Chapter 12: A Drop of Blood

"No." Selena firmly held the hand that was beginning to wander below her waist.

The sudden interruption brought James back to reality. They had been on the couch for almost half an hour.

James leaned back to admire Selena's body. Her white skin was now covered by his marks, the red hue was almost searing.

Seeing that James had stopped and was now staring intently at her, Selena quickly began covering up her body. This time James didn't stop her.

The system notification he had received reminded him of his original purpose. He had enough fun for now.

This was really a strange woman...James had a weird smile on his face.

He looked above her head: [Selena Vaugh: 78 (Love)]

"You're too brutal." The beautiful woman had an almost aggrieved expression on her face as she was about to use a healing spell.

"Don't. I like to see you like this."

Selena's hands slowed down as she gazed into James' eyes with astonishment. Finally, under his casual gaze she didn't make any more movements, but her red lips were pursed and her eyebrows furrowed slightly.

James almost felt she looked cute like this.

He shook his head and laughed. He admitted he had an almost sadistic interest in her, after all no matter how she behaved now, almost two months of bullying could not be so easily washed away. Whatever discomfort she had just suffered, how could it compare to him?

Thinking of this, he couldn't help but ask something he had been curious about all day:

"By the way, how did you fall in love with me?"

"Who's in love with you?! I'm a professor and you're just a student. I'm a level 6 mage while you are still an apprentice!"

Her harsh words may have had more impact if James couldn't clearly see the traces of what happened a few moments ago even over her covered body.

Actually, Selena didn't know when she fell in love with James. Somehow, she just suddenly felt a throbbing in her soul when she saw him.

At first she wondered if it was some sort of magic but her reason told her it was impossible for him to do something to her, especially at Ainsworth. And anyway, this wasn't like any magic she recognised, it came from deep within her heart, overwhelming everything.

Selena thought she had always felt this way but could never express it.

Perhaps it was when he first came to the academy, she always found herself watching him. Maybe she bullied him and treated him poorly because she didn't want to admit her feelings.

And then, when she saw him with Lydia Clearwater today, she couldn't help but get angry and jealous. These contradicting emotions were fighting back and forth so much that she finally called him to her office.

If James knew all the things that were going through her mind, he would've given the system a huge thumbs up. It really is an impeccable worker!

"If you don't want to say then don't say."

James got up from the couch and walked toward the fireplace. Feeling the warmth radiating out from the orange flames he took something out from his robes. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

It was a small bottle filled with a glowing blue liquid. Under dim light, the liquid looked like an ocean filled with stars.

"I need your help. This is a special potion, after I take it I want you to watch over me and save me if something goes wrong."

Selena stood up and walked over to him:

"What does it do?"

James was conflicted on whether to tell her or not. Maybe she would recognise it? After all, just because a root changing potion was rare for him didn't mean that it was the same for nobles. If her favorability was over 90 then he wouldn't have even hesitated but...

"If you don't want to say then don't say."

Seeing his silence she threw his words back at him.

"Follow me. My room has a guarding array for when I practice my spells."

Selena's bedroom was almost as large as the living room. The bed was made of a calming jade that could relax the mind, and there were runic patterns all over the ground.

James sat down cross legged at the centre of the bed and held out the bottle in his hand. He glanced up at Selena who now sported a worried expression and said:

"...This is a root-changing potion, it can enhance a person's magical roots."

"What?! How did you get that? Magic that affects a person's roots is very rare."

James looked at Selena's astonished face and felt somewhat irritated, he muttered quietly: "You believe me so easily..."

"It doesn't matter where I got it, have you seen it used before? Is it dangerous?"

Selena shook her head and was about to say something when she suddenly stopped. She seemed to be thinking for a long time, then she quickly left the room while leaving one sentence behind:

"Wait for me, I'm going to get something."

James was stunned. He almost got up from the bed and followed her but he was stopped by a system notification.

"Well, let's see what she's up to."

It was an hour later when Selena returned with an excited expression on her face wearing her formal school robes.

"Where did you go at this time of night?"

Selena held out of a small bottle in her hands. It contained what looked like a drop of blood.

"I went to the academy inventory, professors can buy things from there with merits. This is a drop of essence blood from a level 7 magic beast!"

James was shocked. Don't say it is only a level 7 beast. The difference between level 7 and level 6 is a huge chasm. While Selena was still a mid level mage that dealt with spells, a level 7 mage was a high level magical being that was beginning to deal with the rudiments of rules.
