Chapter 40: Chapter 36: The Evil Spirit Knight Appears

The former ultimate villain, the "Evil Spirit Wizard" Zorn Corick.

He had been a madman, constantly sacrificing villages and towns. He even unleashed terrible Catastrophe Power, transforming a vibrant city-state into a City of Calamity and Death.

His goal was to create a Catastrophe environment, allowing him to leverage more power from the Calamity Origin amidst death and disaster.

It was highly efficient, to be sure.

But the problem was that it also made him a target for everyone.

He was ambushed and attacked in a joint strike by the Church and the Esoteric Sect.

Although he managed a narrow escape, he was severely wounded and his Evil Witch Spirituality suffered a devastating blow.

Left with no other choice, he could only resort to even more intense blood sacrifices and slaughter.

In return, he was hunted by more powerful enemies and sustained even graver injuries.

After a few rounds of this tug-of-war, he hadn’t gained anything. In fact, he’d suffered a massive net loss.

The Zorn of today, however, was playing the long game—a strategy of slow, sustainable growth.

The gains weren’t as dramatic or as quick, but it had the advantage of being safe.

No one would notice Zorn, quietly leveraging power from the shadows.

And even if they did, they wouldn’t care.

To the outside world, he was just a "weak Evil Spirit."

Besides, using Catastrophe to leverage power was only one of the ways Zorn could grow stronger.

The "Steam Factory" he was currently planning was a perfectly legitimate path forward.

Beyond that, Zorn had many other unconventional tricks up his sleeve.

Relying on a single path could easily corner you.

If you want to become a terrifying Evil God, you have to make your path ever wider.

As the hidden ritual trap began to function, a constant stream of grey rats was drawn in.

There were even some mutated grey rats among them.

This was where the benefit of the "Spiritual Ratman Crystal Core" Zorn had used became apparent. The effect was far better than that of an ordinary ritual trap.

In just a short while, over a dozen grey rats had been captured by the trap and sacrificed.

The writhing Catastrophe Power that permeated the air was also being constantly absorbed.

The swirling Black Mist grew steadily and methodically.

Sensing the steadily growing Black Mist, Zorn let out a soft breath.

’Once I’ve leveraged enough Black Mist, I can establish my Spiritual Realm in the Calamity Origin Land.’

’That will be my personal domain in the Land of Origin, an exclusive zone no one can breach.’

’By the time others realize they can claim territory here, I’ll have already taken a significant amount.’

’A powerful Spiritual Realm will let me evade many potent divinations, probes, and scrying attempts, allowing me to better conceal myself.’

’All in all, the benefits of a Spiritual Realm are immense.’

’Before I manage to construct a Spiritual Realm, controlling this swirling Black Mist will allow me to awaken some powerful and practical Dark Extraordinary Witchcraft ahead of schedule when I level up.’

Just as Zorn was contemplating which powerful Extraordinary Witchcraft he could leverage with the Black Mist, the swirling cloud of Black Mist before him silently dissipated.

’Oh? Is someone coming?’

A thought flickered through his mind.

It was a special kind of trap; it would disperse and cease hunting the moment a powerful spiritual presence drew near.

It would only reactivate once that presence had departed.

Aside from the occasional drip of water and the squeaking of grey rats, the area fell silent.

TAP, TAP, TAP...

Footsteps echoed, growing closer.

It was more than one person. It sounded as if they were converging on this spot from two directions.

Zorn suppressed his aura and pressed himself into a corner untouched by the light of the Blue Glow Moss, hiding himself perfectly in the darkness.

A moment later, the footsteps stopped.

"Uncle Morinson!"

A clear, sharp voice called out.

"Hmph."

A deep, nasal grunt came in response.

After a long moment of silence, the gruff voice finally spoke.

"Viscount Brin’s shipment was stolen."

"I... I’ve already heard the news from them," the younger voice replied.

"Uncle Morinson, are there any other sources for resources?"

In response to the question, the silent darkness offered no answer, only the faint squeaking of rats.

"Yesterday, the ’banquet’ was held again."

The clearer voice began to recount, his speech halting at first.

"She was a very young girl, maybe thirteen or fourteen. Her body was so soft she could barely stand, and she was crying her heart out."

"I slit her throat with my knife. Just as I thought, a virgin’s blood... is exceptionally sweet."

The clear voice began to grow shrill and excited.

"But those damned rats... the way they look at me is as if they’re looking at food."

"How... dare they!"

His roar exploded like a thunderclap.

"I am a great Evil Spirit Knight! I heed the call of a great being and wield an unparalleled, terrifying power."

"Every time I sleep, I can hear the great Lord Egunus calling to me, whispering in my ear."

"Down here in the sewers, I can feel the darkness nourishing my very soul. With every grey rat I devour, my power grows stronger. I can see, hear, and smell the malice those damned Rat Kings hold for me. How dare those filthy mongrels harbor ill will toward me! I’ll kill them all! I’ll devour every last one of them! I am the true heir to the Bloodline Power! I am the supreme Knight who wields the Forbidden Power! Everyone who stands in my way will die... they... will... all... die..."

As he spoke, his voice grew increasingly excited, crazed, and hysterical.

A terrifying Evil Energy even began to permeate the air, spreading out in waves that made the Blue Glow Moss sway.

From the looks of it, his mental state was perfectly sound!

In his dark corner, Zorn quietly sensed the surge of that sinister power and came to a realization.

’So this is the one favored by the Forbidden Bloodline—the Evil Spirit Knight!’

’Hmm... a fellow boss has shown up.’

’But it looks like he’s already been severely corrupted!’ 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

’Instead of developing his own inner strength, he’s chosen to worship one of the Upper Rankers of the Forbidden Bloodline.’

’How ignorant and foolish!’

As these thoughts ran through his mind, Zorn lightly rubbed his brow.

This wasn’t surprising.

Extraordinary Power had only just begun to emerge, and no one had yet truly witnessed the terror of the Evil Spirits born from the remains of the Evil God, Egunus.

Once the World-level ultimate boss, "Evil Spirit Wizard" Zorn Corick, became the spokesman for the Evil God and orchestrated a few more city-state-level preludes to Calamity on the Holy Land Continent, then everyone would come to know the terror of Egunus from the ancient eons!

But right now, the tide of steam had only just begun to swell.

The Evil Spirit Sequence derived from Egunus had only recently come into being; it was not yet time for it to flex its power.

"Calm down... Bucky!" the deep voice interjected.

The agitated power roiling off the Evil Spirit Knight named Bucky gradually subsided.

"The resources were stolen this time, so we couldn’t make the purchase. However, I’ve already contacted new sellers who have some good stock on hand."

"You just need to wait a few more days... Just a few more days, and I’ll get the resources for you."

"Also..."

The deep voice paused before continuing.

"I heard from them that the thief this time seems to have been another Evil Spirit."

This immediately caught the Evil Spirit Knight’s attention.

"Another Evil Spirit?" he asked urgently.

"Uncle Morinson, can we catch him?"

"I desperately need another piece of Lord Egunus’s flesh and blood. I’m willing... willing to pay any price for it."

The man in the darkness shook his head helplessly.

"He’s an extremely cunning one."

"From his revelation rite, we could tell that his ’Evil Spirit Traits’ are very weak. They’re nothing compared to yours, Bucky."

"Among your kind, he’s just an afterthought."

"But he used the storm and some kind of interference to block our scrying."

"The chances of catching him are slim to none."

"But don’t you worry, Bucky," the deep-voiced man said reassuringly.

"According to my sources, there are several other hidden Evil Spirit Sequences in Ogrande City."

"They’re all lying dormant in the shadows, just waiting to make their move."

"And they’re all trying to find each other."

"However, the advantage is yours for now."

"The power leveraged by the Forbidden Bloodline is terrifying. It makes the Calamity here squirm, turning this place into a breeding ground that nourishes you."

"This is your home turf. More than that, it’s your opportunity."

"Grow stronger in this Catastrophe. When its power reaches its peak, you must reveal yourself in Ogrande City and carve your own deep and indelible Calamity Sacred Mark."

"A unique Calamity Sacred Mark that belongs only to you."

"Just like that other fellow used Ogrande City as his canvas to carve a Sacred Mark with his revelation rite."

"This is your Catastrophe Power. No one is better suited than you to write this Chapter of death!"

"Once you’ve built a sufficient advantage, you’ll have earned the right to hunt, devour, and absorb the other Evil Spirits... like those weak ones!"
