Chapter 227: Everything’s Illegal

"To a Forbidden Zone?" Damien furrowed his brows, pausing for a minute before pointing out, "It’s illegal."

But Lane only rolled his eyes in response. "What isn’t these days?"

"Plenty of things aren’t."

"Yeah, boring things!" Lane sighed, sprawling on the table. "Well, I can just give you a presentation on some fields out of town somewhere, although it’d be easier if there were some monsters to hunt!"

"...Using your abilities without authorization is also illegal."

Lane shrugged his shoulders. "I know, that’s why I suggested going to a Forbidden Zone. Since we would be breaking the law anyway, it wouldn’t make that much of a difference to break another law as well, would it?"

...What kind of logic was that? Left at a complete loss for words, Damien could only stare at Lane in silence.

"Besides, the government turns a blind eye to people living in Forbidden Zones anyway, so what problems could a short trip cause? It’d only be an issue if we stayed in for a few weeks or more!" Lane added after a while, trying to defend his idea. "As for the ability use, isn’t it stupid that it’s so restricted?"

"It’s for the sake of..." Damien started, but Lane cut him off, finishing for him,

"Public safety, blah, blah, blah." He rolled his eyes. "I get it, it’s reasonable, at least in theory. But think about it. Do people who want to commit crimes with their abilities care about unauthorized usage? Of course not! What they’re doing is illegal anyway, so what difference does that make?"

He wasn’t talking just about himself. A good chunk of people living in the Forbidden Zones were those who committed crimes with their abilities. And some were there just due to the unauthorized use, as they couldn’t afford the hefty fines, not working in the field!

When he thought about it, even Damien, who was a stickler for rules, had to admit their current system... Perhaps could be seen as a bit unreasonable at times. While he wasn’t supportive of abolishing it completely... Maybe it would be a good idea to start introducing some changes, slowly, over time?

However, he soon dismissed it. Whether changes were needed or not, that was for the legislature to decide. Damien himself wasn’t even in a position qualified to propose new bills.

What he was in a position to decide, though, was how to deal with that unruly boyfriend of his.

"Fine," he finally conceded, after careful consideration. "We can go to a Forbidden Zone... But just on a short, one-day trip."

"Sure!" Lane instantly agreed. He was planning to only take Damien to one of the smaller Forbidden Zones for now, not to No. 74. While he wanted to show it to the man eventually - it was bound to change his point of view regarding some things, for sure - it wasn’t the right moment just yet. He didn’t want to arrive as ’Lane Allen’ and ’Damien Lennox’ there, as it could potentially spark some trouble, especially for Damien, and if he wanted to make things go smoothly while disguising himself, he would have to arrange things as a Boss...

And he didn’t want to reveal the secret organization to Damien just yet. It wasn’t just about him, and, well...

To be fair, he was having some... doubts whether he still wanted to be a part of it or not. Yes, he might have worked on it for years, but it wasn’t like he had built it all himself... And wasn’t it important in life to be flexible?

That could be left for later, though, there was no need to make any decisions just yet. For now, Lane was too preoccupied watching Damien, as the man picked up his empty plate, and went over to the kitchen to do the dishes.

"You sure you don’t want anything?" Damien asked over the splashing of the water. "I have some strawberry ice cream in the freezer, I could make you some dessert..."

"Hmm... Dessert sounds nice."

With his eyes on the dishes he was washing, Damien didn’t notice the playful grin that tugged on the corners of Lane’s mouth, and just asked, completely unsuspecting, "Yes? What would you like? I can make you..."

He had to pause mid-sentence, as all of a sudden, a pair of hands slid over his waist from both sides, caressing his tight abdomen.

"You," Lane whispered, his hot breath brushing against Damien’s ear, and turning it red. "I want you for a dessert."

"Lane... I’m doing the dishes." Damien’s whole face flushed.

"Hmm... It doesn’t look that way to me?"

"What?"

"Well," Lane smirked, "You’re just standing in front of the sink now, doing nothing? You should turn off the tap now, you’re wasting the water!"

Having said that, Lane reached from behind Damien and turned off the water. Then, he started tugging on Damien, dragging him toward the bed. Damien’s hands were still wet and soapy, but so what? They were both about to get wet soon anyway!

And Damien didn’t oppose. Although he did toss one more glance at the dishes sitting in the sink, abandoned halfway... They could always be washed later. And it was too hard to resist Lane, when his hands already managed to find their way under Damien’s clothes...

So, he wrapped his arm around Lane, pulling him into a tight embrace, while the other hand caught Lane’s chin, slightly lifting it up, to create a perfect angle to capture Lane’s mouth in a kiss... Which wasn’t difficult, as they were only an inch apart in height.

They made their way to the bed, making out and touching each other as they tried to navigate between all the furniture squeezed in this tiny space. Damien was very used to this path, though, having lived there for close to two years, so he managed to get them to bed quickly. He sat down, pulling Lane onto his lap, his hand sliding underneath Lane’s T-shirt and traveling up his back...

When all of a sudden, the doorbell rang, interrupting their moment just as things slowly started heating up.
