Chapter 124: Twenty-Four Hours

Late that night, Katherine and I are exhausted.

We’re sitting on the floor of our apartment. Chinese takeout containers were spread around us. Too tired to sit at the table like civilized people.

"This is glamorous," Katherine says, gesturing to the mess. "Billionaire crime fighters eating lo mein on the floor."

Despite everything, I smile. "We’re very sophisticated."

"Remember when I thought your life was all champagne and fancy restaurants? Hotels and clubs?"

"It was. Then I met you and dragged you into chaos."

"You love the chaos."

"I love you." I steal a dumpling from her container. "The chaos is just a bonus."

"Hey! That was mine!"

"Community property. We’re engaged."

"That’s not how engagement works!" She’s laughing now, trying to steal it back.

We’re wrestling over dumplings like children. It’s ridiculous, but exactly what we need after the day we’ve had.

She wins and pops the dumpling in her mouth victoriously.

"I let you win," I say.

"Sure you did."

I pull her close and kiss her. She tastes like soy sauce and feels like home.

"We’re going to survive this," I tell her.

"Promise?"

"Promise. We’re annoyingly resilient, remember?"

"I remember."

We’re tangled together on the floor when my phone rings.

Ted.

"I found her. Diane’s exact location."

Katherine and I both sit up.

"Where?"

"Tribeca. It’s a penthouse apartment registered under the name ’Diana Bridges.’"

"Bridges," Katherine repeats. "Like Victoria Bridges. Vivian Cross’s real name."

"Probably not a coincidence," Ted says. "She’s using variations of former identities, but here’s the thing-"

"What?"

"The apartment’s been empty for three days. Security cameras show her leaving but never returning."

My stomach drops. "Where did she go?"

"That’s the problem, she disappeared. No credit card activity, no phone pings, and no digital footprint. It’s like she vanished."

Katherine’s face goes pale. "She knows we’re coming, and she set a trap."

"Or," Ted’s voice is grim, "she’s already executing her endgame. And we’re too late to stop it."

We had an explosion. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

It was distant, in the direction of downtown.

Katherine and I ran to the window and saw smoke rising - black and thick.

From the direction of...

"No," Katherine whispers.

The consulting firm’s building. Her office. Her life’s work.

Burning.

My phone buzzes with a text from an unknown number.

I already know who it is.

Told you I’d destroy everything. Your clients are dying. Your business is burning, and your reputation is ruined. What’s left, Tony? What else can I take from you? -Diane

She sends another text.

Oh, wait. I know. How about everything you love? Starting with Katherine’s ability to save anyone. Watch her break, watch her blame herself, and watch her destroy herself with guilt. That’s the real revenge. -Diane

Katherine’s phone is buzzing too, and she checks it.

Her face goes white.

"What?" I ask.

She shows me.

It’s the photo of the consulting firm building engulfed in flames with the caption: Your life’s work. Gone. Everyone you helped is dead or dying. You couldn’t save them. You can’t save anyone, not even yourself. -Diane

Katherine’s shaking.

"She’s right," she whispers. "I couldn’t save them. I tried, and I failed, and they’re all dead because of me."

"Katherine, no-"

"Seventeen dead now, Tony. Seventeen people who trusted me. Who believed me when I promised them safety. And where are they? Dead. Because I wasn’t good enough, smart enough, and fast enough."

"This is Diane. She’s doing this, not you. Don’t you blame yourself for this"

"But they’re still dead!"

She’s crying now and breaking, which is exactly what Diane wants.

And I don’t know how to fix it.

My phone rings again. It’s Luca.

"The consulting firm building. Fire department’s there, but it’s bad - structural damage. It’s a total loss."

"Anyone inside?"

"No. It’s after hours. But, Tony, this was a professional accelerant. Someone wanted maximum damage."

"Diane."

"Has to be."

After we hang up, I look at Katherine. She’s staring at the smoke rising downtown.

Her dream, her passion, and her purpose.

Burning.

"We rebuild," I say. "We’ll rebuild the firm, protect the remaining clients, and stop Diane. We can-"

My phone rings again. It’s Ted, and his voice sounded urgent.

"Tony, you need to see this. Diane just posted something on the dark web, and it’s not hidden. It’s for the public view."

"What?"

"A video of her in what looks like a bunker or safe room. With enough weapons and supplies for a siege."

He sends the link. I pull it up.

Diane’s face fills the screen - cold and smiling.

"Hello, Tony. Katherine. Congratulations on finding my apartment. Unfortunately, I’m not there. I’m somewhere much safer. Somewhere you’ll never find me but don’t worry. I’m not done with you yet. In fact, I’m just getting started.

Twenty-four hours. That’s how long you have. To save what’s left of your lives. Your businesses, your reputations, and your sanity.

Because in twenty-four hours, I’m releasing everything. Every crime Tony’s family ever committed, every person Angelo Torrino killed, and every dirty secret the Marvin empire ever buried."

And Katherine? Your client list was just the beginning. I have files on everyone you’ve ever helped. Every secret they told you and every crime they confessed. I’m releasing that too."

The people you ’saved’? They’ll go back to prison. Because you promised confidentiality. And I’m going to break that promise for you.

Twenty-four hours. Tick tock."

The video ends.

Katherine and I stare at each other in horror.

"She has our confidential files," Katherine whispers. "Everything our clients told us in confidence. This was protected information."

"If she releases that-"

"They all go back to prison. Everyone we helped, everything we built. Totally destroyed."

We have twenty-four hours.

To stop a ghost.

To save forty-seven people.

To salvage our reputations.

To prevent total destruction.

And we don’t even know where Diane is.

My phone buzzes one more time and it was a final text from Diane.

Oh, and Tony? Tell Katherine I’m sorry about her building, but she should know that was just property. Next, I burn something she actually cares about. See you in twenty-four hours. -Diane

The smoke downtown grows thicker.

Katherine’s life’s work was reduced to ash.

And somewhere, Diane Reece is watching.

Smiling.

Winning.
