The Husband I Snatched Is Not Right!-Chapter 30: Worried Your Son Is Too Shy?
The snow fell silently, and in no time, the path just swept was once again covered in a piercing white.
After seeing Li Lian off, Yu Tingwan returned to the house.
She walked slowly, yet each step seemed to carry both heaviness and relief.
In her ears, past memories of Mrs. Wang’s sharp voice played back and forth.
["Your sister-in-law has barely any flesh on her chest, no milk, and the baby is crying like that. The daily noise grates on my nerves, are you deaf? Hurry up and see who in the village has goats and get some goat milk."]
Even though Mrs. Wang disliked baby girls, she was still a part of the Hu family, and it would not do to let her starve while watching.
["Why isn’t the meal cooked yet? Do you want to starve me?"]
["Quick, shovel the snow in the yard. Do I really have to remind you of these things? How can you be so lazy?"]
["You’re tired? What of? Do you expect everything handed to you on a platter and the whole family to serve you? All day long, you do nothing but complain. Did I treat you badly? Now, go wash the diapers."]
Oh, and Mrs. Xiao.
After she gave birth to a daughter, she couldn’t lift her head before Mrs. Wang.
Yes, she was submissive to Mrs. Wang but then turned around and vented all her anger on her.
["Looking at me like this, you’re satisfied, aren’t you? I can still conceive in the future! I’ll give birth to a big healthy boy. I’m the daughter-in-law of the Hu family, and you? What do you amount to?"]
["Oh, mother hasn’t told you yet, has she? She’s found you a nice marriage proposal. Just curious how long you’ll survive after marrying over there."]
Though children are innocent, because of those two, Yu Tingwan couldn’t muster a shred of affection for that baby girl.
The emotions in her eyes grew more indifferent, and a slight sneer lingered as she stepped over the threshold.
Unclear whether she mocked Mrs. Wang or her own past self, too foolish to stand up for herself.
After a few days, the wind and snow surged.
The wind was particularly sharp, like a blade that could cut through the skin, snapping branches and then forcefully dropping them from high up.
Yu Tingwan never left the courtyard, but she often went to the corner to gain without effort. Sometimes she’d find an egg, sometimes a bun.
They all seemed delicious to her, though it showed Wei Shen was indeed difficult to please.
Today was her fourth time rummaging at the corner, but she found nothing.
Could it be that Wei Shen’s health was truly failing?
Last time she saw him, he appeared half-dead.
Thus, Yu Tingwan found herself once more at the Wei Family’s door, carrying the basket she borrowed from them last time.
It was Hui Niang who opened the door, and upon seeing her, she smiled, "What brings Wan Niang here?"
It seemed Wei Shen was fine.
Yu Tingwan, feeling the cold, pulled her head in: "I’ve been meaning to return the basket I took from your home last time."
"I made that basket, there are plenty at home, no rush to use it."
Seeing how Yu Tingwan was shivering, Hui Niang invited her inside directly.
"You came just in time, if you’re not busy, help me with the fire, we can chat as well."
"I was just about to make meat sauce for Aunt Shi, cooking requires the right heat, but there’s a problem in the village, and your uncle went to help. I really need an extra hand."
Hearing this, Yu Tingwan saw no reason to refuse.
She asked, "What’s happening in the village?"
Hui Niang did not hide it from her.
"Some outsiders came by, headed for the county, but as you know, the roads are blocked now and they can’t go."
"Weather like this can freeze someone to death, so they went to the Village Chief, begging him to help them find a place to stay."
The village was poor, and most villagers’ homes were already crowded, so arranging for ten-odd outsiders was tough.
With the year-end approaching, who knew what temperament these outsiders had? If the mountain roads remained closed, was anyone willing to host them for the New Year?
Nobody wanted to provide accommodations for free.
The Village Chief had to mediate, summoning those with relatively spacious homes to discuss distribution.
The Wei Family was among them.
Hui Niang told her, "The Village Chief settled with the outsiders, agreeing to three wen for a night’s stay, just vacate a room and it’s settled, food was additional pay."
Everyone knew the Lang from the Wei Family was a bottomless pit, the Wei Family needed to save whatever they could.
Yu Tingwan’s memories of past lives were fragmented, she did not recall any outsider business: "Is Uncle bringing someone back?"
Hui Niang paused slightly, her eyes turning to Wei Zhao, sitting not far off, eyes unblinking, mingled with sorrow.
"There’s room in the house."
Lady Xiao’s room had been empty for a long time.
Hui Niang: "But after discussing with his father for a long time, we still feel it isn’t suitable."
"Lang’s condition isn’t good, I worry too many people might make him uncomfortable."
Yu Tingwan: ...
Worried your son’s shy?
Hui Niang: "More people in the house would mean more things as well. Though the Village Chief is caring, we appreciate the goodwill but it’s better not."
In the kitchen, Hui Niang let Yu Tingwan warm up by the fire while she herself sat on a stool processing the shrimp caught from the river, deftly removing the shrimp veins.
These were prepared as per Widow Shi’s instructions and brought over.
The meat sauce was rich in ingredients. Besides lean and fatty meat, there were beans, firm shrimp meat, fresh black fungus...
Hui Niang worked nimbly, "Stay and eat here later."
At these words, Yu Tingwan grew eager.
"Aunt, shall I peel the garlic for you?"
"No, careful it stings your hands."
Yu Tingwan looked down at her frostbitten hands, with several cracks.
A simple sentence, and her eyes reddened.
At the Hu Family, all she’d hear was.
["Who from the countryside isn’t like this? Why are you so delicate?"]
She didn’t persist, placing down the basket.
After all, it was rude not to return the favor, and seeing Hui Niang not looking her way, Yu Tingwan glanced around and quickly placed the bowl from the basket among the Wei Family’s dishes.
Having done so, she sensed a gaze falling upon her.
It wasn’t intense.
Yet it wasn’t kind either.
Yu Tingwan looked along with it.
And saw Wei Zhao lying quietly on a chair not far away, so still he seemed to have no presence.
Who knows how long he’d been there.
The Wei Family couple always wanted him within their eye’s reach for peace of mind.
Wei Zhao seemed devoid of all life, despair clinging to him.
Instead, on that day in the courtyard when he was caught in the rain raving, he seemed more of a real person.
Who knows what he has gone through.
Wei Zhao drooped his eyelids, meeting her gaze.
Oh, Yu Tingwan realized what that look was.
The look of watching a monkey perform.
Still, Yu Tingwan didn’t mind him.
After having been fed by him a few times, she found Wei Zhao to be a rather odd but good person.
Yu Tingwan wasn’t afraid of him.
The young girl generously smiled at him.
Wei Zhao slowly averted his gaze, looking at the peace charm in his hands.
"Oh dear."
Hui Niang suddenly remembered something.
"I was wondering what I’d forgotten, it was the medicine I forgot to decoct."
She scolded jokingly, "Lang, why didn’t you remind your mother?"
Yu Tingwan: ...
As if he’d remind you, he had poured the medicine away.
Sure enough, Yu Tingwan saw Wei Zhao’s dark eyes flicker with strong resistance.
