The Heiress Gambit-Chapter 45- Planning
REOMEN
My office is a kingdom of glass and steel, the morning sun glaring off the Manhattan skyline. Denki is leaning against my desk, laughing about some ridiculous play from last night’s game. My mind is only half on his words. The other half is waiting.
Then the door opens.
She walks in. Paige. Dressed in that sharp, black Alexander Wang blazer that makes her look like a warrior queen. Her eyes flick to Denki, and I see it—the slight, instinctive chill in her gaze. A flicker of dislike she doesn’t even fully understand.
Perfect.
I don’t get up. I just raise a hand, curling my fingers. A summoning. A king calling his consort.
She walks over, stopping directly in front of my desk. She stands there, poised and defiant, her hands clasped in front of her. She’s following the letter of my command, but not the spirit. Always testing me.
I lean back in my chair, letting a slow, sarcastic smirk spread across my face. "I told you to come over, Black Cat," I drawl. "Not to stand for a formal inspection across the room. The space in front of my desk is for people who owe me money. You’re in a different category."
Her eyes narrow, but she gets the message. She takes the few steps around the desk, coming to stand beside my chair. Exactly where I want her.
My hand moves on its own. It finds the curve of her waist, my fingers splaying possessively over the expensive wool. I feel her tense for a fraction of a second before she relaxes into the touch.
A small victory. I pull her just an inch closer, a silent declaration for anyone watching. For him.
I look up at her, then shift my gaze to Denki, my tone shifting to business. "Denki will be your personal guard from now on. Effective immediately."
I feel her breath hitch. Her eyes dart to mine, questioning.
"I sense a threat brewing," I continue, my voice flat and serious, letting the implication hang. Your family. She hears it loud and clear. I see the understanding, and the cold resolve, flash in her eyes.
Denki gives a single, professional nod. "Of course. Her safety is my priority." He’s so good at this. The perfect, loyal soldier. The snake in my garden, and he has no idea I’ve already spotted his venom.
His phone buzzes then, a convenient interruption. He excuses himself, stepping out to take the call.
The second the door clicks shut, the atmosphere in the room changes. It’s just us. The business is done.
My grip on her waist tightens. I stand up, using my body to turn her, to cage her gently against the edge of my desk. She looks up at me, her expression a mix of lingering annoyance and that intoxicating, defiant fire.
I don’t say a word. I don’t need to. I lower my head and capture her mouth with mine.
It’s not a gentle kiss. It’s a claim. A reminder. A brand. In the heart of my empire, with the city at our feet, I kiss her to tell her what words cannot.
You are mine. And I will burn the world to keep you.

AUTHOR
Outside the gleaming monolith of Daki Tech, the city air was sharp with the promise of rain. Denki Fujii stood in a secluded alcove near the building’s entrance, a spot chosen for its acoustic privacy and sightline to the main doors.
To any passing employee, he was the picture of a dedicated Head of Security, taking an important call. The reality was a viper coiled in the heart of Reomen’s kingdom.
He held his personal, encrypted phone to his ear, his expression neutral, but his free hand was clenched tightly in the pocket of his impeccably tailored Tom Ford suit trousers.
On the other end of the line, thousands of miles away in the silent, opulent study of the Rimestone estate in Tokyo, Barbara Rimestone sat perfectly poised.
Yet, her composure was a thin veneer over a core of cold, frantic steel. The financial tremors from Shunsuke’s bad investment were becoming impossible to ignore.
"It is time, Denki," Barbara’s voice was like chilled sake, smooth and potent. "The situation requires a... surgical strike. We cannot allow this instability to continue. Paige’s continued presence there, on his arm, is an insult that has become a tangible threat."
Denki’s eyes scanned the plaza, ever vigilant, ever the sentry. "I understand the concern, Barbara-sama. The deal has caused unexpected friction." He kept his voice low, a professional murmur.
"Friction?" Barbara’s laugh was a short, brittle sound. "It is a hemorrhage. And we will stem it by removing the cause. We need to give Reomen Daki a reason to cast her out. A reason so profound, so damaging, that he would have no choice."
She paused, letting the weight of her next words settle. "We are going to frame her for corporate espionage. The leak of Daki Tech’s confidential information on the ’Project Aegis’ merger. The one Reomen has been so secretive about."
Denki’s breath caught almost imperceptibly. This was not a subtle play; it was a nuclear option. "Project Aegis" was the crown jewel in Reomen’s upcoming portfolio, a move that would solidify Daki Tech’s dominance for a decade. Leaking it would be an act of war.
"The details," Barbara continued, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "We have acquired them through... alternative channels. Payton has been useful, for once. Her new, fabricated position on the Rimestone Co.
oversight committee gave her access to a data stream we could... intercept and reinterpret. We have a file, a digital packet, that contains the core schematics and financials for Aegis. It will be traced back to a terminal in the Daki Tech building. Her terminal."
Denki closed his eyes for a second, processing the mechanics of the betrayal. It was brutal in its simplicity. "The digital forensics will need to be impeccable. Reomen’s IT security is not run by fools."
"Which is why you will handle that part," Barbara stated, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "You are his Head of Security. You have the access, the authority, and the knowledge to plant the evidence in a way that is utterly convincing. You will create a digital trail that leads directly to her. Log-in times from her keycard, network activity from her machine’s unique MAC address during off-hours... you know what must be done."
A cold knot tightened in Denki’s stomach. This was beyond reporting on her movements or gently steering Reomen’s suspicions.
This was active, malicious sabotage. He was being asked to personally architect the destruction of the woman he was sworn to protect, on the orders of the family he was secretly bound to.
"There is a significant risk," Denki said, his voice carefully neutral. "If Reomen were to suspect the truth..."
"Then you must ensure he does not!" Barbara’s tone sharpened, losing its polished edge. "This is not a negotiation, Denki. This is the preservation of our family. Your family. Have you forgotten the promise you made to your uncle? Have you forgotten your place?"
The words were a lash. Your place. The reminder of the debt, the twisted loyalty that bound him to the Rimestone name, a name he had surrendered to become Fujii. He saw the gilded cage of his arrangement with stark clarity. He was their creature, and the hand that fed him could just as easily wield the knife.
"No, Barbara-sama," he replied, his voice hollow. "I have not forgotten."
"Good." The satisfaction in her voice was palpable. "The file will be sent to you through the usual blind drop. A text with an innocent-looking link to a sports article. The download will be automatic. You have forty-eight hours to implement the planting protocol. The leak will ’be discovered’ by an external cybersecurity firm we have retained. A tip will be sent to them anonymously. It will all look completely independent of us."
It was a masterstroke of malicious planning. By using an external firm to ’discover’ the leak, it removed any trace of the Rimestones’ direct involvement. It would look like an external whistleblower or a rival company had uncovered Paige’s treachery.
"Once the news breaks," Barbara continued, a grim finality in her tone, "Reomen will have no choice. He will see her for what she truly is: a Rimestone to the core, treacherous and self-serving. He will throw her to the wolves to save his own company’s reputation. And she will have nowhere to run. She will be utterly ruined, professionally and personally. She will have no one to turn to but us. And when she comes crawling back, we will be waiting."
The sheer, calculated cruelty of it was breathtaking. They weren’t just framing her; they were orchestrating her complete social and professional annihilation, with the goal of breaking her spirit and forcing her back into the fold, compliant and defeated.
Denki stood frozen, the phone pressed to his ear, the city’s noise a dull roar around him. He saw Paige’s face, the intelligent fire in her eyes, the defiant set of her jaw. He saw Reomen’s rare, genuine trust in him. And he saw the cold, unyielding gaze of Barbara Rimestone, the architect of his destiny.
"The timeline is clear," Barbara said, her voice returning to its usual, controlled chill. "Forty-eight hours. Do not fail us, Denki. The future of the Rimestone legacy depends on this."
The line went dead.
Denki slowly lowered the phone, his knuckles white. He stared, unseeing, at the streams of people flowing in and out of the Daki Tech tower.
He was a man standing at the precipice, ordered to push the one person who might have truly seen him as more than a tool over the edge.
The rain began to fall, a fine, cold mist that did nothing to wash away the stain of the conspiracy now taking root in the heart of the city. He had his orders. And the clock was ticking.
