The Masked Virtuoso-Chapter 57: The Fractured Path
A New Mission Begins
The tension in Haven was suffocating. Even after Ethan’s return from the void, no one could shake the unease lingering in the air. The war room was silent except for the low hum of the holo-table, its blue light casting eerie shadows over the team’s faces.
Ethan stood at the center, arms crossed, golden-shadow energy still faintly flickering at his fingertips. He had changed—again. Stronger, more in control. But the Rift’s warning still echoed in his mind.
Mia’s voice broke the silence. "So, what’s the plan?"
Selene exhaled slowly. "Isolde. We track her down, we get her back."
Kieran tapped rapidly on his console. "Easier said than done. There’s been no comms from her since the battle. It’s like she vanished off the grid."
Orion, leaning against the wall, arms crossed, spoke up. "Then we assume the worst." His voice was grim. "She was taken."
Ethan’s jaw tightened. He had been too caught up in his own battle—too caught up in himself. Now, Isolde was missing, and they had no idea who had her.
"We find her," Ethan said, his tone final. "Whatever it takes."
Selene nodded. "Then we move now."
Mia placed a hand on the holo-table, her expression serious. "Alright. Let’s go hunting."

Isolde’s Captivity
Pain.
It was a distant thing, dulled by whatever substance they had injected into her veins. Isolde’s vision swam as she struggled against the restraints holding her in place.
A cold, sterile lab surrounded her—its walls lined with equipment that hummed with unnatural energy. She wasn’t alone.
A figure stood in front of her, half-shrouded in darkness. Their face was obscured by a mask that flickered, shifting between different appearances—human, inhuman, something else entirely.
The figure tilted their head. "You’re awake."
Isolde forced a smirk despite the pain. "Lucky me."
The figure stepped closer, their presence suffocating. "Tell me, Isolde—how well do you truly know Ethan Cross?"
The words sent a chill down her spine. "What the hell are you talking about?"
The figure didn’t answer. Instead, they raised a hand—and the walls around her changed.
Suddenly, she wasn’t in the lab anymore.
She was standing in a ruined city. Fire consumed the sky, the ground cracked open, and at the center of it all—stood Ethan.
But this wasn’t the Ethan she knew.
This Ethan’s eyes were empty voids. His presence alone warped reality. The air around him trembled under the weight of something incomprehensible.
And in his hand—was Mia’s lifeless body.
Isolde staggered back. "No... this isn’t real."
The figure’s voice was almost gentle. "It is not a question of if, Isolde."
They stepped closer, and the ruined city faded, replaced by darkness.
"It is a question of when."

The Hunt for Isolde
Back in Haven, the team moved fast.
Kieran worked through endless layers of security, breaking into Council databases, tracking energy signatures—anything that might lead them to Isolde.
Selene paced behind him, arms crossed. "Tell me you found something."
Kieran frowned. "It’s weird—there’s no physical trace of her, but..." He tapped the screen. "I picked up something else. A distortion. Like reality itself shifted where she was last seen."
Mia’s eyes narrowed. "That’s not just Rift energy, is it?"
Kieran shook his head. "No. It’s something new."
Ethan, standing near the back, finally spoke. "Then we go there."
Orion exhaled sharply. "And if it’s a trap?"
Ethan turned to face him, his golden-shadow aura pulsing once.
"Then we spring it."
---
Into the Unknown
The transport ship cut through the night sky, slicing toward the last known location of Isolde.
Inside, the tension was thick enough to suffocate.
Ethan stood near the window, arms crossed, his golden-shadow energy pulsing faintly at his fingertips. He had barely spoken since they left Haven.
Selene watched him from across the cabin. "You ready for this?"
Ethan didn’t turn. "Doesn’t matter. We’re going."
Mia tightened her grip on her dagger. "We’ll find her."
Orion leaned against the wall, adjusting the strap on his rifle. "And if it’s a trap?"
Kieran, seated at the console, let out a nervous chuckle. "Oh, it’s definitely a trap."
No one laughed. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
The ship’s warning system beeped—red lights flashing across the dashboard.
"Dropping out of stealth mode," Kieran announced, his tone shifting to something more serious. "Something’s waiting for us down there."
Ethan’s voice was calm. "Then we meet it head-on."
Outside the window, a storm raged.
Not a natural storm.
A distortion in reality itself.
And at its center... a doorway.
---
The Forgotten Facility
The landing was rough—turbulence rocking the ship as it forced its way through the anomaly.
As soon as the doors opened, the team moved fast.
The facility was ancient—cracked metal walls lined with flickering blue lights, corridors stretching into endless darkness. The air hummed with unstable energy, warping like the Rift but... different.
Selene ran her fingers across the nearest wall. "This tech... it’s not Council-made."
Orion knelt near a discarded security drone, its frame half-melted. "It’s not government, either."
Kieran scanned the area, his visor glowing. "I’m picking up weird energy spikes. Like... reality’s shifting in random places."
Mia narrowed her eyes. "This place shouldn’t exist."
Ethan’s voice was quiet, but absolute. "And yet it does."
Then—
A scream echoed through the halls.
Not human.
Not machine.
Something else.
Something waiting for them.

Isolde’s Breaking Point
Inside her containment cell, Isolde’s mind was unraveling.
Not from pain. Not from fear.
From the visions.
They came in waves, each more terrifying than the last.
She saw Ethan, standing atop a mountain of corpses, shadows curling around his form like a living storm. His voice was distorted, inhuman.
She saw Mia, her blade trembling, tears in her eyes—as she drove it into Ethan’s chest.
She saw Selene, golden light shattered, reaching for someone—before being erased from existence.
She saw Orion, standing alone, a ruined world behind him.
And above it all—
A throne.
A throne made of blackened bones and dying stars.
And sitting upon it...
Was Ethan.
The Forsaken One.
Isolde gasped, her vision snapping back to reality.
The masked figure in front of her tilted their head. "You understand now, don’t you?"
Isolde’s breath was ragged. "No."
The figure took a slow step forward. "You were never meant to stop him."
The lights flickered. The walls trembled.
"You were meant to choose."

First Contact
Back in the facility, the team moved deeper into the corridors. The further they went, the more reality itself seemed to glitch.
The walls flickered. Shadows stretched where they shouldn’t. Time lagged for split seconds.
Then—
Something moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
Ethan turned just in time to catch a blade aimed at his throat.
The impact sent shockwaves through the air. Metal screeched. The entire corridor trembled.
Ethan barely had time to process before the attacker vanished.
Kieran swore. "Did anyone see that?"
Selene’s aura pulsed. "It wasn’t human."
Mia tightened her stance. "It’s still here."
Silence.
Then—
A voice whispered from the darkness.
"You shouldn’t have come."
And then the entire facility came alive.
---
The Labyrinth Awakens
Lights flashed red. The walls shifted—corridors stretching, twisting, morphing.
The facility was no longer just a building.
It was a trap.
Kieran’s console beeped violently. "Guys, I think we just activated something we really shouldn’t have."
The whispering grew louder.
They were not alone.
Selene gritted her teeth. "We need to keep moving."
Mia pointed ahead. "The energy signature—Isolde’s—it’s coming from deeper in."
Ethan clenched his fists. "Then we break through."
And as they ran forward, something followed.
---
Isolde’s Final Warning
Back in the containment cell, the masked figure leaned closer.
"You still believe he can be saved, don’t you?"
Isolde’s jaw clenched. "Ethan is stronger than whatever fate you’re trying to force on him."
The figure chuckled. "Oh, Isolde."
The restraints on her wrists vanished.
The door behind her opened.
The figure took a step back.
"Then prove it."
The walls collapsed.
