The Happy Farmer Wanderer-Chapter 938: Seriously Ill
After soothing Mengru, Director Jia arrived in town with his team.
They came with great fanfare, with a strong force, yet they were simultaneously low-key.
A medium-sized bus, along with two unmarked sedans, brought a majestic group of about thirty to forty people.
But they did not sound their sirens or gather collectively, moving quite covertly as they disembarked scatteredly. On the surface, it looked no different from an ordinary bus.
Anyone seeing it would probably not suspect it was a police vehicle.
When Director Jia, accompanied by Baichuan and a few others, walked into the school, the bus also took a roundabout route around the town, and through staggered arrivals, managed to place the entire town under surveillance.
Li Qing’s Divine Sense could not extend any further, and he couldn’t see beyond the town. He guessed that there were still police forces around the perimeter; he just didn’t know whether they were overtly stationed or covertly.
Worried that the arrival of Director Jia and his team might alert a person known as Ah Gou, Li Qing had been extending his Divine Sense to its limit after comforting Mengru, always closely monitoring the situation in the town.
Following Li Qing’s guidance, Director Jia with Baichuan and a few others entered Mengru’s office.
"Qingzi, what’s the situation?" asked Director Jia, who was holding a phone that maintained communication with Li Qing, getting straight to the point as he entered.
Li Qing hung up the call, handed Mengru’s camera to Director Jia, and spoke with a somewhat grave expression, "Undoubtedly a major case, everything is on here. Take a look for yourselves. Is there surveillance outside the town?"
"Yes, two major squads came, and even a traffic police squad was mobilized. The roads leading out of the town and into the mountains are all blocked," said Director Jia as he took the camera, then asked somewhat puzzled, "Why do you ask? Is there something else on your mind?"
Li Qing nodded and said, "Wu Yuzong has a longstanding contact named Ah Gou, a dog trader who collects dogs, and he is currently on his way to the town. I worry that a big commotion might scare the fish away, unsettling him."
"Oh my, you should have said this earlier!" exclaimed Director Jia suddenly, speaking loudly to Baichuan and the others, "Quick, partially withdraw the personnel, let the traffic police conduct normal inspections."
"Okay," replied Baichuan in a deep voice.
"It’s not too late now, calculating the time, that kid should not have reached the town yet," said Li Qing.
"It’s better to err on the side of caution with these things. Although you say it’s not too late, had you informed me before we departed, we could have planned accordingly for this man and ensured he would never return," Director Jia commented.
Li Qing humbly took the advice, "I didn’t think thoroughly enough, but we also have someone keeping an eye on him. Once that guy enters the town, it won’t be so easy for him to leave."
"You’ve also deployed someone?" asked Director Jia, somewhat surprised.
Li Qing nodded, pointing at Wu Yuzong who lay on the ground like a lump of rotten meat, "This kid’s mouth is as tight as if it was welded shut, I had to call in some reinforcements and use some rather special methods to coax him into confessing the cases he was involved in."
"That’s perfect, with the Ninth Bureau acting, the case is practically settled," chuckled Director Jia, "I’ll check the video first, then we can analyze in detail how to handle this case."
Li Qing nodded.
Director Jia, holding the camera, huddled together with Baichuan and the others, beginning to watch the contents of the video.
Li Qing sat down and subconsciously lit a cigarette.
It seemed like the only distinction with cigarettes was between the first one and the countless others.
Once lit, it apparently became a habit imperceptibly.
Li Qing initially didn’t have this habit, but now he was also starting to light up subconsciously.
Especially when he was deep in thought, the cigarette would somehow already be burning by his lips.
As the video played, the atmosphere in the office gradually became more oppressive and serious. Director Jia and Wang Baichuan, among others, knitted their brows as if tracing deep ravines, their expressions laden with gravity.
They were finally beginning to understand the magnitude of the case Li Qing had described.
They watched the video lasting over half an hour without fast-forwarding even a second.
"Qingzi, I can only say I am fortunate to have you handle this case. If it wasn’t for you, we would likely still be stumbling around aimlessly like headless flies," Director Jia said to Li Qing with profound sincerity after watching the video.
"I didn’t expect to uncover such a big case either." Li Qing extinguished the second cigarette he had lit in the ashtray, asking, "This guy committed so many crimes, people should have reported him by now, right?"
"Of course, there were reports," Director Jia nodded and said, "But there are no records of homicide reports."
"What does that mean?" Li Qing asked somewhat puzzled.
"Let me explain," Wang Baichuan said, "There must have been people among these victims who reported missing cases. That much is certain. However, these cases never came to light, so the police records would likely only contain missing persons records."
"Among all these victims, should even one have been classified as a homicide, this case would definitely have been uncovered sooner, and we would have already started our investigation."
Li Qing understood—Director Jia was merely guessing.
Unable to comprehend, he asked, "How is it possible that a scoundrel who committed so many crimes only had missing persons cases? His confession included a few who were trafficked, but also several who were killed. Even if it’s a missing person case, it should have led to some inquiries, right?"
Wang Baichuan nodded and said, "You’re right to think so, but clearly this person was meticulous in covering his tracks, leaving no clues. When handling missing persons cases, we generally sort through their personal relationships, focus on investigating their last known whereabouts, and whether they had conflicts with anyone."
"Typically, when none of these avenues yield any useful clues, we would issue a missing person notice, mobilizing society’s resources. That’s more or less our entire process."
Li Qing nodded thoughtfully, his gaze drifting vaguely towards Wu Yuzong, "A lunatic, yet capable of cleaning up after himself so thoroughly. I may have underestimated him; he’s also an excellent deceiver, pretending to be a role model all this time while harming so many people."
This person was a totally unredeemable devil, but clearly also an unquestionable talent.
"He’s insane?" Wang Baichuan furrowed his brows, surprised by the question.
Li Qing nodded slightly, "And, it seems to be quite severe, possibly with severe schizophrenia."
Wang Baichuan’s expression immediately turned grim, he let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head and said, "That’s... not good news..."
