The King's Lover-Chapter 535: When She Finds Out
Rose opened the door of her room to see Caius seated with his arms crossed. "You’re late."
"Your Majesty," she said and rushed towards him.
Rose didn’t think about it; she fell onto him in an instant, and Caius unfolded his arms to hold her.
"Did something happen?" he asked with a frown.
She shook her head as she sat across his lap with her head resting in the crook of his neck. Rose could feel herself slowly calm down as she rested against him. She didn’t realize just how agitated she had been until she saw him.
"Where did you go?" he asked with a frown.
"Just an errand," Rose said as she let out a breath. "My maids needed me to confirm something."
"Couldn’t they have brought it to you?"
"It’s fine. I didn’t mind." She stood up and, without showing him her face, walked to the dresser.
Rose checked her reflection and made sure nothing was out of place. With the running around she had done this morning, she wouldn’t be surprised if she looked like a mess. Thankfully, she didn’t. She only needed to adjust her crown and brush her hair.
"Shall we?" she said and turned around, only to see that Caius was already next to her.
He stared at her suspiciously, and Rose feared he might pester, but he only smiled and offered her his elbow. Rose smiled back as she accepted it.
"When do you intend to go see your father?" he asked as they walked out of her room.
"After breakfast," she replied.
"Will you be back before lunch?" Caius asked with all seriousness.
"Of course not, Your Majesty."
Caius narrowed his eyes but didn’t comment, and this made Rose chuckle.
"I will be back before dinner," she offered.
"Better, else I might have to come get you myself."
"You wouldn’t dare," she exclaimed.
"Would you like to put that to a test?"
"No," Rose shook her head as she chuckled.
"That’s what I—"
"Your Majesties," Prince Gayle called.
Rose and Caius immediately turned to their left to see Prince Gayle bowing.
"Prince Gayle," Caius said.
Rose felt a need to reply, but she didn’t think she could refer to Prince Gayle casually, so she simply said, "Your Highness."
At first, she thought of not replying, as Caius had also spoken, but Prince Gayle had greeted both of them; it would be rude of her not to acknowledge him.
"Will you be attending the council meeting today?" Caius asked.
"Of course, Your Majesty," he replied and let his eyes flutter towards Rose’s direction, but it was only briefly, so one wouldn’t think much of it. He bowed before walking ahead of them.
"I am the topic of this meeting, aren’t I?" Rose asked.
Caius glanced at her. "Are you worried?" he asked softly.
"No," she simply stated.
There was a document in the Royal vault that said she was married to the King, and with this crown on her head, Rose had absolutely no reason to be worried.
"You’re the one I am worried about," she added before Caius could say anything.
He frowned. "How so?"
"I am not the one who has to argue with a whole council."
"Argue?" Caius scoffed. "There is nothing to argue about. We are legally married. This is simply a formality."
"If you say so," Rose said as casually as possible but she was smiling hard enough for it to hurt.
They arrived at the dining hall, and everyone was already seated. Rose was surprised to see the Queen. Not only was she in attendance but she was also in her proper seat.
She looked towards the door as they stepped in, and Rose could see Violeta’s surprised expression at her entrance, but her surprise quickly changed to an evil smile.
Rose realized the Queen didn’t expect her to show up for breakfast because her maids were unavailable. She almost laughed at the idea. Did the Queen think she couldn’t dress herself?
Most of her dresses required help, but there were a few that didn’t and were still elegant enough. She didn’t need maids to get ready for the day.
Another thing she realized was that news of what she did in the servants’ quarters and the Royal kitchen hadn’t reached the Queen’s ears.
Rose was smirking back before she realized it. The Queen was sitting across from her, thinking she had the upper hand, while Rose had already offset her entire plan.
Violeta is not going to be pleased when she finds out.
Rose had to stop herself from laughing as Caius led her to her seat. Too bad she wouldn’t be here to see the old hag’s outburst; she would be with her father, telling him the good news.
"Son," Violeta said to Caius as he sat down.
Caius planned to ignore his mother, but Rose squeezed his arm. "Good morning, Mother," he said coldly.
She beamed at him, and Rose snickered to herself, knowing that Caius was only answering his mother because of her.
"Did you rest well?" she asked sweetly while glaring at Rose, who met her stare without any look of disrespect.
There was no need for that; the old hag would soon discover her present. Rose had to consciously keep her thoughts out of her expression, else she wouldn’t stop smiling.
"Yes, Mother."
Violeta didn’t get the hint and tried to speak to her son on multiple occasions while completely ignoring Rose. Rose didn’t even try to get Caius’s attention this time. She simply ate her meal in silence.
Violeta still wouldn’t stop speaking to her son even after breakfast had ended, and Rose feared the old hag might follow them out of the dining room, but surprisingly, she didn’t.
By the end of breakfast, Caius was distracted, and he couldn’t even follow her to her bedroom. He simply gave her instructions to take Maximus on her way out before he and Rylen headed the other way.
Rose felt a bit weird as she had to head to her bedroom by herself, but surprisingly, she made it to the door without any incident, nor did she run into Caira, who had left just before her and Caius did.
She opened her bedroom door to see her ladies-in-waiting. They rushed towards her and wrapped her in a tight hug as they both screamed their thanks.
