The Masked Virtuoso-Chapter 83: A God’s Desperation
The Voices in the Void
Ethan moved through the broken remnants of existence, his golden-shadow flames illuminating the dark void. His team was out there. He had felt their voices—faint, distant, but alive.
As he reached forward with his power, the fractured sky trembled. The universe itself was still unstable, still shifting from his recreation. Reality was fighting against itself.
And then—he saw them.
Suspended in the void, five figures drifted like echoes lost in time.
Mia.
Selene.
Orion.
Kieran.
Nefera.
His team.
Ethan clenched his fists, golden energy surging. They were trapped between existence and nonexistence. He had restored the universe, but they had not fully returned.
He didn’t hesitate.
Golden flames erupted from him, wrapping around each of them, pulling them back into the world.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then—
They gasped awake.
---
The Reunion
Ethan stood before them, golden energy flickering in the void. His team—Mia, Selene, Orion, Kieran, and Nefera—were suspended between existence and oblivion. They had been lost, caught in the space between realities when he rewrote the universe.
Now, it was time to bring them back.
He extended his hand, and golden-shadow flames surged outward, wrapping around each of them. Reality obeyed. The moment his power touched them, their forms stabilized—their existence redefined.
Then—one by one, they gasped awake.
Mia staggered, her breathing ragged. Her hands immediately reached for her daggers—but they weren’t there. She froze, eyes darting around. She wasn’t used to feeling powerless.
Selene held her head, her silver hair falling around her face as she took slow, measured breaths. The Rift’s energy that once flowed through her was gone. Her divine spear, once a symbol of her strength, had vanished.
Orion and Kieran landed on their feet, but their movements were sluggish, disoriented. Kieran’s visor flickered before dimming completely. Orion’s rifle, once connected to Rift-powered technology, sparked once—then faded into silence.
Nefera, however, did not move.
She stood frozen, her dark eyes wide with disbelief. She looked at Ethan like she was seeing a ghost.
For a long moment, no one spoke.
Then—
Mia broke the silence. "...What happened?"
Her voice was quiet, cautious. As if she already knew the answer but wasn’t ready to hear it.
Ethan exhaled. "You’re safe now."
Kieran’s eyes narrowed. "Safe? After everything we’ve been through, that’s all you’re going to say?"
Ethan met his gaze. "After I killed Nihilor... there was nothing left. I had to remake the universe."
Silence.
Selene’s hands trembled. "...You remade reality?"
Ethan nodded. "I had no choice."
Mia’s breathing hitched. "...Then why do we remember?"
Ethan’s jaw tightened. That was the question that haunted him.
Before he could answer—
Nefera’s voice shattered the moment.
"Where’s Isolde?"
Ethan froze.
Mia turned sharply, realization dawning on her face. Selene inhaled sharply. Kieran and Orion tensed.
Ethan’s golden eyes dimmed slightly. "...She was not there when I remade the universe."
Nefera’s hands curled into fists. "...Then bring her back."
Ethan’s gaze flickered. "...I can’t."
Nefera took a step forward. "What do you mean, you can’t?"
Ethan exhaled. "I’ve searched every universe. Every timeline. Every possible outcome." His voice was low, heavy. "She’s gone."
Nefera’s lips parted slightly, her breathing uneven. "No... No, that doesn’t make sense."
Ethan looked away. "Something beyond is stopping it."
Nefera broke.
---
The Figure Beyond Creation
Ethan remembered it clearly.
Ethan had tried.
After Nihilor was erased, after the Rift was destroyed—he had stood at the precipice of creation.
With one thought, he could shape a world without suffering. A world where there was no Rift, no war, no Council.
And so, he tried.
And something stopped him.
The moment he willed it into existence—
Reality locked in place.
Time refused to move.
The golden flames of creation froze mid-motion, as if held in the grasp of an unseen force.
Then—a presence.
A being beyond all things.
It did not step forward. It did not appear in physical form.
It simply was.
And in that moment, Ethan felt something he had not felt in a long time.
Helplessness.
The presence towered beyond existence itself. Not a god. Not a Riftborn.
Something more.
Then—it spoke.
A voice that did not echo, because it had always existed.
"You are not the worthy one for my Obsidian Shard."
Ethan’s breath caught.
Before he could react—
The entire fabric of existence collapsed around him.
And he was cast back into the new universe.
---
Nefera’s voice cracked.
"Then why didn’t you try again?!"
Ethan turned to her, his golden flames flickering.
Nefera shook with anger, with grief.
"You can create anything. You can rewrite existence itself. You’re Ethan—the strongest being in the universe!" Her voice broke. "Why couldn’t you just fix everything?"
Ethan’s expression did not change. "...I did."
Nefera staggered back.
"Then why is Isolde gone?"
Ethan closed his eyes. "...Because something beyond is stopping it."
Nefera clenched her fists, her entire body trembling.
Then—she broke down.
She covered her face, shoulders shaking with silent sobs.
"...You’re supposed to be a god."
Ethan did not answer.
Because deep down, he wasn’t sure if he truly was.
---
Restoring Their Families
Nefera’s sobs faded into silence.
Then, Ethan continued.
"The most I could do... was bring everyone back."
Mia lifted her head. "What do you mean?"
Ethan raised his hand.
And in that instant—
Their families returned. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
Mia gasped as her father appeared, alive and whole.
Nefera froze as her family—those she had lost—stood before her.
And then—
Ethan turned.
And for the first time in years—
His father, Nathaniel Cross, was standing there.
Ethan’s golden eyes flickered. He had brought them back.
This was the most he could do.
---
Absorbing All Artifact Powers
Ethan turned to his team, his expression serious.
"Mia. Nefera. Selene." His voice was quiet, yet absolute. "Your artifact powers—I have to take them back."
Mia’s eyes widened. "Why?"
Ethan exhaled. "Because you deserve a normal life."
A golden glow surrounded him as he extended his hand.
And then—all remaining artifact power surged toward him.
Every last trace of Rift energy.
Every ability that once defined them.
All absorbed into Ethan.
Mia gasped as her connection to the daggers vanished.
Nefera staggered as the power she had grown used to faded.
Selene closed her eyes, accepting it.
And just like that—
They were normal again.
The war had ended for them.
And Ethan would carry the burden alone.
---
Ethan stood before his team, one last time.
"It’s time for you all to go home."
Kieran let out a humorless laugh. "That’s it? You save the universe, and now you’re just sending us back?"
Ethan nodded. "Your battle is over."
Mia hesitated. "And what about you?"
Ethan exhaled. "I still have something left to do."
Selene met his gaze. "...Will we see you again?"
Ethan didn’t answer immediately. Then—he smiled.
"Of course."
One by one, they stepped into the golden light of the new world.
Nefera was the last to move.
She turned, her expression unreadable.
Then, in a whisper, she asked—
"...If you see her again, will you bring her back?"
Ethan’s golden eyes burned.
"...Yes."
And with that—
He sent them home.
