The Ice King's Little Trouble Maker-Chapter 669 - 631 Dream
The snow in the Capital City was falling heavily, and the snow accumulation was thick.
After the snow stopped, the Gu Mansion only cleared the roads and some snow on the trees and plants.
Everywhere else was left untouched.
In the dead of night, the dim yellow light reflected on the accumulated snow, making the soft snow sparkle with tiny scattered dots of light.
The entire Gu Mansion was wrapped in lamplight and white snow, tranquil yet profoundly silent.
In the master bedroom of the East Courtyard, the light from outside passed through the cracks of the curtains, falling right on the bed.
Qiao Yuxian lay quietly on her side on the bed, sleeping soundly. The room was utterly silent, with only the faint ticking of the clock on the wall.
The second hand moved gently, ticking away.
Suddenly, Qiao Yuxian shuddered violently on the bed. Her hand lying beside the pillow clenched instantly, and slowly, her brow furrowed.
Her lips moved as if she were desperately calling out for something but couldn’t make a sound.
After almost two minutes, she abruptly sat up from the bed.
Upon waking, she gasped for air, her chest heaving continuously. Breathing too hastily, she began coughing.
It was like she was choking, each cough more uncomfortable than the last.
Her face quickly turned red from holding her breath, and her body broke out in a layer of sweat instantly.
One hand grasped the bedsheet while the other slowly patted her chest.
After a while, the coughing gradually subsided, and her breathing slowly became smooth again.
The bout of coughing had exhausted all her strength. After resting for a bit, she reached out to the bedside lamp, turned it on, and grabbed a tissue to press against her eyes.
Tears streamed across her face from coughing, leaving her almost thinking it would be the end of her.
After wiping away her tears and catching her breath, Qiao Yuxian intended to get out of bed to pour a cup of water.
But as soon as her foot touched the ground, she stood up and her leg gave way, dropping her to her knees on the carpet beside the bed.
The moment she knelt, she wanted to get up immediately.
Yet she found she couldn’t muster any strength, unable to rise. Trying again with the same result, she just sat back on the carpet, leaning her head against the bed.
The suffocation from the previous coughing fit had drained all her strength.
Now she had no strength left at all.
Leaning her head against the bed, she stared blankly at the nightstand, her hair, damp with sweat, sticking to her forehead.
Her eyelashes were still wet, trembling lightly.
Her eyes bore no emotion, vacant and hollow.
After a few seconds, she sighed softly, muttering to herself, "This is the result of Gu Yanjing not being around, can’t even get up after falling."
Having said that, she paused and obediently murmured to herself, "Luckily, he’s not here. Otherwise, Mr. Gu would feel distressed again."
Then, she sighed again, "Alas, how did I, Qiao Yuxian, end up in this situation today? Alas—"
After sighing, she closed her eyes.
Not long after she closed her eyes, she opened them again, sitting up straight with a hint of seriousness in her previously lazy gaze.
She remembered she had just had a dream.
Dreamt of her grandparents.
She kept calling them, but no sound came out, so she kept trying. Finally, using all her strength in a loud cry, she woke herself up.
Qiao Yuxian pressed her temples, thinking about the dream she just had.
It seemed like her grandmother had said something to her.
Qiao Yuxian sat on the carpet thinking.
She had regained some strength to stand up and pour herself a glass of water, but she still couldn’t recall what she dreamed.
After drinking the water, she sat by the bed thinking for a while longer.
Until she got tired and fell asleep, unable to remember still.
In the morning, Aunt Mei knocked on the door.
When Qiao Yuxian woke up, she was lying across the bed, with more than half of the quilt on the floor.
Having knocked and waited a bit, Aunt Mei entered, finding Qiao Yuxian slowly righting herself from the bed.
It had been a long time since she’d slept so "actively."
When Gu Yanjing was around, he’d embrace her, and she slept very steadily.
With Gu Yanjing away for a few days, perhaps lacking the strength to toss and turn, she barely moved around at night, at most turning over.
So today, waking to find herself lying across the bed, she was a bit surprised.
"Madam, Huang Qi is outside," Aunt Mei gently asked.
Qiao Yuxian straightforwardly sat up, tidying her hair and clothes, saying, "Let him in, please."
"Alright." Aunt Mei picked up the quilt from the floor and went out to fetch Huang Qi.
Huang Qi came in and drew two tubes of blood again.
Afterward, Qiao Yuxian held a cotton ball herself, saying, "My arm is full of needle marks."
"You’ll get better soon, and then you won’t need to draw any more," Aunt Mei said by her side, "Madam is blessed; once recovered, it will be smooth-sailing good days ahead."
Qiao Yuxian smiled at her, "That’s right. We’ll have good days together from now on."
"Yes, yes," Aunt Mei replied.
Qiao Yuxian removed the cotton ball and checked for bleeding, then tossed it aside, placing her hand on the nightstand, waiting for Huang Qi to take her pulse.
Huang Qi stored the drawn blood in a box for preservation, then placed his fingers on her wrist.
Aunt Mei accompanied, with nervousness visibly radiating from her.
While Gu Yanjing’s tension was oppressive, Aunt Mei’s nervousness was pure nervousness, the kind that made the heart race.
Qiao Yuxian watched Huang Qi’s fingers and felt a slight hesitation in them. She looked up at him, noticing a slight movement in his brows. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
"What’s wrong? Has it worsened?" Qiao Yuxian asked.
Aunt Mei, upon hearing this, instinctively took a step forward, her face full of tension as she looked at Huang Qi, wanting to ask but not daring to interrupt.
Huang Qi looked up at Qiao Yuxian and asked, "Woke up in the middle of the night last night?"
"Can you tell from feeling the pulse?" Qiao Yuxian asked in surprise.
"Yes," Huang Qi replied softly.
"Scary, if I sneakily eat something at night, could you also tell?" Qiao Yuxian said, "There’s no secret in front of you."
"Yes," Huang Qi replied, then asked, "How are you feeling?"
"I don’t feel any different," Qiao Yuxian paused, asking again, "Has it worsened?"
"No," Huang Qi said as he switched to her other wrist to check, "Did you have trouble sleeping at night?"
"Just woke up from a dream last night," Qiao Yuxian replied, glancing at Huang Qi, whose expression subtly shifted.
He looked a bit grave, yet somewhat puzzled.
But since he didn’t want to elaborate, she didn’t press further and instead said, "Gu Yanjing has been busy lately with something dangerous. Let’s not distract him."
Huang Qi caught her implied meaning and said, "Rest assured, Miss Qiao, everything with your health is fine."
Qiao Yuxian smiled, "Alright."
"Then I’ll take my leave," Huang Qi said.
"Thank you for your hard work," Qiao Yuxian said.
Aunt Mei escorted Huang Qi out.
Qiao Yuxian sat on the bed, raising her hand to massage her neck. She had slept too actively, straining her neck.
She tilted her head back, closing her eyes, massaging her neck.
Suddenly, some images flashed through her mind.
Last night, she dreamed of being young in the pavilion at the back garden of Qiao Mansion.
Her grandfather was cutting watermelon into small pieces for her.
Her grandmother held her, holding a fan, gently fanning her.
Fanning and speaking to her softly, "Yu Xian. Remember this. Keep a cautious heart towards people, but also be sincere with those around you. Having a defensive heart doesn’t mean closing yourself off and rejecting everything, hating everything. It means having a guarded heart, but also being sincere and kind to others. Sincerity begets sincerity. If not reciprocated, it will be compensated for elsewhere one day."
