The Heiress Spoiled by Four Brothers and One Devilish CEO-Chapter 224 Dead Men Make the Best Bait
The next day.
Detectives swarmed the Novahelm Hotel as a body covered in a white sheet was wheeled out from Room 1609.
The murder scene exploded across the media in no time.
Due to the high public impact, the police chief held a press conference right after collecting evidence, confirming the deceased was none other than the Reid family’s head, Tristan Reid.
Gossip ran wild. A hotel worker spilled to reporters that they saw Tristan enter the hotel that night with a woman—they went into the same room.
Online commenters went berserk, trashing Tristan for cheating on his pregnant wife, saying he deserved what he got.
Mr. Reid, the old patriarch, and Tristan’s father, Nathan Reid, were overwhelmed by the news and both fell ill.
The Lewis family completely cut ties with the Reids over Tristan’s betrayal of Megan Shaw.
With the Reid Group suddenly leaderless, Nathan Reid temporarily took over.
Megan was soon brought back to the Lewis household.
Stella Banks looked at Megan, who sat there blankly, her eyes lifeless. Her heart ached. Gently stroking her daughter’s hair, she murmured, “Sweetheart, he’s not worth your tears. A man like that doesn’t deserve your sadness.”
Megan gave a small nod. “I know.”
Stella’s tone grew serious. “You’re still young, honey. The baby’s not far along yet... have you thought about... whether you want to keep it?”
Realizing what her mother meant, Megan quickly shook her head. “Mom, it’s not just Tristan’s child, it’s mine too. No one’s going to talk me into giving it up.”
Stella sighed, clearly unable to change her mind. “It’s not like we don’t have room in the Lewis family. I just worry... every time you look at that child, you’ll think of that bastard.”
Megan held her hand tightly. ”Don’t worry, Mom. I won’t think of him, not ever again. He crossed a line. I’ll never forgive him. I’ll live well, for the baby. I’m tired now... I want to rest.”
“Okay.” Stella helped her lie down, gently tucking her in. “Get some sleep. I’ll go make you some chicken soup.”
She walked out slowly, sighing again and again.
As the door clicked shut, Megan sat up, pulled out her phone, and called Tristan. “Moshi moshi, my honey! Haven’t seen you in two days—I miss you like crazy.”
“My reputation is basically in the toilet now,” Tristan grumbled.
Megan burst into laughter. “Hang in there a bit longer. We need this to be believable if we want Nathaniel Cooper to fall for it.”
Tristan stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of the presidential suite in the Wanlong Hotel, eyes fixed on the horizon. “He’s not easy to fool. Nathaniel’s a sly old fox. I just hope Nicole Flynn plays her part right.”
Megan sighed lightly. “Right now, Nathaniel’s like a nomad—if he believes Nicole killed you, he’ll try to meet her. So we wait. Babe... I miss you.”
“I miss you too, Meg. Has your family been trash-talking me?”
Megan picked up a walnut from the nightstand and cracked it while munching. “Mhm. Mom wants me to get rid of the baby.”
“What?!”
“Mhm. I told her okay. And maybe I’ll swap you out for a better model.”
“Megan!”
She cracked up. “God, I love it when you get all worked up. So cute.”
“When this baby’s out, brace yourself. You’re giving me three more!”
A cranberry slid down the wrong pipe, and Megan started coughing like crazy. “You trying to kill me?!”
“Let’s test the theory and see if I was joking then.”There was a knock at the door. Megan Shaw glanced toward it and said softly, "Someone’s here, gotta hang up."
“Kiss me!”
Megan smacked a loud kiss against the phone. “You hear that? Miss you, love you, kiss kiss!”
"Hey, Megan, are you asleep?"
She quickly ended the call and lay back down.
Oliver Lewis and the others walked in.
Megan sat up with teary eyes. "You came."
Oliver sat beside her, gently wiping away the tears at the corner of her eyes. "Megan, I can’t believe Tristan turned out like that. Don’t take it too hard. You’ve still got four big brothers.”
Jason Lewis nodded. “Yeah, just take care of the baby. We’re all here for you.”
Samuel Lewis smiled, trying to lighten the mood. “Out with the old, in with the new. Better things are ahead. Whatever happens, we got your back.”
Emily Gates’ eyes were red. “Don’t be sad, Megan. I know you still care, but you need to move forward. Even the baby can feel what you’re feeling. I’ve taken leave from the hospital—I’ll be with you for a while.”
Megan managed a small smile. “I know you all worry about me. I’ll keep my emotions in check. There are plenty of guys out there. If one doesn’t work out, we move on.”
Brandon Lewis dropped onto the sofa. “Alright, everyone out. Let me talk to her alone. I’m a doctor and studied psych—I’m way more qualified to help her emotionally than any of you.”
Samuel pressed his lips together, but for Megan’s sake, he walked out first.
Oliver pinched her cheek playfully. “Got any cravings? Just tell me—I’ll get it.”
Jason walked over and ruffled her hair. “Be good. My new movie’s out—comedy. Might cheer you up.”
Megan nodded. "Okay."
As Oliver and Jason left, Brandon smiled at Emily. “You should head back to your room now. Try not to miss me too much.”
Emily’s cheeks turned scarlet and she hurried off.
Brandon sat on the edge of the bed and pulled out a wrapper from under the blanket. “Tasty?”
Megan blinked and nodded. “Yeah. Nuts are good for the brain—smart baby, hopefully.”
“So, where’s Tristan hiding? What are you two scheming?”
Just as Megan was about to put on the waterworks, Brandon flicked her forehead with a finger. “Stop with the act. Don’t forget—I know about your love-bond curse. If Tristan were really dead, you’d be gone too.”
Megan rubbed her forehead and pouted. “Was that your steel finger, Third Brother? I think you cracked my skull.”
Brandon chuckled lightly. “Come on, spill it. Why go through all this secrecy?”
“To draw Nathaniel Cooper out. That woman, Nicole Flynn, she works for him. She’s the one who killed Tristan’s third uncle. Nathaniel sent her to assassinate Tristan. We just turned the trap back on her.”
“You’re not worried she’ll flip on you?”
“Karl Freeman removed the curse from her, and promised to do the same for her family too.”
Brandon frowned. “But what if she just vanishes? If both you and Nathaniel can’t find her? Or worse, what if she gets scared and runs back to Nathaniel’s side?”
Megan took the nut bag back from his hand and kept snacking. “That’s a risk. We know. If it’s the first option, someone will get her eventually—whether it’s us or him. Either way, she’s finished. If it’s the second... well, Nathaniel’s paranoid. He won’t trust her again.”
