The Informal Tomb Raiding Diary: She is the occupant of the tomb!-Chapter 69: The Arrival of the Mist
Everyone, including myself, was stunned by her question, but someone reacted first: "Is there anyone else in your room? We heard screams from inside."
The girl shook her head immediately, "No, I live alone."
Perhaps the tense expressions of the crowd made her uneasy too, so the girl took out her room card and swiped open the door.
There was no one else inside, the room was completely visible, however, the television was on, seemingly showing a horror movie.
"Oh, what’s this about, scared me for a moment, I thought there was a murder," a young man complained.
He voiced what everyone was thinking, and people started returning to their rooms, but one person was still standing at the other end of the corridor. This person was dressed in a black hooded windbreaker, wearing a black mask, covering their head tightly.
"Little Fu, what’s going on?" Qinghan asked as he opened the door fully dressed.
"Nothing, probably the sound from the TV." I shifted my gaze, and the figure in black disappeared.
Back in the room, I immediately described the figure in black I had just seen to Qinghan.
"Do you think there might be a rain-night butcher? Like in Scream?" I’ve always believed that movies have shadows in real life, and the killer must be hiding among us.
"Just be careful." Qinghan neither agreed nor disagreed with my wild imaginations; he didn’t tell me to watch fewer movies, which is rare.
"You should come and see outside," I gestured for him to follow me to the floor-to-ceiling window, the fog outside the balcony was even denser, visibility was less than a meter, and the courtyard downstairs was unseen.
Qinghan took out his phone and checked, muttering, "The weather forecast only mentioned heavy rain."
"You’re wise, the highway must be closed, with this eerie weather, walking might even lead you into a ditch. It’s best to find a place to surf the internet."
"That’s the most important part of what you said, right?" Qinghan shook his head with a smile, sitting on the sofa with his phone.
"The internet is very useful, you can find information, like the nine-grid compass, raising fish in stagnant water, and causes of episodic headaches..."
"What have you found?"
"Well... nothing yet, but I’ve posted a request for help on the most popular forum; maybe there’ll be unexpected gains."
"Okay, you wait slowly." Qinghan’s eyes remained fixed on the phone, waving dismissively at me.
I didn’t mind him; I sat back at the computer to continue watching the series, on the screen, a black-clad figure holding a dagger was chasing a fragile girl student. Her long, loose hair covered half of her face, her innocent and simple face was full of tears, her eyes were terrified and desperate, she had lost one of her sandals, and her soles had been rubbed raw.
"Huh?" Watching the student girl on the screen, I suddenly felt she looked familiar, as did the figure in black behind her, just like what I had seen moments ago.
Knock knock knock——
"Sorry to bother you." The knocking from outside was heard again, this time sounding like the innkeeper.
I pressed the pause button and hurried to open the door, and sure enough, it was the innkeeper standing there.
"Sorry, the guest in 205 just told me there’s no water in her room. I came with someone to check, but no one was inside her room. Did you hear her leave?" the innkeeper asked apologetically.
There was a young guy standing next to the innkeeper in work clothes, holding a toolbox.
"No, didn’t hear her leave, given this weather, it’s unlikely she’d go out, unless something happened."
After hearing what I said, the innkeeper hesitated for a moment, then took out the spare room card for 205 and swiped open the door.
Yet, instead of entering, she stood at the doorway to look inside, confirmed there was nobody, and then closed the door again.
"Strange..." the innkeeper muttered with a frown and then gave me an apologetic smile, "Sorry for the disturbance, she might have gone out."
I could guess what the innkeeper found odd: this small building only had one corridor, one staircase, one exit.
So if the girl from 205 left, the innkeeper sitting at the entrance would definitely know.
Moreover, the main door had a voice-prompt electronic bell; when someone opens the door, a voice reminder rings.
Therefore, the girl from 205 probably hasn’t left this building unless... she climbed down from the balcony.
But why would a normal person ignore the stairs and insist on climbing the balcony?
"Hmm?" I shut the door upon returning to the room, suddenly recalling that the floor-to-ceiling window of room 205 was left open.
"What now?" Qinghan finally pulled his eyes from the phone screen, looking at me with befuddlement.
"The girl from 205..." I quickly approached the computer, resumed playing the drama I was watching earlier, but strangely, the victim student girl’s face on the screen was different, not the same as what I saw earlier.
"Li Jianan? Li Jianan!" The innkeeper’s voice came from downstairs, sounding quite urgent.
I opened the balcony’s floor-to-ceiling window, stepping out onto it to look downstairs, there was a beam of strong light flickering around in the thick fog, I’m quite familiar with it, it was the beam from a powerful flashlight.
Standing on the balcony, I heard from a corner of the courtyard a cheerful melody; it should be a cellphone’s ringtone.
The innkeeper was shouting, searching, approaching the phone, but the phone’s owner was not there.
This Li Jianan is the guest in room 205, her phone was outside, indicating she’s also out there, the innkeeper must have failed to find her, attempting to contact her by phone, only to hear music from the courtyard.
"Chen, is the master who predicted your fortune still around? I’d like to invite him to tell me what kind of fate keeps drawing me into bizarre events." I closed the floor-to-ceiling window, turning back to find Qinghan. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
"Didn’t you call it feudal superstitions? Besides, he’s already retired due to injury."
"Fortune-telling involves injuries?"
"His predictions were too accurate, got beaten severely."
"...Well, okay, but this inn really has some strangeness. I just saw 205’s girl being chased by a man in black with a knife on the computer, and then she disappeared, her phone ended up in the courtyard, but she’s nowhere to be found." I leaned toward Qinghan, hoping to catch his attention, "The man in black chasing her is the same one I told you about, what do we do? It’s terrifying!"
Qinghan was attentive initially, but upon hearing my last sentence, he immediately said, "If there really is a serial killer, the safest person would be you."
"I am currently in a weak phase, you have great skills, hurry and catch him."
"If there’s a criminal case, I will call the police." Qinghan obviously didn’t believe me.
"Call the police? What police car can come in this weather! Don’t blame me for not warning you, I’m doing my best here." The life or death of strangers shouldn’t concern me; however, perceiving danger, I might as well warn. After all, only the living possess a conscience.
Outside, it was as dark as night, even though it was only two in the afternoon, we had to turn on the lights inside.
Half an hour later, the corridor was noisy again; I didn’t go out, but I could hear them arguing through the door.
