The Noble Lady's Rebirth: She just wants to Rest in Peace!-Chapter 18: Reactions
In the back courtyard of the Duke Mansion, the servants stood silently to the side, barely daring to breathe. The sound of things shattering was the only noise in the courtyard. Mrs. Gao entered, escorted by the servants.
Mrs. Gao also came from a prestigious family. Her father was a First-Grade Official of the current dynasty, and her grandfather had been a Cabinet Minister. The Gao Family had few descendants, teaching their daughters as they would sons. From a young age, Mrs. Gao followed renowned scholars to continue her studies, gaining fame as a talented woman in her youth.
After marrying into the Duke Mansion, Mrs. Gao was respected by her husband and favored by her mother-in-law, but she fell short in terms of offspring. Over the years, she only bore one son and one daughter. Her son studied at Shushan Academy, twenty miles outside the Capital, and was a classmate of Gu Zixuan. Her daughter, Kong Tianru, was engaged to Gu Yixuan.
As Mrs. Gao entered, a servant lifted the curtain. Mrs. Gao waved her hand at the servant beside her and went inside alone. Her face was stern, clearly showing anger. The pearl earrings, the size of a thumb, dangled erratically beneath her earlobes as she hurried inside.
On the soft couch made of purple sandalwood, the floor was covered with a red carpet, strewn with shattered porcelain pieces. Some calligraphy and paintings lay tossed aside on the floor. Mrs. Gao only slightly frowned before she walked to the couch and sat down. She tugged at her skirt and jacket, speaking calmly, "If you haven’t thrown enough, I’ll have the servants bring more for you to smash. Once you’re done, come out and see me properly."
Even though she was angry, it was directed both at the Dingyuan Marquis Mansion and her own daughter.
But Mrs. Gao suppressed her anger. She had raised her daughter wrong, nurturing the temper of a petty family despite being a noble lady of the Duke Mansion.
The bedroom had been silent since Mrs. Gao’s arrival. After she spoke, it remained quiet for a moment before a figure finally emerged.
The girl wore a gold-trimmed red jacket over a multi-colored skirt with dark patterns and a cloud bun adorned with a ruby hairpin, and a red gemstone hairpin inserted tightly at the side. Her earlobes bore blue agate earrings. From any angle, she appeared radiant, but her beautiful face was colored with incongruent anger.
This is how a young lady should be.
However, the Dingyuan Marquis Mansion was currently mourning, and her daughter appeared before them today in such attire, ultimately falling short in terms of etiquette.
Mrs. Gao sighed inwardly before speaking, "The Dingyuan Marquis Mansion is not breaking off the engagement; they are merely postponing it for a few months. Yet, you embarrassed yourself in front of them, returned to the courtyard huffing and breaking things. If word spreads, won’t it be said that the noble lady of the Duke Mansion is desperate for marriage? The Duke Mansion doesn’t fear losing face, but how will you have the dignity to face people in the future?"
Kong Tianru stood by the couch without moving, her hands tightly twisting the handkerchief in front of her.
"In this life, I’ve borne only you and your brother, yet you do not live up to my expectations. It’s my fault for spoiling you, nurturing such bad habits. If you entered the Dingyuan Marquis Mansion like this, you would only make enemies. It would be better to break off the engagement while there’s still an option. Let’s leave it at that."
"Mother, I understand my mistake." Kong Tianru panicked and admitted her fault upon hearing the possibility of breaking off the engagement.
Seeing her daughter’s anxious expression, Mrs. Gao grew even more frustrated, unsure what was so good about Gu Yixuan that he could captivate her daughter so.
She regretted having interacted too frequently with the Gu Mansion back then; otherwise, Gu Yixuan wouldn’t have caught her daughter’s attention.
"Mother?" Kong Tianru softly called out, seeing her mother remained silent.
Kong Tianru didn’t realize that her cautious demeanor only displeased Mrs. Gao further. A proper noble lady from the Duke Mansion, demeaning herself for a man... Moreover, that Gu Yixuan was already managing two households. Mrs. Gao took a deep breath; at this point, there was no more to say.
"Your actions today were out of line. You can’t let your future mother-in-law harbor any grudges before you even marry. On the eighth of this month, the Dingyuan Marquis Mansion will go to Pure Path Temple. Prepare your belongings, and we will go together as well." Mrs. Gao got up from the couch. "There’s not much time before the eighth; calm down and copy the Diamond Sutra."
"I will remember your teachings, Mother." After seeing her mother out, Kong Tianru began to have the servants clean up.
Unable to sit still, she took her maid into the inner room and whispered, "Find out if the Second Young Master is going to Pure Path Temple on the eighth. If so, get a message to him that I have something urgent to discuss."
Yinchun nodded respectfully, not forgetting to remind her mistress, "Miss, Madam is still angry..."
Kong Tianru impatiently waved her hand. "I’m aware, no need for your reminders. Is it true that Lin Youning is currently staying with Madam?"
Yinchun cautiously nodded.
Kong Tianru hesitated, twisting the handkerchief in her hand. Yinchun tried to comfort her, "She’s just a servant, Second Young Master only has eyes for you. You shouldn’t concern yourself with unimportant people."
Kong Tianru’s face softened slightly and she waved her hand, "Alright, you go quickly."
Yinchun then respectfully retreated.
However, she did not go to the Duke Mansion but directly to the Madam’s main residence.
