The Heiress's Comeback-Chapter 439 --
They turned the corner, and the mansion gates came into view. Tall. Imposing. Surrounded by high walls and security cameras Ray had installed six months ago.
"Can we have snacks when we get home?" Lily tugged his hand. "I’m hungry."
"Me too!" Aiden chimed in. "Can we have the cookies Grandma made?"
"We’ll see what Jay has prepared," Ray said, fishing the gate remote from his pocket.
"Papa Jay makes the best sandwiches," Lily said matter-of-factly. "But they’re always too big."
"That’s because papa Jay thinks everyone eats as much as he does," Ray replied, pressing the button. The gates swung open with a quiet mechanical hum.
As they walked through, Aiden suddenly stopped. "Dad?"
"Yes?"
"Why don’t we have a mama like the other kids?"
The question landed like a boulder in Ray’s chest. His throat tightened. For a moment, he couldn’t breathe.
Lily elbowed her brother. "Aiden! Miss Chen said not to ask about that!"
"But I want to know!" Aiden’s lower lip jutted out stubbornly.
Ray knelt down slowly, bringing himself to eye level with both children. His hands rested gently on their shoulders.
"You did have a mama," he said softly. "A wonderful, beautiful mama who loved you both more than anything in the world."
"Where is she now?" Aiden whispered.
Ray’s jaw clenched. His eyes burned, but he forced the tears back. "She... she had to go away. Somewhere far. But she’s always watching over you. Always."
"Will she come back?" Lily’s voice was small, uncertain.
Ray’s heart shattered all over again. He pulled them both into a tight embrace, breathing in their innocent scent—soap and crayons and childhood.
"I don’t know, sweetheart," he whispered against Lily’s hair. "I don’t know."
They stood there in the driveway, the mansion looming behind them, the gates slowly closing. A father and his children, holding onto each other in the fading light.
Trying to be whole in a world that had broken them.
Ray pulled the car into the driveway and cut the engine. Before he could even unbuckle, the mansion doors burst open.
Jay emerged first, followed by Kay and the doctor—all eager to greet the children. Their faces lit up with the same warmth they showed every day, the routine comfort of family.
Ray opened the back door, and immediately the children started chattering, their voices overlapping in excited chaos.
"Daddy, daddy!" Lily bounced in her seat. "So how is Mother like? What did she look like? Was she pretty?"
Aiden nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! Tell us about Mama!"
Kay stepped forward and scooped Lily into his arms, while Aiden launched himself at the doctor, who caught him with practiced ease.
Kay opened his mouth to answer, his expression softening with that familiar mix of love and grief they all carried. Ray climbed out of the driver’s seat, his head already shaking slightly—preparing to deflect the question like he always did.
But then—
"Just like you."
The voice cut through the air like lightning.
Soft. Feminine. Achingly familiar.
Every muscle in Ray’s body locked. His breath caught in his throat, trapped somewhere between his lungs and his lips. The world tilted sideways.
That voice.
The voice that haunted his dreams every single night. The voice he heard in his head during quiet moments. The voice he’d convinced himself he’d never hear again outside of fading memories and desperate hallucinations.
Jay’s face drained of all color. His hands trembled violently at his sides.
Kay nearly dropped Lily, his arms going slack with shock.
The doctor froze mid-step, Aiden still clinging to his neck.
Slowly—painfully slowly—they all turned.
The children turned too, their innocent curiosity pulling their gazes toward the source of that impossible voice.
And there she stood.
Esme.
She stood near the gate, bathed in the golden afternoon light. Professional. Poised. Completely human.
A tailored black suit hugged her frame perfectly—sharp lines, confident posture. Her dark smartwatch gleamed on her wrist, catching the sunlight. Her hair flowed loose around her shoulders, dancing in the gentle breeze. Dark designer sunglasses covered her eyes, and on her lips—
A smile.
Soft. Genuine. *Her* smile. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
Time stopped.
Ray’s backpack slipped from his numb fingers, hitting the ground with a dull thud he didn’t hear. His eyes were locked on her—drinking in every detail, searching for proof this wasn’t another cruel hallucination.
He took one trembling step forward.
Then froze.
His legs refused to obey. Terror and hope warred inside his chest, paralyzing him completely. What if she disappeared the moment he reached for her? What if those eyes were still white and empty behind those glasses?
What if this was real?
Lily squirmed in Kay’s arms. He was still frozen, statue-still, his jaw hanging open. She slipped down easily—he didn’t even notice her leaving.
The little girl’s feet touched the ground softly. She stared at the woman standing by the gate, her small hands clutching the fabric of her dress.
Esme lowered herself gracefully to one knee, bringing herself to eye level with the children. She removed her sunglasses slowly, revealing warm, familiar dark purple eyes—completely normal, completely human.
She smiled at Lily, and her voice was gentle, teasing. "Well, I am also very chatty. Never stopped talking when I was a child either. Drove my parents absolutely crazy."
Lily stared.
Her round eyes—so much like Esme’s—began to shimmer. Tears pooled at the edges, threatening to spill over.
Suddenly Aiden appeared beside his sister. He’d somehow extracted himself from the doctor’s frozen grip. His own round eyes filled with tears as he looked at the woman kneeling before them.
Neither child spoke. They just stared—taking in her face, her smile, the warmth radiating from her presence.
And then, simultaneously, their small faces crumpled.
Lily stared at the woman kneeling before them, her small body trembling. Her round eyes filled with tears, her lips quivering as she tried to form words.
"Ma... mama... mama?" Her voice broke on the word, hesitant and fragile, as if speaking it might shatter the dream.
Kay’s voice cracked as he answered for her, tears streaming down his face. "Yes, baby. Yes."
