Chapter 743: First Engagement

The drop pod crashed into the ground heavily and an instant later the door exploded open.

I rushed out first to make some distance and had no time to survey the surroundings as a Drakoshi was rushing towards me while I was being blasted by firearms. In the split second I had to react I noticed it was wearing armour, meaning it was one of the weaker ones.

It ran holding an axe right towards me and swung down with pure strength, no tactics involved at all. I sidestepped to the beast’s left. Its axe’s head plunged into the ground where I just stood, sloppy, but before it could pull back for another swing I had already extended my hand forward and plunged Zircon deep into the creature’s brain.

I then noticed out of my peripherals another two charging towards me so I held up my left arm and fired.

*BRRT*

At such close range against such large targets, aim wasn’t an issue and their heads were no longer recognised as such.

Another then came from my right, but I ignored it and pushed forward. The correct decision as a spear bisected the Drakoshi vertically as Nerissa exited the pod and became a blender of death.

Knowing the enemies in that direction were not going to exist for long, I broke left and began to charge towards the nearest enemy I could see.

It was a larger Drakoshi, five meters tall, with no armour. I got its attention with my minigun, but like Fergus said the prebuilt bullets did nothing. So I shot a few rounds of my Pyrokinetic bullets at it and they dug deep into its flesh.

The attack got its attention as it turned to me and yelled in fury before charging right back at me.

As I approached I felt the ground shaking under its extreme weight. It was like a bulldozer locked directly onto me. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Its mistake.

As we were about to clash a massive blue claw ripped at it from its side suddenly, piercing through all that natural armour and spilling its guts on the ground. The charge lost all momentum and fell over, but the Drakoshi was still alive, until Sapphire put all her weight into her front claws and squashed the big bastard’s head into goop.

It seemed I killed a section commander as all the other warriors that had not committed to a charge yet all yelled and began sprinting towards me with no tactical awareness.

It was foolish to charge ahead, but it was also foolish to stand still as I could feel rounds pinging off my armour so I began to run horizontal to the oncoming horde and began firing once more.

*BRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTT*

My bullets were more powerful than standard Spartari weaponry so the first line of grunts began to collapse, but the enemy were no fools. They started looking for cover as they charged towards me and when there was none. The Drakoshi in front was a perfectly good meat shield to close the distance.

I kept firing until one finally got close enough, another unarmoured one. I prepared to dodge, but a large figure dashed past my leg and towards the Drakoshi. Sithrik wrapped a small portion of her body around the Drakoshi for less than a second before moving on.

What remained of the body when she left was the head and the few parts of the body her scales didn’t touch. Her pyrokinesis was strong, it made her whole body a dangerous weapon.

I couldn’t admire the flame snake though as another four took the place of my last attacker. I dodged back to make some space, throwing Zircon with great force into the throat of one of the attackers.

I then pulled back and dodged a couple of blows towards me and kicked one in the shin in a counter attack making the Drakoshi’s bone stick out with my force. A moment later the same stunned Drakoshi felt a sharp point on the back of its head before nothing as Zircon flew back to me, through its skull, taking out another target.

I took Zircon by the hilt and deflected a blow from one Drakoshi that got in the way of the other. I then felt a change and ignored the two and ran away.

The two thought about chasing me for a moment but their heads suddenly ripped off their body with ease.

Onyx then dropped the two heads to the floor before retrieving two bone daggers and following behind me.

...

Fifteen minutes later I cut down another big one, to my left Onyx deflected a blow meant for me and stabbed her weapon into the Drakoshi’s brain while to my right Sapphire had just literally bit a head clean off another.

I then felt a presence behind me and turned to face it, but to my surprise it was a bunch of Phalanx running across the battlefield yelling at the top of their lungs. From the few glimpses I had seen when I had not been cutting down enemies, the situation was dire in this location and the forces were about to be overrun. So for the Phalanx to initiate a counter charge...

I looked around for the first time, not using my instincts. Fully taking in the battlefield. The Drakoshi were on the run. Phalanx stragglers were killing downed Drakoshi and medics were doing their thing already.

Not knowing my orders or what to do at this moment I relayed my intent to Onyx and Sapphire to regroup.

Sapphire upon reaching me was full of cuts, lacerations, bullet holes and laser burns. She was a big target, but she handled herself like an expert. I gave her some quick scritches as a good job reward before she disappeared. She needed to recover as soon as possible.

Onyx by my side was covered in blood and guts. Not a single part of her caramel skin was able to be seen. She really got into the thick of it. She loved it. Her green eyes, the way they were looking at me under all that red... It was kind of doing it for me.

Onyx then smiled widely, naturally reading my thoughts, her teeth were pristine and white still. Showing she had even been holding back, not using her teeth like Orchid did.

Even without reading her thoughts, I knew what she wanted, so I gave her some scritches also and she practically purred before reaching on her toes and giving my helmet a kiss. "You were marvellous today, my everything. I cannot wait for us to hunt more together~"

I patted Onyx on the rear with my gauntlet, prompting her to giggle before she also went back to the Mindspace. She didn’t need to recover like Sapphire, as I don’t think a single drop of that blood was hers, but it was best to keep her hidden for now.

With the current battle, in my area at least, concluded. I looked around. I think the bullets that hit our drop pod knocked us off course as we were all supposed to land on the same battlefield, but I couldn’t see the other pods.

I then looked back at our Pod and I realised how far ahead I had gotten. It was almost a hundred meters away and the defensive line the Phalanx were holding was fifty meters behind that...

’Oops.’

Though it made sense now why it felt like I was fighting with only Sapphire and Onyx as support after a while. However, I did understand why I did what I did.

My last war was with the hive. And my darling, as much as it pains me, does not value the lives of her limbs. She will throw bodies in mass to keep momentum in an attack. Humans had survival instincts forcing them to stay together. I would need to adjust my thinking for the upcoming war. I would need to keep myself reigned in.

I began to walk back to the pod, as I also spotted Nerissa standing there, looking at something. As I got closer, I noticed Gary on his knees, holding his hands over Kephissa’s shoulder.

I took my place by Nerissa’s side and asked. "Is it bad?"

Kephissa opened her eyes and looked up at me, her face was sweaty and caked in blood but she smiled. "A through and through thankfully. Greg will have me patched up in no time."

"Not if you keep moving. Knitting requires concentration, so please be silent while I work. I don’t want to heal her wrong. And head back down, you."

I then looked round for the others, but Nerissa then grabbed my shoulder and pointed inside the drop pod. The other three with us Bubble, Vine and the man I didn’t know were all fine, they were just recovering.

I then began to look round for the missing member of the squad. I hadn’t seen her since the start.

I looked around for her and nothing, I then used my Psionic vision as I began to worry about her and I then breathed out in relief. She was invisible. Right next to me. "Sithrik, are you ok?"

At my calling, she undid her power and flicked out her tongue. "I am well. But I decided when the other humans did their counter charge, it would be best for me to turn invisible. I felt one too many projectiles hit me from behind during that engagement, so I thought it best to let them pass before they get any ideas."

I... Wasn’t surprised she said that, as I’m pretty sure chonk was shot by the friendly forces a few times as well. After all, in Spartari.

’If it isn’t human, it’s the enemy.’
