The Noble Lady's Rebirth: She just wants to Rest in Peace!-Chapter 14: Aunt and Nephew
Lin Youning had not fallen asleep, so she heard all the movements in the room earlier. Since she was reborn, she couldn’t walk the same path as before. It seemed her aunt was determined to see her together with Gu Yixuan.
What she needed to do now was to change her aunt’s mind, and then prepare for the worst-case scenario. Even if one day she had to marry Gu Yixuan again, she had to secure the greatest benefit for herself.
She absolutely couldn’t be led by the nose like a fool in her past life, ending up in such a tragic situation.
Now that she had a direction and a goal, she needed to nurture her health well before taking action.
Filled with determination, Lin Youning felt much brighter at heart. However, her current body was still too frail, and she fell back into a deep sleep. When she was awakened, it was already dark outside, and it took her a moment to gather her spirit.
Mrs. Gu Sr. had woken up earlier and was drinking the medicine brought by Suyi, her mouth full of bitterness. As Suyi took back the bowl, she saw a small smiling face before her, holding a plate of fruits. "Aunt, eating a plum will make the bitterness go away."
Mrs. Gu Sr.’s heart melted, "Alright, Aunt will eat."
The plum in her mouth sweetened Mrs. Gu Sr.’s heart, and she lowered her head to let the little one in front of her feed her the plum.
Wenxin, being observant, took over the fruit plate while Lin Youning snuggled into Mrs. Gu Sr.’s arms, "Aunt, I will be good from now on, and never fall sick to worry you again."
"Aunt believes in little sister’s words." The frail voice made Mrs. Gu Sr. feel so heartbroken that she wished to hold Lin Youning even tighter.
Lin Youning giggled, her heart warm. It was truly wonderful to live again.
She wouldn’t let Aunt down anymore, wouldn’t make things difficult for her Aunt anymore, and...so many possibilities awaited her. Lin Youning felt she had so much to do now.
Looking around at the scenery, everything seemed more vibrant.
By dinner, Gu Yifeng and Gu Yixuan arrived together. The brothers were five years apart, and with Gu Yifeng spending three years at the border in battle, even though he was only just past his coming-of-age ceremony, he already exuded the calm and wisdom of a man from a prestigious family.
He was already titled Dingyuan Marquis at such a young age, with a noble status and handsome appearance. Naturally, he was elegant and graceful.
In contrast, the just-barely-of-age Gu Yixuan, despite having a flair for romance, lacked in presence significantly.
At such a tender age, pretending to be mature only made him seem a bit childish.
Lin Youning cast only a glance before turning her gaze away. The past was the past. From the moment she was reborn, she would no longer have any entanglement with this man.
"Mother." Gu Yixuan, upon reaching Mrs. Gu Sr., immediately reverted to a childlike demeanor.
Mrs. Gu Sr. raised her hand and gave him a playful shove, "Still behaving like a child and acting spoiled, aren’t you afraid little sister will laugh at you?"
There was no blame, only affection. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
Gu Yixuan scratched his head with a pitiful look at Lin Youning nestled in Mrs. Gu Sr.’s embrace.
This awkwardness made everyone in the room burst into laughter.
Gu Yifeng sat on the upper left seat drinking tea since entering, and the atmosphere in the hall did not affect his expression.
Mrs. Gu Sr. glanced at her eldest son and sighed inwardly. Her eldest son used to be cheerful, but the past misfortune, coupled with three years on the battlefield, had made him silent and distant, even with her, his mother.
Then they heard a servant announce the madam’s arrival. The drapery lifted, and Mrs. Dong entered, not alone, but with a thin figure trailing behind her. Lin Youning paused for a moment; it was Gu Chaoxuan.
Her nephew, who had been one of the victims of the scandal tied to her in her past life.
No, how could he be considered a victim?
In her past life, Gu Chaoxuan had no male heirs, so Gu Chaoxuan, being the only male heir, naturally inherited the title.
Thus, in truth, she was the only one who was harmed.
"Brother Xuan, come to your grandmother. It’s been a while since your aunt was sick, and I didn’t let you come by." As the only grandson of the marquis mansion and born under such circumstances back then, Mrs. Gu Sr. held him dear to her heart.
Gu Chaoxuan was fair-skinned with large, bright eyes, unlike his father Gu Yifeng, who was handsomely featured, whereas Gu Chaozong was more rugged in appearance.
Gu Chaoxuan and Lin Youning were of the same age, with him being three months older than her. Clad in a white gown with black-edged coat, his big eyes, combined with his cherubic face, made him quite endearing.
The little boy respectfully paid his respects to Mrs. Gu Sr. first, calling her ’Grandmother,’ before inquiring towards Lin Youning nestled in her arms, "Aunt, are you feeling better? I recently made a kite; when you’re better, we can fly it together in the garden."
"Your aunt just recovered and can’t withstand that. You can go on your own, but don’t cause mischief with your aunt," Mrs. Gu Sr. warned. "Now that you’ve started school, you must complete your coursework well, and once your aunt is well enough, we’ll have her attend the lessons as well. At that time, you must take good care of your little aunt."
The scene amused everyone in the room.
"I am the aunt, no need for Brother Zong," Lin Youning quickly distanced herself from Gu Chaoxuan.
But after all, she was still young, and her tender voice carried a hint of youthfulness, making her words in a soft, easily misunderstood manner.
"Look at that, our little sister has grown and is an adult now," Gu Yixuan said, interjecting with a teasing tone.
"Don’t you have to be like Second Uncle to be married to be an adult?" Gu Chaoxuan tilted his head and inquired.
"You rascal, daring to tease your second uncle after a few days?" Gu Yixuan said, feigning embarrassment upon hearing about getting married.
It was rare to see this side of Gu Yixuan, prompting another burst of laughter from everyone.
Mrs. Gu Sr., happy, hugged Lin Youning tightly, calling her ’heart and soul’ until the servants announced it was time for dinner, upon which she reluctantly let go of the little one in her arms.
