Chapter 418: The Onslaught- I

<Estelle pov>

To wake up with the crown on her head and with the responsibilities of a queen to her country was a dream she always dreamt of. It was a feeling Estelle had longed for since the time she had been introduced to all the subjects. She needed to learn to become the Queen of her country.

It has been the time when her mother had passed the notion to her ministers that she was going to be the crown princess who was going to become the Queen of the country. There was no more waiting for a male heir.

Even when every man in attendance did try to hide their pleasure and some of them, even going as far as to voice it, she had looked at me, standing beside her, with pride as she announced me as her legacy.

The pride in her mother’s eyes was the only thing that had kept Estelle going forward even after her death in her quest to become the queen; it had only hardened further, when she realized who in place of her was going to become the figurehead of the country. Neither Augustus, nor her father deserved that.

If they had been a fool of deserving, as she was, she would have moved out of the way, but they did not deserve it at all. They were going to ruin her country more than what it was already ruined.

She had again woken up before it was time for her lady-in-waiting to come and wake her up. Somehow, these days, her instincts were picking up a few things that she could not place her finger on.

Estelle removed the covers from her and moved to the balcony that overlooked everything from the Queens quarters. It had been unoccupied since her mothers untimely demise.

She relished the feeling of the cold. It somehow made her stronger. The lack of guards in the palace did not escape her. It did not feel safe to stay in this place, but she had nowhere else to go especially when she did not have the amount of soldiers she needed to travel somewhere at the moment.

Interception. That was what had happened between the letters she and her sister had exchanged. Someone had intercepted them, changed the contents entirely and made her take such a foolish decision that cost her so much of efforts.

The treasury was almost empty. Yet she had chosen to send her army up with resources more than necessary.. something she could not afford.

They were coming back, but they were taking time. It was cold, the snow was not exactly welcoming to soldiers that had never seen it. Melenmore was a warm country and winter was not much experienced in the region.

Then came the talk of the blood sucking creatures that her sister Genevieve had become friendly with. She was yet to see whether or not they were truly someone to be an ally of or not. But the fact that Genevieve was already establishing relations with them meant something. They had to be... she did not want to think of the word ’friendly’, but they were more ally-like.

She had heard of the strength vampire’s possessed, and if word was true, also given the fact that they had an entire kingdom conquered, they might be a very formidable ally to align with. Even a country like Lethoris would be pale in comparison to them and that was the strongest kingdom because of the army and the barbaric tactics they had in war.

Given Genevieve’s close relation to them, it would not be hard to establish a good relationship with them.

She sighed.

Her sisters, how long had it been since she had last seen them? Genevive was far away, in the midst of creatures that could snap her neck any moment, and she did not even know where Catherine was.

In the middle of the takeover that she had planned, Catherine was the weakest link she had. Her youngest sister had to be sent away for her own protection and until she had stabilized to the kingdom with a few ministers she could trust, Catherine was to stay away in one of the villages with her lady-in-waiting.

Estelle placed a hand over her heart. It was beating at quite a rapid pace. The abominable feeling of something happening that was not going to be in favour Such grew to such an extent that she could not even breathe properly. Something bad was going to happen.

But what?

With her army gone, she was at the weakest point and the easiest to assassinate but She had tried to put everything in place that would not let anyone know about the army decision. Then who..

she gripped over the railing. She had the trust of the army and the leftover soldiers that stayed behind. Who could betray her? No one had—

The hair on the back of her neck. The feeling of being watched and her body and soul. Someone was near her that she was not aware of, and they were watching her. Someone who had not announced their presence.

Estelle turned around abruptly, her eyes going over everything one by one. "Who is it?"

A man jumped in front of her, from the ceiling, where she glanced out before looking back at the man, and realizing how, at the moment, she was lacking any self-defence gear, and was at his mercy.

"Whatever you are thinking about, don’t you dare—"

"Queen Estelle Cynthia Elizabeth of house Harton," The man drawled lazy like he had all the time in the world to continue this, "the recently self disappointed Queen because of a.. food poisoning that killed everyone in a dinner, only you were not part of."

Her cheeks burned with the insinuation words of the man carried. "You have committed a grave crime coming to my room. What is it that you possibly think you can get?" She had to choose her words carefully.

The man smiled, a cold and calculated smile that could rival her own. "An agreement that is going to benefit both of us."
