Chapter 331: 330 can reduce some burden

President Bao and Huo Jing, fully armed, arrived in D City.

They sat in the car, watching the few wandering zombies outside the transmission point.

"What should we do?"

President Bao adjusted the helmet he had welded out of iron and looked helplessly at Huo Jing, who was also wearing an iron-welded helmet.

They had brought a large truck through the transmission, and the truck bed was filled with rolls of barbed wire.

Gritting his teeth, Huo Jing’s voice was muffled inside the helmet, but the gritting could still be heard,

"Charge through!"

After saying this, he floored the accelerator and charged toward the incoming zombies.

This was a good idea, and at least Huo Jing and the Contractor made it safely to the temporary safety zone.

Along the way, they crushed quite a few zombies...

After a day, the area outside the temporary safety zone had gathered many survivors.

Most were rescued back by the Garrison.

There were also a few who had run out of the zombie crisis in D City by themselves.

These were extremely lucky, and as soon as they reached outside the safety zone, they burst into loud, uncontrollable sobs.

Ni Shuiwen also survived, covered in blood.

He and a few men sat blankly in the snow.

As the Garrison intervened more, more zombies were killed and more survivors gathered.

The situation was gradually getting under control.

People continuously tried to enter the safety zone, hoping to return to Xiang City, but were driven back by Hua Mi, Shi Caixia, Da Fu, and Xiao Fu.

Seeing that the Contractor and Huo Jing were dragging an electric fence from the truck and preparing to set up the barbed wire,

someone sarcastically said,

"The Garrison has not said anything, what right does a pregnant woman have to stop us from returning to Xiang City?"

"Could it be she wants to hog our supplies?"

"Is this looting during a disaster, or what? She’s putting us in danger, what is she trying to do?"

Amidst the complaints, Hua Mi looked out at the survivors sprawled or seated before her.

Someone approached Ni Shuiwen under the moonlight,

"Commander, aren’t you going to say something?"

Ni Shuiwen steadied himself and stood up, representing all the survivors to negotiate with Hua Mi,

"It’s been so long, you can’t keep our supplies forever and not let us return to Xiang City. We will really die here."

Hua Mi looked at Ni Shuiwen, who was showing a face full of anger, and asked,

"Where is your wife, Guo Se?"

The man across from her froze, having survived such close calls, he hadn’t thought about Guo Se until now.

Then, Ni Shuiwen furrowed his brow and said to Hua Mi,

"What we’re discussing now is a different matter. You have guarded us for so long, and now we want to take back our own supplies, is that possible?"

He knew Hua Mi was formidable, and now they were both tired and cold and had no money; no one was willing to confront Hua Mi directly.

It was strange, this pregnant woman with such a big belly, how had she managed to stand against them all day?

Hua Mi continued to ask,

"Your wife might still be alive, aren’t you going to save her?"

Ni Shuiwen, his face a picture of enraged embarrassment, growled lowly,

"What I’m talking to you about now is our supplies, don’t beat around the bush."

"Is this beating around the bush?"

Hua Mi scoffed coldly,

"You’re the one who organized the group, you’re the one who triggered the Zombies, your wife is in a desperate situation, and you don’t even know whether she’s dead or alive, yet you’re still thinking about leaving D City quickly."

"The right thing to do wouldn’t have been to regroup your people after stabilizing and kill as many Zombies as you could?"

Under the moonlight, Ni Shuiwen stared at Hua Mi with an unhappy expression,

"Shut up, how I handle things is none of your business."

"Are you even a woman? You have no idea what we’ve been through. What right do you have to stand here and dictate what we should or shouldn’t do?"

She hadn’t experienced anything at all.

She just knew how to stand there and make snide remarks.

Hua Mi turned around on the spot and ignored Ni Shuiwen.

After a while, Zhou Cheng returned with a team from the Garrison and told Hua Mi and Shi Caixia to rest,

"The Garrison has taken over here. You guys rest up. Commander Gong is still killing Zombies in D City. It should stabilize soon."

Hua Mi nodded and glanced at Ni Shuiwen.

The Garrison stabilizing the situation meant that the survivors who could be saved had almost all been rescued.

So with no contact from Guo Se yet, the prospects looked grim.

Ni Shuiwen showed no reaction; he just saw the Garrison taking over the temporary safety zone and felt overwhelmed.

This meant that they had to wait outside; they couldn’t retrieve their supplies until 48 hours had passed.

His problems were significant now because this group was organized by him, and on their first outing, they had stirred up a hornet’s nest.

The death toll couldn’t even be calculated, only the survivors who managed to stay outside the safety zone.

The number was less than a third of the original.

It was clear how many had died.

Those survivors who were alive weren’t pursuing the matter only because there wasn’t time. Once they retrieved their supplies, they would undoubtedly hold someone accountable.

Ni Shuiwen would be the first to bear the brunt since he organized the group.

Ni Shuiwen was desperate to get his supplies back to leave D City as soon as possible.

After all, in his and Guo Se’s car, were the Zombie Crystal Cores they had collected during this period.

He certainly wanted to retrieve those cores.

For a man who had suffered such a big hit, how Guo Se was doing was the least of Ni Shuiwen’s concerns...

But the Garrison’s thinking was the same as Hua Mi’s.

The pressure was already great in the isolation observation areas around each transmission point.

This batch of survivors deeply mired in the Zombie crisis of D City couldn’t be let go, to continue increasing the pressure on the medical staff in the observation areas.

Fully armed, Huo Jing and the Contractor, like two diligent bees, started setting up barbed wire.

They were busy all night.

By the next morning, some people outside the safety zone began convulsing.

The crowd was in an uproar, with someone pointing at the Garrison guarding the entrance to the safety zone and shouting loudly,

"What are you doing? Don’t you know there’s someone convulsing here? Why won’t you let us in?"

Ni Shuiwen, hidden in the crowd, had a gloomy face, instigating,

"Yeah, could it be that the Garrison wants to swallow up our supplies?"

"Why is it when the Garrison blows up Zombies nothing happens? But when we blow them up, our losses are so severe? Is the Garrison trying to kill us on purpose?"

There were quite a few who believed in this conspiracy theory.

Someone asked:

"Why would the Garrison do that?"

Without needing Ni Shuiwen to intentionally guide them, some people thought very deeply and speculated wildly,

"With so many survivors and not enough supplies, Xiang City Base would certainly not want to support so many people."

"Being able to reduce the burden by letting some die, alleviating the shortage of supplies, yet still making it look like Zombies did it, no one would blame the Garrison."
