Chapter 347: Darry Ring

Music Rec: Rewrite the stars— James Arthur and Lorraine Smith.

As they neared the end of the show, Shikera prepared to wrap things up, glancing at the cue cards in front of her. But just as she was about to conclude, Ethan shifted in his seat, his voice suddenly cutting through the soft hum of the studio.

"I have something to say," he began, his voice steady but carrying a note of unease that only Shikera seemed to notice.

She turned to him, caught off guard by the intensity in his gaze. The restless look was back, the one she had seen earlier, and for a fleeting moment, she could have sworn she saw something like fear behind his eyes. Her instincts kicked in, and beneath the table, she started to reach for his hand, ready to offer comfort.

But before she could, Ethan lifted his hand and, in a move that took her by complete surprise, placed it over hers on the table, above the table, where everyone could see.

A wave of shock rippled through the studio. Gasps could be heard from the audience, and Shikera noticed the flicker of confusion and curiosity on the faces of those in the crowd. Her eyes darted to the screen in front of her, where the comments section had exploded in real time. Messages flooded in, questioning, speculating, reacting to the unexpected display of intimacy.

Shikera’s brows shot up in surprise, her heart racing. This wasn’t in the script. Her hand, now held by Ethan’s in full view, felt warmer than she had expected. She quickly glanced at him, her mind racing with questions. What was he doing? This wasn’t planned. This wasn’t part of their careful arrangement.

Ethan, seemingly oblivious to the shock around him, leaned slightly toward her, his voice low but clear enough for the audience to hear. "You’ve entertained everyone’s questions tonight, Shikera," he said, his tone serious. "Will you entertain one more? My question?"

Shikera’s pulse quickened as she stared at him, unsure of what to expect. She glanced around at the stunned faces in the room before nodding cautiously. "Go ahead," she replied, her voice steady despite the growing suspicion in her chest.

Ethan held her gaze for a moment longer, his grip on her hand tightening slightly as he prepared to speak.

"If you had someone who once detested you for something you didn’t do, once pushed you away and wasted the precious time he had with you when he should have been cherishing it, but now can’t imagine his life without you... would you give him another chance?" His hand slipped into his coat pocket and pulled out the small velvet box. The room seemed to freeze as he opened it, revealing a diamond ring that sparkled under the studio lights. He slid off his chair, lowering himself onto one knee before her.

"Will you marry me, Eleanor?"

Shikera’s eyes zeroed in on the ring, her heart beating faster and faster as the seconds ticked by. Excited screams and choruses echoed around her but she could only make out what a few people were saying,

"That’s a Darry ring, isn’t it?"

"Oh my gosh, it is!"

"He got a Darry ring for her and is presenting it while the whole world is watching? Isn’t that the perfect way to tell every other women they don’t stand a chance with him?!"

Shikera tuned the voices out, her lips curving into a bright smile as she stretched her hand to him.

"Yes, Vincent, I will marry you." Her eyes twinkling at the smile that bloomed on his face, she watched as he slid the ring onto her finger and pulled him up into a warm embrace. "I love you, Honey," she whispered against his ears.

"I love you more, Princess," Ethan whispered back, pressing a soft kiss to her nape.

"I can’t even argue with that," Shikera laughed, in between sniffles and joyful tears that were starting to slide down her cheek.

When they finally separated amidst an applause from the crowd, Ethan turned in the direction of the teenage girl who had the seat number 001.

"Rita, to answer your question, I am engaged," he said, in answer to the question she’d asked less than an hour ago.

While a lot of people blushed and screamed and ululated in excitement, a reporter sitting at the back seats yelled out loud, "Mr DeLoach, do you not think you are stealing the spotlight from Show Anchor Anderson by proposing to her here on her day when she’s supposed to be receiving congratulations for bringing one of the most wanted personalities onto the show?"

A resounding silence swept through the crowd and it seemed like everyone was waiting for Ethan’s answer. Shikera instead, took a step forward and adjusted the mic to her lips.

"Not like we are obligated to answer that question but then, I thought we should. No one steals what’s theirs in the first place, do they? Elovien’s Spotlight, Eleanor and Vincent’s spotlight, we might as well be anchoring the show together, don’t you think?"

She paused, looking straight into the camera that she knew her father was probably watching at home.

"This might be my last time on the show, and a new anchor will be brought in. Initially, this show was supposed to be created in honor of my mother, Natalia Anderson, but somewhere along the line, I realized I really do like this. What more? If my mum were here, she wouldn’t want me to keep on doing things I don’t want all in the name of honoring her memory, neither would she want me to dedicate things to her when the people who helped me achieve it are right by my side. I hope to always bear this day in mind as a wonderful memory."

A round of applause echoed in the studio one more time. Shikera turned to Maxwell, sending him a sharp signal with her eyes as she walked off the podium with her hands encased in Ethan’s.

The bright smile sat on her lips as she led him out the studio and into the small office they’d talked before the show started. And then it fell off.

She clicked the door shut and turned to Ethan, raising the hand where her engagement ring now sat. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

"What is this, Ethan?"
