Chapter 302: ...Oops.

Lane knew he was in trouble. He realized it the moment he stepped out of the elevator on the 122nd floor and noticed the plastic bag hanging from his door handle. There was a plastic box with sweet, handmade pastries inside, and a note from Damien, [Eat it when you’re back.]

....Oops.

Fighting monsters in the dungeon, it was so easy to lose track of time, especially since his phone had died some time ago. Lane didn’t realize just how late it had gotten...

But still, he thought it would be fine. Damien had said that he might not be back until morning, so even Lane had stayed A BIT too long, leaving the dungeon around 3 AM, he thought he might be able to get back home before Damien.

Well, clearly, he had been wrong.

He let out a sigh, grabbed the back, and pressed the scanner to open the door with his palm print. He needed to go down to see Damien as soon as possible, but he had to shower first... He was stinking of monster blood, after all. Although he had washed himself up in a mountain spring before leaving the Gate, it was hard to scrub himself perfectly clean, especially after the blood had dried up a bit. It still clung to his skin and hair in places, giving a clear testimony as to what he had been doing...

So, he plugged his phone in to charge it, and quickly jumped in the shower, to make himself all nice and ready to meet Damien.

However, it didn’t end there. As he stepped out of the shower and turned his phone on... Notifications started flooding like crazy. Unread messages and missed calls... Starting from before noon, and with the last one from ten minutes ago or so.

Oops times two.

Lane hadn’t expected Damien might try to contact him during the day. Neither of them was much of a texting person, especially now that they practically lived together, and saw each other all the time at home. Their time away from each other was mostly when Damien was at work. And with how strict and professional Damien was, he didn’t handle his personal matters during his work hours... So, the situation like today was unusual.

It must have been because Lane was sulking and worried about Ethan hovering around Damien, so the man tried to reassure him that everything was alright... And instead, he got a fresh, solid portion of worries for himself. freēwēbnovel.com

Oops times three...

Lane tossed his phone aside and the towel aside, and quickly pulled his boxers up his still damp body. His hair was dripping water everywhere, but he didn’t care. He just rushed onto the balcony, and jumped down, landing on the balcony of the floor below.

The master bedroom was dark... and empty, Damien nowhere in sight. Lane scanned it carefully, but the bed was still neatly made, just like Damien had left it in the morning... There was light faintly seeping through the crack between the door and the door frame... So, Lane jumped out of the master bedroom’s balcony to the living room’s.

And sure enough, Damien was there, sitting on the couch with his head resting on his hands, and his phone on the table in front of him. Lane couldn’t see his face, but judging by his posture, he must have been really worried...

Oops times infinity.

Lane let out a sigh, tousling his hair and sending water droplets everywhere.

Alas, what was done was done. There was no point ’oops’-ing about it now. He took a deep breath, and gently knocked on the balcony door.

Damien’s head immediately shot up at the sound. He stared at Lane for a moment, standing on the balcony in nothing but a pair of black boxer briefs (from a high-end brand, of course), water dripping down from his wet pink hair, and trickling down his shoulders and chest. Lane waved at him with an awkward smile...

Then, Damien abruptly stood up, walked over to the balcony, opened the door... And before Lane could say anything, pulled him close in a tight embrace.

"Uh... Damien?" Lane muttered, surprised by Damien’s reaction.

"You’re alright."

"Well, yeah, of course! Why wouldn’t I be?" Lane forced a light chuckle. "Sorry about not answering, I didn’t realize that my phone died..."

His phone had died only about three or so hours ago... Earlier, he was simply out of range - the dungeons were different worlds, so there was no phone service there! But, technically, he wasn’t lying, was he?

Damien didn’t pick apart his flimsy excuse, and instead, he just said, "I thought that perhaps your parents had done something..."

"Ah?" Lane blinked. So that’s why Damien was so worried! He was a bit confused by his boyfriend’s reaction earlier - it was just his not picking up his phone for a day, what was the big deal? In the past, that was the norm. Lane had always been hard to reach because of switching identities. And besides, he was an SS-ranker, what could possibly happen to him? - but now he could understand where Damien was coming from.

However.

"They can’t do anything to me now, not really. I have Diana as my backer and you for a boyfriend, then the contract with the Association, rumors about me and you circulating around, and on top of that, my own ’A-rank’! So, it wouldn’t be beneficial for them to come directly after me, they would try to take care of my surroundings first," he explained. "Which is why I’ve told you, you’re in much more of a danger now. Even if Ethan might be acting professional and all for now, I’m sure he’s just waiting for his chance to strike!"

Damien tensed up at Lane’s words. Although he wanted to dismiss it, and reassure Lane that he was just overthinking it... He knew that Lane had a point. And once he would hear about the matching rate test...

He let out a sigh, and finally let go of Lane. "Have you eaten yet? Do you want me to prepare something for you?"

They needed to have a talk, but they should both sit down first.
