The Eldest Daughter of a Rural Family-Chapter 665: Another Year of Spring Exams (1)_1
Chapter 665: Chapter 665: Another Year of Spring Exams (1)_1
Yang Boyan received the box and, seeing that it contained all the items he had given to Pei Qian, was instantly stunned. "What does this mean?"
Two guards took out a letter written by Pei Qian and handed it to him. "Young Master Yang, congratulations on your wedding!" they said. Then, they put down the items and left.
Yang Boyan rapidly unfurled the letter. With every line he read, his complexion grew paler and his expression uglier.
Bai Jinyan came over and looked at the contents of the box. There was the Colored Glaze Flower Lantern, which he had gone to great lengths to win for Pei Qian. The piece of coral, which he had ground down into the shape of Little Chili to also give to Pei Qian. What’s worse, he had also sent the Family Heirloom Jade Pendant away long ago.
Bai Jinyan, with her hair already done up in the style of a married woman, became even more stern and severe when angered.
The servants and maids all kept as silent as cicadas in winter, not even daring to breathe loudly.
Yet, Yang Boyan refused to believe what was written in Pei Qian’s letter. She clearly liked him, so why would she say she loathed and resented him? Was it really just because he hadn’t told her in time about his marriage to his cousin? Or was it because he hadn’t cleanly broken things off with his cousin?
What was the meaning of writing this? Telling him not to look for her, to give up on her?
After Bai Jinyan took the letter and read it from beginning to end, her face turned an icy shade of blue. Rejected for marriage, yet she had been allowed to enter the house first as a concubine. How wonderful! She had been waiting to deal with her after she entered the household, but Pei Qian had outwitted her first!
Yang Boyan was completely dejected, drained of spirit and vigor. At first, he thought she was interesting and teased her. He had even thought that taking her home, even if he married his cousin, would not make life dull, for her temperament was sure to engage in a battle of wits with his cousin, and he would stand by her side and support her. But later, he realized he was truly moved and genuinely wanted to marry her, through a proper and respectable match. She also liked him, but now she had given him this.
"Regret it?" Pei Qin rolled up her sleeves to cook, instructing the little Radishes at home to make braised pork.
"I don’t regret it!" Pei Qian said without lifting her head, continuing to work on the vegetables in her hands, slicing some into threads and others into pieces.
In the days that followed, she cooked every day, her knife skills nearly matching Pei Qin’s.
"Good, you don’t regret it! That’s how a Radish taught by me should be—clean and decisive! Whether it’s good or bad, as long as it’s the life you’ve chosen, then live it comfortably!" Pei Qin nodded. She still needed time to settle her feelings and forget. Through this ordeal, she had also matured.
Pei Qian looked up at her and suddenly shouted, "The pot!" Saying so, she rushed over, pushed her aside, and quickly lifted the lid of the clay pot. "Look at you! Not cooking, but not even watching the pot properly! The soup is boiling over!"
"I’m not an octopus!" Pei Qin shouted back in anger. Didn’t she see her frying dishes while watching the pot, with a little Radish clinging to her thigh!
Wrapped up like a little red dumpling, Jiujiu held onto her mother’s leg with both hands and stood on a stool, peeking over the edge of the cooking platform. In her tender voice, she said, "Mommy! Try this!"
"You’re spoiling her!" Pei Qin didn’t let her taste.
Other than cooking and sewing, Pei Qian had taken to caring for Jiujiu. She moved a stool for her to stand on, and while a wet nurse looked on, Pei Qian would cook and let Jiujiu have a taste. In just a few days, the little one learned to ask for a taste whenever she saw cooking happening.
"What have I spoiled! Tasting the food for its seasoning is part of cooking!" Pei Qian complained. "You’re too busy to take care of your own daughter, so I help you, and you still complain!?"
"She’s all yours!" Pei Qin gestured dismissively.
Pei Qian glared. "Giving her to me then give her to me! Even if she’s still nursing, I can raise her to adulthood!" Turning to Jiujiu, she said, "Jiujiu! From now on, you’re with your auntie! You don’t need your mommy anymore!"
"I want mommy!" Jiujiu protested, clinging tightly to Pei Qin’s skirt.
