Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Fortifying the Future

The factory buzzed with activity as the group worked to transform the worn-down stronghold into a secure base. The victory against the Shadows had brought temporary relief, but Mallory knew it wouldn’t last long.

They had seen the Shadows’ strength firsthand, and there was no guarantee they wouldn’t return with greater force. If this factory was going to be their new home, it needed to be fortified to withstand any future attacks.

Mallory stood in what was once the factory’s loading dock, her arms crossed as she surveyed the area. Greg and Alex were arguing over how to best barricade the large entrance.

"I’m telling you, we need to use the scrap metal," Greg said, pointing to a pile of rusted sheets nearby.

"And I’m telling you," Alex countered, waving a half-built contraption in his hand, "this place needs booby traps. No one’s going to charge in if we’ve got a few of these bad boys waiting for them!"

"Alex, that looks like a slingshot made by a drunk engineer," Mallory said, raising an eyebrow.

"It’s called innovation!" Alex shot back. "You’ll thank me when it pelts intruders with rotten tomatoes and firecrackers."

Mallory pinched the bridge of her nose. "Let’s compromise. Greg, start reinforcing the entrance with scrap metal. Alex, set up your... ’innovations’ on the outer perimeter. The more deterrents, the better."

"Fine," Alex muttered, stomping off. "But when this works, I expect a public apology."

Mallory chuckled as Greg gave her a knowing look. "You’ve got the patience of a saint dealing with him."

"I’ve had practice," she replied, a small smile playing on her lips.

By midday, progress was evident. Ryder and Harper had returned from a supply run, bringing tools, food, and medical supplies they’d scavenged from nearby stores. Blinky, now an integral member of the team, was helping in its own way—dragging heavy objects across the floor with its gelatinous body and occasionally devouring stray rats.

"Good job, Blinky," Mallory said as the creature dropped a sack of nails at her feet. It let out a pleased gurgle, then slithered off to find more to do.

"I still can’t believe that thing," Harper said, watching Blinky with a mix of awe and wariness.

"It’s part of the family now," Mallory replied. "And honestly, it’s been more useful than half of us."

Greg chuckled. "Speak for yourself. I’m a treasure."

Mallory rolled her eyes but didn’t disagree.

As the day wore on, Mallory gathered the group in the factory’s main hall to discuss their long-term plans. The room had been cleared of debris and repurposed as a central meeting space, with rows of mismatched chairs arranged in a semicircle.

"First things first," Mallory began, standing at the front. "We need to make this place self-sufficient. That means finding a reliable water source, growing food, and figuring out how to generate power without relying on scavenged fuel."

"We can rig up a water filtration system," Greg suggested. "There’s a river not far from here."

"And what about hydroponics?" Harper added. "I saw some equipment in the storage rooms. We could use it to grow crops indoors."

"Good ideas," Mallory said, nodding. "Let’s prioritize those. What about defenses? The Shadows know this place now, and we can’t assume they won’t come back."

"I’ve got a few surprises in the works," Alex piped up from the back.

"Should I be worried?" Mallory asked.

"Probably," Greg muttered under his breath, earning a laugh from the group.

---

As the meeting wrapped up, Mallory lingered in the hall, her thoughts racing. She was proud of how far they’d come, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that their challenges were only beginning.

Greg approached her, his expression uncharacteristically serious. "You okay?"

"Just thinking," she admitted. "About everything we still have to do. About what’s out there."

"Whatever it is, we’ll handle it," Greg said. "We always do."

His confidence was reassuring, and for a moment, Mallory allowed herself to believe it.

---

That night, as the group settled in for some much-needed rest, a loud crash jolted everyone awake.

"What now?" Alex groaned, stumbling out of his makeshift bunk.

The noise had come from the western side of the factory, where Ryder had been assigned to keep watch. Mallory grabbed her weapon and led the group toward the commotion, her heart pounding.

When they arrived, they found Ryder standing in front of a massive hole in the wall, his face a mixture of shock and embarrassment.

"I swear, it wasn’t my fault!" he said, holding up his hands defensively.

"What happened?" Mallory demanded.

"It was... uh... Blinky," Ryder admitted, pointing to the blob creature, which was sitting innocently nearby.

Blinky gurgled, as if to say, Who, me?

"What did Blinky do?" Greg asked, struggling to keep a straight face.

"I don’t know!" Ryder exclaimed. "One second it was chasing a rat, and the next, it barreled through the wall like it was made of paper!"

The group stared at Blinky, who gurgled again, clearly pleased with itself.

"Well," Alex said after a long pause, "at least we know it’s effective against intruders."

Despite the situation, Mallory couldn’t help but laugh. "Let’s just patch this up before someone else gets any ideas."

---

The following day was spent repairing the wall and making additional reinforcements. Blinky, apparently unaware of the chaos it had caused, continued to help in its own peculiar way, dragging supplies and occasionally swallowing tools.

By evening, the factory was starting to feel like a proper base. The defenses were stronger, the supplies were organized, and the group was beginning to settle into a routine.

Mallory sat on the roof with Greg and Alex, watching the sun set over the city. For the first time in a long while, she felt a glimmer of hope.

"Think we’ll make it?" Greg asked, breaking the silence.

"I think we have a chance, and we have to make sure of that" Mallory replied.

"That’s good enough for me," Alex said, stretching out with a grin.
