Chapter 272: Small Price

Shikera wanted to stop Ethan from suppressing Alan with his intimidating gaze, but she stopped herself when she noticed the two weren’t conversing like strangers. Even Ethan didn’t look as offended as she thought he would at seeing her completely ignore him and talk to a strange man. As expected, he was a man not affected by jealousy. He was only trying to show his superiority... right?

But why were the two still talking like they had an idea who each other was? Shikera looked from one man to the other, and it dawned on her where they met each other. The hospital!

A frown formed on Shikera’s face as she began to connect the dots. For Ethan not to be surprised at seeing Alan, it could only mean that he had expected to see him here on the island. And that in turn could only mean...

It suddenly occured to Shikera at that moment as she glanced up at Ethan,

"Was it Mignon who told you i was here?"

Ethan turned to look at her, his eyes betraying his emotions. He only had to blink twice before Shikera knew the answer to her question.

"Let’s get out of here, Ethan. We’ll see you later, Alan," she said, rising to her feet while pulling Ethan’s hand with her.

"Where are we going?" he asked without attempting to withdraw his hand. He would go anywhere...as long as it was with her.

"Back home. We need to talk," Shikera answered. They had gotten to the door and were about to step out when Ethan suddenly stopped.

"I’ll join you in a while. I have to get something," he stated. Reluctantly retracting his hand from hers, he walked back into the store and searched the shelf, picking some items and throwing them into a small basket which he had picked up from the entrance.

Shikera waited impatiently for the next few minutes that he spent in the store and grabbed his free hand the moment he walked out with a plastic bag in one hand. She didn’t let his hand go until they got back home, where she murmured a bit about where Grandma Cooper was while fiddling through her pocket for the key.

"I’ll drop this in the kitchen," Ethan informed, disappearing into the kitchen in a second. Shikera didn’t bother asking about what he bought, as she believed the discussion they were about to have was more important that whatever it was that he could have bought at the store.

When Ethan got back to the living room, Shikera was sitting comfortably on the couch with her hands clasped over her knees. She looked up when she heard his footsteps approach and with a blank face, gestured to him to sit beside her. Ethan obeyed.

"So what’s this about? You grew serious all of a sudden. Did I do something wrong?" he asked.

"We will see about that. Ethan, why did Mignon tell you where I am? I know her, and I trust that she couldn’t have told you if you didn’t...You didn’t threaten her, right?" she asked.

Ethan stayed silent for the next few seconds and simply stared at Shikera as she did the same, making her uncomfortable when he persisted.

"Ethan, what are you doing?" she asked carefully, frowning.

"Looking at you," Ethan deadpanned. "You didn’t know I missed you, right Kera?"

Shikera shook her head.

"That’s not what we are talking about here, Ethan. Do not try to evade my question. Did you threaten Mignon or coerce her into telling you where I am?"

"I didn’t. I tried to but she didn’t budge. Even when she knew I already discovered that you two were together all through last week, she still refused to talk. I offered to help her regain her memories through Kyle but she refused and even I could tell at that moment, that she was very reluctant to lose that opportunity."

"Then tell me what you did to her to make her tell you. What if you actually took the answer from her by drilling her? You are wise, and I know you are more than capable of doing—"

"I begged her," Ethan interrupted. His voice was low as if he was more than reluctant to tell her what he had just said.

"Pardon?" Shikera raised her brows, "You did what? Look Ethan, it’s totally alright if you got the information by granting Mignon a wish of hers. Afterall, you are a business man and I know you’ll never partake in a losing game but do not lie to me. I...I was also happy to see you so trust me, I won’t be angry."

"I pleaded with her, Shikera. I knelt down to someone for the second time, because of you. It’s...I know it’s not much of a sacrifice to you but I’ll have you know that..."

Shikera completed his sentence, "That you never had a reason to plead with anyone since you were born? Then remember you said just now that it’s your second time, who did you kneel for the first time?"

Silence fell in the living room. Of all the questions that Ethan had expected from Shikera, she just had to ask one that excessively expressed her jealousy. And the both of them noticed that at the same time.

"I’m just asking cause I’m curious and not because of anything else that you might be thinking. In fact, you don’t need to answer. I don’t think I want to know," she hurriedly said.

Ethan nodded, "Yeah, I’m sure you don’t need to know."

Even though Shikera was aggrieved at that bland reply, she tried hard not to show it.

"Then uhm..back to what we were saying. You only had to kneel and plead with her before she talked?" she switched topics.

"Right," Ethan confirmed, standing from the couch. "It’s such a small price to pay in return for seeing you, right?" He smiled, about to walk away when Shikera pulled him back.

"Who told you it’s a small price?"
