Chapter 67: Surviving the Kraken

Esme stared at the colossal tentacle that was mere seconds away from crushing the ship to pieces.

If it managed to do that, then most people on board would either drown or be crushed by the tentacle underwater.

Moving on impulse, she pointed her fingers at the tentacle and closed her eyes for a brief second.

A bluish translucent dome of energy immediately appeared, encasing the entire ship.

But she knew that even with her barrier, the ship was doomed.

"Daphne! It’s not going to hold!" She screamed as she kept her eyes on the barrier. "My barrier is like a one-way mirror!"

Daphne’s eyes widened slightly, and she understood without Esme having to explain further.

"Aofie! Let’s hit us all at once!" She screamed to Aofie as she began to summon the shadows surrounding them.

The troublesome Ork nodded and stepped forward, yellow currents dancing in both her palms.

One unique thing about Esme’s barrier was that it could protect them from damage, but at the same time, they could attack from within the barrier, the attacks gaining a small added buff.

The shadows around Daphne twisted around each other to become even larger, and then they ascended into the sky, charging towards the tentacle.

At the same time, Aofie sent a bolt of explosive lightning hurtling toward the tentacle as well.

They passed through the barrier, their potency slightly buffed, and then—

Boom!

The tentacle slammed into the shadow, first, ripping the top part of it to shreds and then the lightning crashed into it, going through its entire length.

But all they managed to do was slow it down...

Crash!

The tentacle slammed into Esme’s barrier, the spiked and suckers tightening around its translucent body.

An intense headache overwhelmed her immediately her barrier was hit. Esme swayed, almost losing her balance, and the shield flickered before Freya held her up.

"Hang in there Esme!"

The petite girl nodded, gritting her teeth as she focused on the barrier. Blood was slowly dripping from her nose, but she wiped it with her left hand.

The tentacle would have overpowered her shield by now, but Daphne’s shadows were doing their best to keep it at bay.

Every few seconds, Aofie would also send a surge of lightning that helped to stall the tentacle, but it was not enough.

Esme could feel it, any moment from now, her barrier would crumble, and she would be in no state to create another one.

Daphne seemed to have noticed this as well. She turned to Freya, "Freya, can you split the ship?!"

It was a big ask for someone who was still only learning to use her abilities.

Not only would she have to split the ship at the point of impact, she would also have to reassemble it without losing any passengers in the process.

Esme knew firsthand how much time and effort it took just for her to pull off what she did in the arena.

The nights she would stay awake practicing, the unnoticed manipulation of the chairs days before that to test herself out...

But this was different. To do something like this out of the blue was madness.

And yet with firm determination, Freya nodded and stared at the edge of the ship.

**

’Split the ship, bring it back, split the ship, bring it back,’ Freya sang in her head.

She looked up at the area the tentacle would slam into and closed her eyes to focus.

But focusing was difficult, it was hard to concentrate when more than fifty people were screaming in fear.

Thankfully, Daphne intervened. "Do you want to die?! Be quiet for fucks sake!" She screamed at them, and they brought down their screams to soft sobs.

The water was thrashing violently, and the blue glow was still surrounding them, but they all had to focus on one thing first...

And that was the tentacle.

’All I have to do is split the deck by the seams, seal it to prevent it from sinking and then reconstruct it just the way it was.’

Freya took a deep breath.

Aofie cursed from beside her. "Not to be that guy, but Esme isn’t looking too good. You have to do it now."

The barrier above them shattered like glass, and the shadows were crumpled like paper as the tentacle began its descent.

"Here goes!"

CREAKK!

Freya moved her hands in the air like a conductor would in an orchestra. The ship creaked, wood pulling out of place and nails slipping out of holes— and then the entire thing parted in two ways.

The wooden planks at the now exposed edges suddenly flipped, forming a temporary covering to prevent the ship from sinking.

And then the tentacle crashed into the sea.

Water splashed high into the air, bathing Freya as well as multiple other people. It was like being passed through a waterfall.

The force of the impact was so great that their ship was tossed backward, moving way too far from the other half.

Freya bit her lip, drawing blood. They had managed to escape the attack, but if they could not bring both parts together, they would sink!

Luckily for them, immediately after the tentacle came crashing down, Daphne had created a long shadow string to connect both ships.

And now that string was pulling the other part of the ship toward them.

"Are you ready Freya?" Daphne asked as the ship came closer and closer to crashing into them.

Freya nodded. "Yes!"

As both ships were moments away from colliding, the wood of the hull rotated in place, returning back to its normal position.

Both parts fit like a glove, and then they began to rearrange themselves until the ship once again became whole.

Only then did Freya allow herself to relax, she fell down to the floor beside Esme, taking in deep breaths.

They had somehow avoided a disaster. But there was one thing on all their minds.

’Are we really this weak?’

Wise had taken on the kraken head on and yet they almost died from battling a single tentacle.

Freya felt disgusted by her insufficiencies.

"Maybe my ability is truly useless." She said, staring at her palms.

’If I had inherited the family ability, would things have been different...?’

Dark memories flashed through Freya’s mind as she remembered things she would rather have kept locked in the back of her mind.

But the princesses did not get to wallow for long, because they finally realized what the blue glow was meant for.
