Chapter 317: 72 Hours (2) The confession.

"Shikera!"

Ethan whipped his head around, hearing his wif—or better put— woman’s name being called by a masculine voice. He only relaxed when he saw the person calling out to them was his own brother. Divorced or not, Enoch wouldn’t dare take his own woman from him.

"Why are they here?" he turned back to Shikera, asking with a much relaxed tone.

"Because I invited them," she replied, rolling her eyes. "Ethan you do realize you are asking more questions tonight than you normally would, right?"

"Sorry," he apologized, if that could be called an apology as his voice showed no hint of remorse.

Shikera teased, "It’s alright, I like it but I don’t want to think you’re suddenly developing interest in your ex wife whom you divorced just a few hours ago." She waited for his comeback and when he did reply, it wasn’t what she expected.

"You don’t need to think. Know that whether she’s my ex-wife or not, my interest will always lie in her. And if you must know, I’m beginning to regret signing those divorce papers." As soon as he was done speaking, he let her hand go and stepped forward to approach the group Enoch was waving them from.

There were no strangers sitting at their table. Enoch, Ruthlyn, Raymond, Cyprian and Mignon. Cole tagged along too, and that was the only odd person Ethan found in the group. Not because he was a stranger, but because the man wouldn’t have accepted the invitation to come to a place like this on a normal day.

"Came here to see me?" Ethan guessed, settling into the empty seat which he knew was meant for him and Shikera.

"No, he didn’t. He came with me and on my invite," Mignon butted in, eyeing her brother. "I heard what happened."

Before Ethan could ask what she heard, she leapt up from her seat to hug a figure that had just appeared behind him.

"My God, Kera. You alright?" he heard his sister ask.

"Of course, I am. I wouldn’t be here otherwise," Shikera replied. She added after a short pause, "I am single...again."

Her words cast a shadow against the group, all of their gazes settling on Ethan, except Mignon’s. They expected him to counter her words, maybe say something on the line of she was tied to him forever, but no words came out his mouth.

"We are divorced," Shikera supplied, earning their worried glances. "It’s alright. I deserve it."

Neither with their mouth, nor with their eyes did any of them ask any more questions. Instead, Cyprian changed the topic immediately after a signal from Shikera, saying the only word that came to her mouth.

"Baby bump!"

"What’s that?" Raymond nudged her, brows raised in confusion.

"Shikera’s baby bump, it’s visible now."

"Yh, that’s true."

"How many months old does the baby start kicking?"

"Shikera, did you check the gender yet?"

"When will..."

Ethan forced himself to zone out of the ongoing conversation, stirring his mind to think instead of how he would live with her absence when the 72 hours was up. As much as he wanted to turn around and see how visible the baby bump was, he restrained himself. He could not show any interest in the baby or Shikera would be overjoyed, and think she really was making the best sacrifice to show her love. But fuck! He hated how other people were fawning over a baby he hadn’t even gotten the chance to speak to yet.

Suddenly feeling the warmth of a body pressing against him, he jolted and looked up to see it was Shikera settling in beside him.

"Are you comfortable there, Shikera? Do you want to change seats?" he heard Mignon ask, and it was all he could do not to shut her up by saying Shikera was still his woman. He could lay claim to her for the next 72 hours too and no one, even if they were his sister, had the right to ask her to change seats.

Did she know weeks had passed since they were in such close proximity, even though they lived in the same home?

The thoughts running through Ethan’s head ceased all of a sudden, before completely dissipating to the replaced by excitement...Maybe. It wasn’t happiness, right? Such a small thing like this could not make him happy.

His gaze trailed down to the source of his excitement; his palm placed against Shikera’s belly. Just a second ago, she had lifted his hand and placed it on her belly, shocking him. No one could see them since more than half of their bodies were obscured below the table.

"It’s alright, Leah. I am more comfortable here," he heard her soft voice beside him. Within seconds, she had leaned in to whisper in his ears, "Can you feel the baby bump? The others say it but I won’t believe until it comes from you...By the way, I’m not fat, right?"

Ethan turned to meet her sincerely curious gaze, his eyes flickering with entirely different emotions.

"You look so sexy right now," he whispered. That was not the answer to her questions, but he just needed to say that. To get it out of his mind even though he would not be able to act on it.

He averted his gaze from her face and leaned back in his seat, even though he didn’t move the hand placed on her belly, to see the others staring at the both of them.

"Any problem?" he raised his brow.

Cole was the only one brave enough to ask, "You sure you are divorced? It doesn’t look like—"

"None of your business," Ethan interrupted him, before he could conclude his words. But inwardly, he knew Cole was right. It doesn’t look like he and Shikera were divorced because he still loved her and she? He wasn’t sure.

He leaned forward to pick up the glass of whisky Enoch had poured for him when they came in, and bringing it to his lips, he downed it in one go.

Just then, he thought he felt lips against his ear and a whisper, "I love you, Mr DeLoach."
