Chapter 319: Chapter 319 - Revulsion’s The Thing! To Bring A Kiss To An Ogre, Unseen

The tension between the mature woman and the girl - who was so far past mature she’d circled back into immature - made Qat walk away. She gathered the items they’d found and would need to bring back. Carefully placing the evidence in her pack along with the journal and insignia.

With that taken care of, she began to clean and polish her blade further. She treasured the weapon too much to let it stay unclean. Though as she wiped the black away, she did wonder why she wasn’t *quite* as concerned about what was sullying her mint-drop.

’Is it because I know she is able to deal with it on her own?’

Kefa blew a sigh and pointed at the corpse after looking away from the pleasant smiling brunette.

"Shouldn’t we take him with us? He’s also evidence of the conspiracy."

"Wouldn’t a search party be sent to evaluate the story here? No beast will come to eat it with wounds like that..."

Elua’s ’sweet’ toned response somehow managed to sound both reasonable and entirely dismissive of the woman’s opinion. While part of that was because she needed the dead body to stay where it was so it could ’disappear mysteriously’... the other part was still an annoyance at the *untamed interest*.

’I had calculated that being saved and showing off my Qat’s strength would make it worse, but I ignored how much I would hate this. Even though I trust my darling...’

That trustworthy swordswoman could feel the turmoil in the heiress and spoke up.

"The leader’s death changes our situation."

"How so?"

"The lessers will be affected. They’ll become a bit less coordinated but potentially more erratic and unpredictable as they wander toward finding a new commander."

A honeyed voice spoke while digging her heel into the ground - quite literally. While Kefa was not allowed to see what was really happening, Qatrand could see little micro-stomps making a hole... in the stone.

She wasn’t sure why her wife was really so upset right now. But it was obviously something to do with the other woman.

"What she says is true. There’s a significant risk they’ll wander into the Army’s evacuation path. They can probably handle it, but I won’t risk that."

"I hadn’t considered that. You’re right, warning them takes priority. Though..."

The older Ironclad Order member cast one last glance at the man’s mangled body.

"I still don’t like leaving him... even if he was probably a bastard."

"War doesn’t care what we like. Our duty is to protect the living first. Everything else is secondary."

The twin-blade wielder nodded reluctantly at the Yecine’s words of wisdom. Elua calmed for a few moments, simply enjoying the low voice that had spoken such words. Until Qatrand shouldered the pack, wincing slightly as the movement pulled at her wounded shoulder.

"Your shoulder... is it alright?"

The gash had stopped bleeding, but the skin around it remained inflamed with a faint trace of blackness at the edges. When the woman moved to get a closer look, a small cultivator was suddenly between them. Her voice lost its sweetness, leveling the same sort of detached tone she’d spoken to the ’healers’ at the competition grounds.

"I’ll see to it when we return. I have experience with injuries."

While the woman was wondering when she had moved, Qatrand raised her uninjured arm and slapped her palm down onto the girl’s head softly to try and defuse the tension. That physical action alone was almost as effective as the tendrils of spirit wrapping her tight.

"We should move now. The most direct path back to the evacuation route would be through the eastern ridge. But we don’t know if there will be any enemies there, so-"

"I can scout ahead to ensure your path is clear."

"You?"

Elua smirked back at the woman who seemed a bit incredulous. Not because she was particularly happy to reveal her method, but because her husband-wife had just spiked with annoyance at her tone and question.

’Self destruct more, hag!’

A chorus of chirps sounded out as a trio of birds flew in from three different directions. They had been waiting in a triangle formation around the area, with instructions to warn her if a large group of Voidlings approached. Much of her focus was on locking down the spiritual presence of the Hivemind from reaching out.

"That’s... convenient."

Kefa commented while the brunette reached up and shifted the hand on her head. The schemer aligned it with the handprint on her face to make it perfectly clear as two of her Skydancers landed on each shoulder. And, of course, her primary companion perched on her husband-wife’s head.

"So, let’s go wherever you want, my love?"

’Mischief’ and ’joy’ spiked as she felt the equivalent of a *spiritual gag* out of the twin-blade user. Qat may not have been paying much attention to the person from her Guild to notice anything like that, but she still did realize what was happening now. A small hand signal made the brunette nod and a Vacuum Layer block sound.

"How bad is it?"

"My mother would have desired to wring her neck by now~"

Having spent time talking to the Dame Goltbred about her duels, Qatrand frowned. She had been told by Yatrel that it was only those who were sexually attracted and seriously considered doing something about it that she ever called out. A strange feeling started to swirl inside of her.

"Do I need to do anything to dissuade her?"

"Truthfully I really want you to kiss me right now and have her back off from that, but I’m not sure it would work, and-"

The bird standing on raven black hair hopped onto the pack as the tall girl leaned down and locked her lips with the heiress. Quickly that feeling that had built inside began to disperse, but it allowed her to better understand what it had been.

’Revulsion’ at the idea of someone other than her El thinking of her in that sort of way had filled the swordswoman. Deepening the kiss made the birds take flight and mint eyes dull. The more unstable she made the ancient cultivator, the more ’made right’ she felt.

When Qatrand pulled away with a hot exhale, the Goltbred curled into a ball on the ground and gripped the surface. Vicious cracks ran toward the quarry away from their group and for a moment the tall girl was worried she had just made her wife reveal too much.

However, Kefa seemed to be staring off into space - a lot like a certain personal servant used to do at times, when placed in a ’daydream’.

"Qat, that’s no good. You can’t just do that to me without warning. First you don’t let me finish what I was saying, then-"

"Sorry..."

Calloused fingers pinched on the ridge of her own nose as she apologized and interrupted the monotone voice. An intense burst of ’amusement’ rocked the clearing, the little Ogre’s ability to properly modulate her intent still not back to normal after getting such a lucky treat.

"Ah, this reminds me of the first time you kissed me. You know you are so impulsive at times."

"Again... sorry."

"As much as I hate that she feels that way, she’s much more likely to sing your praises when we get back if you don’t make too much of a point of seeming like you know what she wants from you."

It wasn’t something the more straightforward Yecine liked hearing, even if she trusted the schemer. After a few slow breaths, she kneeled down and rubbed the reborn spiritualist’s back softly.

"If that’s so, then why were you... antagonizing her?"

"Well, that’s easy. Thieving cats often feel even more compelled to steal when they know the one they are robbing doesn’t want them to."

’Cats are horrible contrarians by nature.’

When nothing was said after that, a pair of hands moved under the girl’s armpits and lifted up. Elua didn’t fight it, even knowing what was probably about to be revealed. Her whole body still felt hot, but especially-

"Your face is... really red still."

"W-whose fault is that?!"

An unmodulated facade screamed out, an octave higher than usual once again.

Twice the Skydancers spotted signs of Voidling activity in the distance. Qat observed some distant movement as they paused briefly on a ridge overlooking a valley that would lead to the main path the evacuation was taking.

"Just as unpredictable as expected."

Kefa nodded as she stood *too close*. After their talk and departure from the messy scene, Qatrand had felt extra sensitive to the woman’s distance. Even if the seventeen year old was sure that nothing would just happen out of nowhere...

"I’ve only seen this happen late in previous Descents as we start hunting down stragglers. Never this early."

"We have my husband to thank. Less than a day and the burden on our region has lessened. I hope everyone will be thankful."

The clear edge of ’possession’ made the woman’s eye twitch. She knew that this was the Bloody Duelist’s daughter, but throughout the trip so far there had been lots of *clinging* and shooting of glares.

’What has happened to my life that I’m starting to want to compete with someone whose mother is my age?’

A rustling in the underbrush ahead brought them both to alert posture. Three Voidlings burst from the foliage, already charging as they caught sight of the cultivators. Qat quickly drew her blade and rushed to meet them.

"Stay behind me."

As the heavy blade swept the trouble away in one swipe more swiftly than Kefa’s shorter blades would have done in twelve... her gaze on the young lad narrowed. The memory of seeing the young heir slay the leader was still fresh. Still impressive.

’Maybe I’m not the problem? It’s just the young men these days are too virile and chivalrous.’

Kefa even started to think it might be best that this particular Yecine’s popularity rose further, quicker. Then... when the attention became overwhelming and stressful, she could be a very comforting elder sister figure. Very. Comforting.

"I should have arranged it so that Ryder joined us instead. So what if his Astralism would have made knocking him out with the interference less believable?"

The brunette shook her head in disappointment at her caution. Now her Qat had a troublesome admirer... one that was not nearly as cute and simple minded as Talva er Ryleon had been for her.
