The Faceless Billionaire Celebrity Wife-Chapter 304: Who Is Pregnant?
Music Rec: Love Is Gone by Slander ft Dylan Matthew.
Ethan’s eyes ran along the lines of text on the sheet of paper in his hand, his gaze darkening as he turned the page. It took him barely more than a minute to read and understand the contents of the contract he was holding.
"The fuck was that?" he scoffed in disbelief at what he just read. How could that be possible? The chairmans of two unrivalled corporations betting their futures on their children’s marriage?! But that was still alright. He was only getting disturbed by the reason behind the main clause of this particular contract, and he hoped it wasn’t true.
That could not be the reason why the contract had restricted him from touching her, right? It had to be a lie. All those lines that stated what would become of her if she got pregnant had to be fake. She wouldn’t wish for a baby so much if she knew she would have to endure pain and near death experiences, and not only that, she would have just until the end of her pregnancy to live. What he just read had to be someone’s idea of a joke.
He stormed out of the door, retrieving his phone from his pocket where he pressed a string of numbers to place a call.
"Ethan DeLoach?" A surprised voice came through after the very first ring.
"Is it true?" Ethan asked, in no mood to exchange pleasantries.
"Is what true?" The voice returned, a bit unsure this time around.
Ethan cut in, "If she happens to get pregnant...what would become of her?"
"Look, Eth—"
"You are her doctor so there’s no way you do not know about this! Tell me, Doctor Alexander," he demanded impatiently.
The line fell quiet and Ethan stopped dead in his tracks, straining his ears for an answer. He needed Krystal to reply him negatively and not to confirm what he just read but she seemed to be taking her time in doing so.
"No matter how absurd this might sound, Ethan, I need you to believe me and stay calm," she finally spoke.
Ethan didn’t breathe a word as he balled his hands into tight fists to hide his impatience, waiting for her to speak.
"It’s common knowledge that she has five years left to live, but uncommon that those five can be shortened to one if she happens to get pregnant. What would happen if the nutrients and internal systems that are barely sustaining her take on the job of sustaining an extra little one? I know you can guess the answer to that. So whatever you heard or wherever you found out about it, it’s true."
Ethan felt as if a bombshell had been dropped on him, losing his grip on his phone. He was only able to catch the device before it got to the ground due to his quick reflex.
"Is there a way out for her? It can be eating healthier meals, getting more intensive treatment or whatever. Just tell me if there’s a way out..." he asked.
"This isn’t for a doctor to say but from what I’ve studied and discovered, there is not. Actually, surviving the normal 9 months of pregnancy will be more than enough to ask," Krystal replied.
He disconnected the call and chuckled mirthlessly, raking his hand through his already disheveled hair. He had no idea what to feel. Should he be happy that he found this early enough when Shikera was yet to get pregnant and they could avoid all these problems, or should he be angry that this had been kept away from him?
He continued on his way out of the building while fishing for his car key, this time around with no intention to stop halfway. He ignored Mignon greeting him goodbye, heading out of the house and down the short flight of steps leading away from the patio.
Suddenly, his legs refused to move and stayed rooted to one spot. He felt...suffocated. Sweeping his gaze around, it didn’t take him more than a minute to find out the reason. He was without his mask and the mansion grounds had workers working in every nook and cranny.
The area had been empty when he came in earlier so he could guess none of them was aware of his presence.
He forced himself to take a step forward, and another, before finally resuming his long strides down to the garage. He swore that nothing would make him stop; be if the workers spotting him, or even the flash of a camera. But he stopped when he heard it.
"Si—Sir Ethan! W— I-I never thought I would have the opportunity to see your bare face again!"
He stopped to spare a glance at the person who just spoke, a middle aged woman whom he remembered to have been in charge of taking care of Mignon while he was young. Beside her was an older one who had been in charge of him.
"Y—you are back?" the latter stammered, her hands cupped over her mouth while her eyes were widened in shock.
He gave a curt nod, not wanting to ignore the women completely, and made to leave when the older one pulled him back, her calloused hand grazing against his skin. Frowning in annoyance, he was about to pull his hand back when...
"Congratulations, Sir Ethan. I knew you wouldn’t be like that forever. Your children wouldn’t want to have a father in mask, would they?" she chuckled nervously.
"What—"
The other woman, the one who had been in charge of Mignon interrupted him, "Ah yes...I forgot about that. Congratulations. You have a beautiful wife and you are also handsome so definitely, the baby will definitely be beautiful!"
For the first time since he was born, Ethan could not find his voice while talking to people he barely looked at. He could only watch and listen to their conversation as they talked.
"Beautiful? I’m sure it’s a boy, so the child will definitely be handsome!" the other one argued.
"Are you trying to trick me into a bet? Sir Ethan’s wife looked about three months gone, why don’t we request to accompany her to the hospital to check the baby’s gender?"
"You are such an idiot. Who told you it’s possible to check a baby’s gender this early into the pregnancy? And how do you know she’s three months gone?!"
"Oh my...you might see me as an idiot. But do not doubt my guesses as long as it’s about how many months a woman is pregnant for? In that aspect, I was a born genius!"
"Born genius my fo—"
All of a sudden, Ethan erupted into uncontrollable giggles which quickly escalated into an infectious laughter, attracting the attention of the workers around the area. Recovering from their shock, they joined him in laughing even though they had no idea why.
It continued for a few seconds until he stopped suddenly, the same way he started.
"Now enough with the jokes. Who is pregnant? My mom or my sister?"
