He nodded to himself and looked up, his gaze softening.

"Marry me, Shikera....Again."

And there was silence. Shikera stared at him. She could do nothing but stare, so she did that diligently. Never in her life had she imagined those words proceeding out of Ethan’s mouth.

Sure, she had imagined them having a future together at one time or the other, but she had never even in her wildest dreams, seen Ethan asking her to marry him.

"Shikera?" Ethan called.

Shikera wanted to answer him, but her tongue seemed to have disappeared as she was finding it hard to even say a word.

"You are quiet. Is it that this is shocking or...?" Ethan asked. He looked around and as if just realizing where he had gone wrong, let out pent up breath. "It’s because this is not the ideal proposal you expected, right?"

"No," Shikera finally found her voice.

"No? No what?"

"No...I won’t marry you," Shikera asked, her voice as low as a whisper.

Now it was Ethan’s turn to be tongue tied. He ran his hands through his hair, his eyes betraying his confusion.

"Why?" he asked simply.

"Because I don’t want to? It’s—i can’t explain. Just take my answer for what it is," Shikera managed to answer. She just said whatever came to her mind without bothering to check if it made sense or not.

And it surely didn’t, to Ethan’s ears.

"Shikera, you do know this is highly illogical and absurd and—i don’t know but... Shit! If this is a joke, I’ll tell you it’s really not funny. I’m being—"

Shikera interrupted him, "You’re being serious? I am too, Ethan. I wouldn’t joke with something like this. And yes, I know my answer does not make any sense but—"

"But you still chose to say it? Just tell me why you said no and I promise to do everything it takes for you to change your answer."

Shikera sighed, "This is personal. We...i am only trying to make things right here. Our marriage wasn’t meant to be long lasting and is supposed to end after a year, just 4 months to now. I’m only quickening the pace."

"Exactly," Ethan replied, his voice losing its usual gentle tone which he used whenever he was with her. "I just want to know the fucking reasons why you are quickening the pace! What happened, Shikera? It wasn’t like this before, right? One glance at you and I used to be able to tell what was on your mind but all those are changed now. What exactly is the matter?"

Shikera replied with equal intensity, "Everything changes! You change, I change, and everyone else also have the right to change. And by the way, Ethan, you can’t force me to marry you when I don’t want to, no matter my reason for saying no. We aren’t compatible—"

"What the fuck are you saying? We were living peacefully, Shikera. Or course there has been some anomalies here and there but all of the damn shits has been rectified now! You left because you didn’t want to cause harm to your loved ones but now that everything is settled, you are hesitating to return. And now you say we aren’t compatible. That’s the best shit I’ve ever heard in the 31 years I’ve lived," he scoffed.

"No cursing, Ethan! We can’t continue this conversation in the same room if you want to keep on cursing! And yes, I said we aren’t compatible. Just look at this, you...you said you don’t want babies while I want all the babies I can ever have; I want a husband who can share the same goals that I have without getting jealous like a kid and wanting to stop his wife from getting pregnant because he fears she will divert her attention from him!"

Shikera paused to catch her breath. She saw the rage in Ethan’s eyes growing and growing until it felt like he would explode the very next moment. But he didn’t.

She looked down to see his hands balled into tight fists and back up to see his firm chin. It was obvious that he was gritting his teeth to stop himself from acting out of anger, but that was what Shikera wanted. For him to act out of anger and probably storm out of the room or something. She just needed him to vent to her, but he obviously didn’t want to do that so she employed her last card.

Her aim was to make him angry after all.

"And that’s not the only reason we aren’t compatible, Ethan. You are a man who dislikes the world out there and hides behind a mask, but I’m the direct opposite! You might not show it anymore but I know that deep down, you still hate reporters and won’t ever consider showing your face to the world. We are just so different! I need a man who can..." she trailed off, running through appropriate words in her mind that could represent what she wanted to say. She only needed to say it in a way that Ethan would never consider.

"Yeah," she continued, "I need a husband who isn’t scared of the camera; one who doesn’t hesitate to take pictures with me and let me flaunt him on social media. You aren’t capable of being all that, Ethan, so let’s just rest it at that. When are you returning to the city?" she asked.

Shikera hundred percent expected Ethan to storm out of the room right there and then or if he didn’t do that, she expected him to flare up and tell her how undeserving she was of him too. After all, it was the truth. She didn’t deserve him in any way.

But none of her expectations was fulfilled. Instead, Ethan leaned over and pulled her into his arms, her soft breasts pressing through her shirt against his hard chest.

"I’m sorry, Honey." His hand tightened around her body, "I’m so sorry."
