The Fake Heiress Turns Out to Be a True Tycoon!-Chapter 413 He Seems to Have Started Growing a Brain
Chapter 413: Chapter 413 He Seems to Have Started Growing a Brain
When Chase Jennings regained consciousness, he felt a sharp pain at the back of his head. Groggily opening his eyes, he found himself lying on the ground. Beside him, a girl wearing a mask was crouched nervously, looking down at him.
"Are you okay?"
Chase opened his mouth, "Who are you?"
"I was passing by and saw you lying here. Your head’s bleeding."
The girl spoke quietly, her voice hoarse enough that if you didn’t listen closely, you might not even realize it was a girl speaking. She added,
"I’ve already called 911. The ambulance will be here soon."
Chase was still trying to recall the events that led to his fainting, and suddenly, as if remembering something, he abruptly lifted his head to look toward the car.
The car was still there, but the door was open—and Azura Loomis was nowhere to be found.
His eyes widened in shock, and he tried to get up despite the sharp pain from his head injury. The girl hurriedly pressed him back down.
"Don’t move around just yet."
"What about the person in my car... Where is Azura Loomis? Where is she?" Chase refused to settle down, his expression on the brink of collapse.
And his dignity?!
The girl replied, "Who? When I got here, the car door was already open, but there wasn’t anyone else around."
She hesitated before asking tentatively, "Were you... mugged?"
Upon hearing there was no one else, Chase immediately felt a wave of powerlessness.
He’d finally managed to pull off something big...
So how could someone have just run off?
An accomplice! Azura Loomis must’ve had accomplices!
Chase felt a surge of regret but didn’t let it stop him from thanking the girl in front of him.
"Thank you. What’s your name?"
The girl seemed to hesitate for a moment, just about to reply when she spotted the ambulance approaching at the street corner. She quickly said,
"The ambulance is here!"
She then waved forcefully toward it.
Chase was soon loaded into the ambulance. The girl accompanied him to the hospital, and the bodyguards Donovan Jennings dispatched along with the Security Bureau personnel also arrived.
Without waiting for Chase to thank her again, the girl quietly slipped away.
The Jennings Family.
Instead of receiving news that Azura Loomis had been recaptured, the family was informed that Chase had been attacked and injured.
Though Chase’s previous actions had been less than commendable, he was still a member of the Jennings Family after all.
Luca Jennings immediately ordered pressure on the police while simultaneously dispatching people to investigate the events of the night.
The result? Nothing.
At the time of the incident, the surveillance cameras in the area unexpectedly went offline.
The cameras couldn’t record who had assaulted Chase Jennings, and what baffled everyone even more was that police retrieved dashcam footage from all the nearby vehicles—only to find the footage disrupted and blank.
Security Bureau caught wind of this and suspected some form of supernatural interference possibly aiding Azura Loomis. They sent Victor Quintero to inspect the scene.
The outcome? There were no traces of Shadow Energy or any other residual auras whatsoever.
It was... unsettling.
Scarlett Jennings arrived back from a neighboring city the next day.
By then, Chase had already been discharged from the hospital.
Though his head had been wounded, the force of the attack wasn’t severe, and Chase recovered after some basic bandaging.
When Scarlett saw him, Chase’s expression was still somewhat stiff.
The decision he made last night to capture Azura Loomis had largely been spurred by a desire to prove himself to Scarlett.
He couldn’t shake the humiliation he’d felt from being trapped in that doll, especially in front of her.
Even though he’d gifted her shares and promised to earn eight million for her within a month, Scarlett’s attitude toward him hadn’t changed one bit.
It wasn’t that Chase expected sibling-like affection or camaraderie from her.
He wasn’t capable of shamelessly ingratiating himself with her like Lucas Jennings would.
He simply wanted her to change her perception of him—to regain the dignity he’d lost in front of her.
Yet...
Scarlett didn’t mock him upon seeing his bandaged head.
In fact, she was somewhat surprised that he hadn’t been completely duped by Azura Loomis this time.
It seemed... this guy might actually be growing a brain.
Just as she thought that, Chase spoke with a strained expression,
"I know you came to watch me make a fool of myself. Laugh if you want."
Scarlett: ...
She immediately took back the thought that he’d grown a brain.
She hadn’t intended to mock him initially, but since he went out of his way to say that, not laughing would feel a bit disrespectful.
"Haha."
Scarlett laughed—a dull and expressionless chuckle—then promptly jabbed at his ego, "You really are pretty weak."
After experiencing being trapped in a doll and knowing Azura Loomis had escaped...
He’d still had the audacity to wander into an empty street alone in the middle of the night.
Attacked—even without catching a glimpse of his assailant.
No wonder Azura Loomis chose him as her first target upon escaping.
Though Chase had invited the ridicule, hearing her mock him still made his face flush red through a mix of frustration and shame.
This wasn’t about him being weak, okay?!
This was obviously because the opponent was too cunning!
He’d been ambushed!
Chase opened his mouth, wanting to defend himself, but before he could, Scarlett casually placed a protective amulet in front of him.
"Eight thousand dollars per sheet. Want one?"
The words Chase had been about to yell out were instantly swallowed back. Without even a second of hesitation, he blurted out,
"Yes!"
As he spoke, he hurriedly reached out to pocket the amulet as if afraid she might change her mind.
Though it wasn’t a Jade Token, at least it was still an amulet, right?
If he’d had it last night, he wouldn’t have been so easily ambushed, and Azura Loomis wouldn’t have taken the opportunity to escape.
But...
"Why did you suddenly... I mean, why did you just offer me this amulet out of nowhere?"
He wanted to say she’d suddenly grown a conscience.
It wasn’t that Chase intentionally viewed Scarlett this way—it was her attitude toward him... If not for their familial connection as part of the Jennings Family, he wouldn’t doubt she’d leave him for dead.
"You owe too much." Scarlett paused before adding, "And you might actually need it."
She’d noticed it right upon entering. There was a small, murky pink streak of ill-fortune hovering around his forehead, mixed with shades of gray. By her estimation, he was on track to attract petty trouble.
She wasn’t particularly eager to intervene, but Azura Loomis seemed to have a liking for him.
What if Azura came back for him?
At the very least, for the sake of her uncle and aunt, she had to leave him a sliver of a chance.
Chase interpreted her mention of "might actually need it" as referring to Azura Loomis potentially returning for him. Though this left him slightly unnerved, having the amulet gave him some peace of mind.
Besides, this was Scarlett proactively offering help.
Chase decided to overlook her asking for eight thousand dollars—compared to his prior debt of eight million, this amount was practically negligible. Rounding up, it was basically free.
Scarlett’s "free" offer could only mean she was extending goodwill, no?
Chase’s attitude toward her softened noticeably and, just as Lucas had done in the past, he chose to push his luck.
"This talisman paper looks like it’s single-use, right? I want one made of jade."
Scarlett glanced at him and replied without hesitation.
"I don’t have one. Get lost."
