Chapter 44: Riftfall Bastion – The Labyrinth of Shadows

Into the Unknown

The fortress shifted around them, its walls pulsing as if alive. Shadows flickered unnaturally, stretching and twisting with each unstable pulse of Rift energy. Ethan felt the pressure in his skull—a familiar sensation, a warning from the Rift itself.

"It’s adapting to us."

Selene moved beside him, her golden aura flickering as she scanned the warped corridor ahead. "The structure is unstable. We need to keep moving before it locks us in."

Kieran exhaled sharply, shaking off the impact of their last battle. "Yeah, because that guy wasn’t bad enough—now we’re in a damn maze?"

Nefera’s chains hummed softly, sensing the distortion. "This place was designed to trap intruders. If we don’t find the core soon, we’re done."

Orion’s voice crackled over the comms. "Team Beta, be advised—something’s interfering with our readings. We’re losing track of your position."

Ethan tapped his earpiece. "What do you mean losing?"

"The fortress is shifting. You might be—" The transmission cut off, replaced by a sharp burst of static.

Mia cursed under her breath. "Great. We’re blind."

Ethan clenched his jaw. "Then we navigate the old way—through instinct." His shadows reached out, brushing against the shifting walls. They pulsed with something ancient, something aware.

And then—they attacked.

The walls split open, Rift-forged constructs spilling out like nightmares given form. Their bodies flickered between reality and void, their eyes hollow, mouths stretched in silent screams.

"Contact!" Selene shouted, raising a radiant shield.

Ethan drew his blade, shadows snapping into place around him. "Hold formation!"

---

The Rift’s Defenders

The first construct lunged, its form stretching unnaturally as it slashed at Kieran with elongated claws of raw energy.

Kieran barely dodged, rolling under its attack before driving a kinetic punch into its center. The blow shattered its outer shell, but instead of collapsing, the creature reformed instantly.

"What the hell?!" Kieran cursed.

"They regenerate," Isolde’s voice cut in over the comms. "You need to disrupt their Rift connection—target their cores."

Mia was already moving. She darted forward, flipping over one construct and burying her dagger into the glowing symbol on its chest. The creature convulsed violently before disintegrating into black mist.

"That’s one," she breathed. "Who’s next?"

Nefera’s chains lashed out, wrapping around another construct and ripping its core apart, sending a shockwave through the corridor.

Selene unleashed a radiant blast, vaporizing two of them in an explosion of light.

Ethan moved like a phantom, teleporting behind the largest construct and plunging his shadow-infused blade into its core. The creature writhed before shattering into a burst of darkness.

For a moment, silence settled.

Then, the fortress shifted again—and the path ahead twisted into a new formation.

Mia exhaled, shaking out her wrists. "It’s toying with us."

Selene’s expression was grim. "Then we need to stop playing by its rules."

Ethan stepped forward. "We head for the Rift core. Now."

---

The Lost Chamber

The corridor expanded into a vast chamber, its ceiling lost in darkness. At the center stood a monolithic Rift gateway, its surface swirling with fractured reflections of other realities.

And in front of it—a pedestal holding a sealed artifact, pulsing with faint silver light.

Nefera’s breath hitched. "That’s not just any artifact... That’s ancient."

Ethan stepped closer, shadows brushing against the air around it. The moment his energy made contact, a shockwave rippled outward, shaking the chamber.

Orion’s voice finally came through over the comms. "Ethan! Whatever you just touched, it triggered—"

The transmission cut again as a figure stepped out of the Rift gateway.

A man, cloaked in flowing obsidian robes, his presence drenched in Rift energy. His eyes glowed with unnatural light, and his voice was almost familiar.

"I was wondering when you’d arrive."

Selene tensed beside Ethan. "Who the hell—"

The figure lifted his hood, revealing a face Ethan never expected to see again.

Nathaniel Cross.

---

The Return of the Lost

Silence crashed into the room.

Ethan’s breath caught in his throat. "No... you’re—"

Nathaniel’s eyes burned with Rift corruption, but his expression was calm. "Dead? Yes. And no."

Selene’s hand tightened on her blade, her voice a whisper of disbelief. "Nathaniel..."

Nefera stepped back, her chains rattling. "This is impossible."

Nathaniel looked at Ethan, studying him carefully. "You’ve grown stronger. But you still don’t understand, do you?"

Ethan’s shadows flickered violently. "You sacrificed yourself! I watched you die!"

Nathaniel exhaled slowly. "And yet, here I am." He gestured to the artifact on the pedestal. "This is the key to everything. The reason I came back."

Mia, unusually quiet, narrowed her eyes. "Came back? From where?"

Nathaniel’s gaze flickered toward the Rift gateway. "From the other side."

Selene stepped forward, her expression conflicted. "If you’re really Nathaniel... then prove it."

Nathaniel’s expression softened. "Selene, I—"

Then Orion’s voice cut in, sharp and urgent: "Ethan, step away from him. NOW."

Ethan’s eyes snapped to the side. "What?"

Orion’s tone was grim. "Whatever you think that is—it’s not your father."

Nathaniel smiled faintly. "That’s where you’re wrong."

The Rift gateway surged, and the chamber descended into chaos.

The Final Stand 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Nathaniel moved first, teleporting with unnatural speed. Shadows and Rift energy coiled around his form, a fusion of darkness and unstable power.

Ethan barely raised his sword in time to block a strike that sent him flying.

Selene’s golden aura flared as she launched an energy spear, but Nathaniel deflected it effortlessly, his voice eerily calm. "You always relied too much on the light, Selene."

Kieran rushed forward, his gauntlets charged with kinetic force, but Nathaniel simply redirected his momentum, sending him crashing into a pillar.

Mia hesitated, her grip on her dagger tightening. Her eyes darted toward the Rift gateway—then toward Nathaniel.

And Ethan noticed.

"She’s hesitating."

Nathaniel locked eyes with Mia. "You understand, don’t you?" His voice was quiet, enticing. "You’ve felt it—the Rift calling to you. You know this war isn’t as simple as they want you to believe."

Ethan’s stomach turned cold.

Mia lowered her blade—just slightly.

And then, the fortress trembled violently.

The Rift energy in the chamber began spiraling out of control, arcs of power fracturing reality itself. Nathaniel stepped back toward the gateway, his form flickering between worlds.

"You’re not ready yet," he said softly. "But soon, you will be."

With a final surge of dark light, he vanished into the Rift—just as the chamber began collapsing.

Ethan barely had time to register what had happened before Selene grabbed his arm.

"Move!"

The team raced for the exit, the fortress imploding around them.

And all Ethan could hear was Nathaniel’s final words:

"You’re not ready yet. But soon, you will be."
