn City was quite a distance away, it didn’t take them long to reach it.
Very few people knew the location of FireThorn City and even if you did, entering was difficult. They could only look at it from afar. He didn’t know how the Demon King did it, but he got both the location of the city and was even able to contact the people inside.
With the Demon King leading them, they were able to reach FireThorn city in three days and nights.
FireThorn City resided on flat lands in mountain ranges. The entire mountain was surrounded by a thick black magic barrier and the material used to build the city, while no one really knew what it was, made it look pitch black. The city stood by itself in the mountains.
Combined with the dark mountains, the black city blended in and made it hard to find. However, FireThorn City was surrounded by burning molten lava that spread across the lands in web-like crevices that separate it from the mountains.
Legend had it that someone once saw FireThorn City and wanted to reach it. Yet, no matter how much that person walked or how close the city looked, he could not get any closer. Bai Yang thought it sounded like the desert mirages he’d once seen.
They stopped on a black mountain not far away and the Demon King took out a feather. It was a brilliant red and shined with a faint light. The Demon King blew on it, and the feather flew into the air, before disappearing into a stream of light.
After a moment, Bai Yang saw the closed gates of FireThorn City open.
A red-figure came out of the massive doors and then, with increasing speed, he stepped over the bubbling lava, rushed past the roaring flames and arrived in front of them.
As he got closer, Bai Yang noticed that it was a handsome man with curly hair. With deep red eyes, a high nose bridge and deep eyes, he almost looked European…. Maybe he was European?
